EDIT: The final art!

CONTEXT: Behold! A young Astarion studying to become a Magistrate. We're talking early adulthood and several years yet from ever being captured by Cazador. I can't pick his hair shade because every choice feels blasphemous (though I'm leaning blond, personally), so I leave it up to you people.

I tend to think of him as a sun elf for the tragic irony, hence the gold eyes. I also like to think that there are instances where long-term neglect CAN alter a vampire's appearance, which would explain his later hair-color change, so don't stress too much over that.

Don’t know why but the brown hair is speaking to me. Kinda like how you said after about 200 years of not being cared for I would think his hair would have gone white or that maybe him becoming a vampire made it turn white. Or maybe it’s something Cazador did to change his appearance so others wouldn’t recognize him. But yeah I don’t know but the brown hair is just more natural for me

in my heart of hearts i feel his hair was brown before he turned. he kinda always puts on a mask to make himself look higher status than he really is and it makes sense that he would’ve been miffed that he didn’t have those ✨royal golden locks✨ rather than actually looking like he came from royal lineage (since recessive genes tend to be more common in royal family’s bc…incest)

I personally suspect his hair was dark. Brown or black. In game, his eyelashes and eyebrows are dark. Now, that could be due to makeup (though if it was, I think he'd get rid of those shadows under his eyes too, and he doesn't), but let's say it's natural. Lots of the vamps in the game have white streaks on their hair, presumably due to stress. Heck, one of the vamp kids had a white streak; apparently the change itself was stress enough to induce graying. I imagine he had dark hair, and stress grayed it all, but left his brows and lashes dark.

While I think blonde looks beautiful on him, the white silvery hair is just so much more him. I know hair changes a lot during life (i was a blonde once... as a small bebe) and while I think the idea that his story and his trauma changed his hair would fit him, I still I want to desperately believe that this part of him has not changed and that he has kept a piece of his younger beautiful self. In my mind that is why his hair and his looks are so important to him

First off - THANK you for allowing us to help aid in your decision! Hmmm, I tend to lean towards Moon Elf for Astarion due to his close relationship and acceptance of human beings (they tend to be more affable with humans than sun elves). They also take up the adventuring lifestyle more. He has an Evereska line regarding "moonstones" in game as well, so he could be either. I view him with green or blue eyes. I prefer his while/silver hair in panel 1. If you choose blonde, I would definitely keep it on the lighter (beige or dirty) blonde side and less yellow. Either way, silver and blonde work great. I don't envision him as a brunette.

I am team white haired moon elf pre vampirism- BUT going off of your theory / drawings I am liking the blonde a lot- the warmth is giving the "dashing magistrate" vibe he would have been harnessing probably- I think I would like the brown more overall if it were darker though. I think a bit more contrast to his features would be lovely- dark hair and gold eyes are so yum- but also I get if ur going for Sun ☀️ you'd want to keep him in those mid tone browns too So for your vision I say blonde 🙏🏻👱🏻

Ohhhh that's a really good observation about the eyelashes, and I agree that I think it's natural, too. This may have settled it for me honestly 🤔 And yup, I second in thinking that his hair grayed out from stress, and that that is not a rare phenomenon among spawn. Both aesthetically and the fact that in-game he only mentions growing fangs and his eyes turning red, I never assumed his hair color was anything other than white/silver. On the other hand he straight up denies having wrinkles (which, sir, they are part of why you’re so damn pretty and irresistible), so who knows? If your hc is that it was different, though…I’ve heard blondes have more fun

Sure, but elves are known for their pretty hair and white is so pretty! I know he has gotten stress lines and such from his "work" but for example moon elves (ye yes he is a high elf technically but moon elves are SO common and he has many features of them) can have pretty white hair

Oh that's interesting! I'm not sure I've gotten those lines. I think I'm set in my ways because I decided that Dalyria was a moon elf, and they had a kind of tenuous friendship based on contrasts - so it's a thematic choice for me rather than anything else. Regardless it could definitely go either way

Maximum tragedy would be brown so when it starts turning white it’s more obvious(and he would have to possibly hide it more because it would be strange for such a young elf). But the blond is so good.

Upon finding out that Tav is the DU he advises a resisting Durge to at least "try" to resist Bhaal and that he (Astarion) "wouldn't live another century as one (mind addled slave) for all the moonstones in Evereska." It's a touching encounter. Like you said, however, the game doesn't offer many clues as to whether Astarion was sun or moon.

Still the silver I think. Maybe the gold. But he only really mentions the eyes and fangs, and even without a mirror he would've been able to see bits of his hair, so I think he would have mentioned it. Also several of his siblings are also fair haired so Cazador has a "type".

I do believe it was actually confirmed that he is a moon elf by the devs, so it’s absolutely possible for him to have white hair. I think that’s why his quest is called the pale elf, not because he is obviously pale but because in dnd the other snobby high elves call the moon elves pale elves as an insult

I'm leaning more towards the silver. The blond hair gives him more of an Alucard than a Astarion vibe. The chestnut hair is the hair colour a lot of the people I've seen drawing huma-- non-vampiric Astarion tend to choose. But something about how he's never changed, not even his hair colour has an allure that is hard to pass up. Almost unchanged down to the finest details and yet he can't remember what he looks like.

My hc, as many others have mentioned, is that he's a moon elf, and has always had silver hair. The blonde hair looks interesting, and I could see the possibility that while his hair didn't exactly change color, the tone of it got colder, somehow, when he turned. So maybe from a warmer, practically ivory-blonde to the cooler silver-white that we know and love.

I always thought his hair was probably black. I’m Latina, our hair tends to go very silver and white instead of an ashy grey like blondes often do. So I assumed he had dark hair but eyes, I love the idea of gold. That would be so striking.
