Hanan

CC

Oh you guys made me cry :( but yes, this show is really good!

So… for historical context… 60s in South Korea: The story is set less than a decade after the end of the Korean War and the whole decade was marked by political instability due to democracy issues, revolution and even a military coup

CC

Oh, almost forgot, since you guys had questions about the historical context, I’m no expert, but here’s what I know: Straight after the end of world war 2, the Korean War happened. In 1953, it “ended” in a stalemate and the country was split into North and South. Jeju is obviously in the south. But even though they were the half that was influenced by capitalism and the United States, they were in a dictatorship all the way until the late 1980s, when South Korean citizens gained direct election rights. So this is set in the 1960s, when the active fighting is over but people are still in a dictatorship and very poorly off economically and corruption was very common, as you saw with the teacher. I’m sure you heard the mum say the average life expectancy is 52… South Korea only became a “developed” country very recently, like in the last decades. Also, people were wary of spies. Remember, it’s the middle of the Cold War right now. Maybe others can add on with more knowledge, this is just a brief summary to help you understand!

Im so excited for this!!! I love this show so much!! I think i have already watched it 5 times lol

theeternal_pessimist

This first episode alone brought me so much tears and memories, I was the eldest daughter of a poor Asian family and ever since I was young, there was that burdened of aspiring to be successful to help out. My mom would always dream of wonderful things and she had always believed I will be the one to fulfill it, she passed way to early for me to give her a better life. Apologies for the cringe note but I think this drama resonated to me because I relate to it so much, and when Wesley got emotional, I did too, again. I love you guys, and your reaction as always.

Narawin971

Gwansik is such a good character. He's literally the GOAT

Alie's Cornerstore

oh mannnn you guys are going to cry every episode 😭 I can attest I UGLY cried nearly every ep

Helen l

Love your reactions. This episode was so good.

Jin Noodles

They warned you about this making you cry but there are also scenes that'll make you smile, laugh and feel good. Thats why this series is taking off.

Rinakin

Also the actor Park Bogum who plays the main male character is one of Taehyungs best friends! He is not necessarily a part of his wooga squad actor friends, but he has been one of Vs closest friends for almost ten years now!! And since V is also close with IU, this a drama of his besties 💜

Diana Casillas

Awww even though this kdrama is gonna make you cry so much i know you will totally love it ! It is indeed a whoooole journey !

Yves Silver

Damn I feel bad saying yes to the show if there crying already this much on chiller side of the show.

Yves Silver

Having to wait weekly is going to be rough. I want more so bad.

i’m so glad you guys are finally reacting to iu’s acting since you’ve been interested since suchwita. she’s one of the best actor/singer and genuinely a good hardworking person. same with park bogum (the lead actor of this show) i think they have a similar history to bts in the sense of how hard they had to work to be such a big figures in their perspective careers. very good genuine people. also park bogum is one of tae’s closet friend for over a decade, he’s an army and he would go to bts’s concert with tae’s parent. also the way i bawled my eyes out even tho i already watch it😭😭

물아일체 이슬한잔

This show is kind of like Korean version of Forrest Gump, beside main drama there's little bits of modern history of Korea(60s~present). You don't have to know Korean history to enjoy this show but it's something extra.

물아일체 이슬한잔

I watched few reaction of Tangerines and found out most of them don't get some cultural stuff of the show which I think is more important then historic context. So I'd like to tell you about it without spoilers. English is not my first language but I'll try my best. One thing I want to tell you guys is what's the deal with Gwan-sik's grandma(Yong-rim). Without context she's just seems like mean old lady being cruel to Ae-sun. However she's actually a village shaman who performs blessing or warding rite for the village. In the scene where Ae-Sun burns her mother's diving suit, Yong-rim sprays red beans and whips Hye-ran(Ae-sun's mom) with colored cloth which are common rite to ward off evil spirits. And on the market scene Yong-rim also say she can "see" Hye-ran's ghost still lingers around her daughter watching over her refusing to pass to afterlife. In Korean shamanism Ghost lingering around you is really bad omen, even if ghost's intention is good. That's why Yong-rim is trying to keep Ae-sun away from her grandson.

shayna

Gwang-sik is the greenest flag I've ever seen in a kdrama.

Taro

Wesley tearing less than 20 minutes into the first episode is so relatable. 🥹 Also, the pacing in this series with its time skips and storytelling is phenomenal, so you don't have to worry. Unless you two wanted to get a tear duct infection, it's good that it's only one episode per week. 😂

Vishwa Joshi

It's like the asian eldest daughter story through different generations!

zaltaas

I’m so glad I get to see your reactions to this 🥹❤️‍🩹

these are some of the context that i’ve gathered that might help you guys along the way 1950s–60s South Korea: A period of severe economic hardship, especially after the Korean War. Jeju Island: More isolated and conservative. communities were often closed-minded and reliant on superstitions. Discrimination and hardships for women: Women in Jeju faced limited opportunities, discrimination, and had to take on physically demanding roles. Haenyeo: Female divers unique to Jeju Island who harvested marine products without oxygen tanks to support their families. they have a strong solidarity and are like family so they have to protect each other’s lives. Limited access to education: Many women couldn’t pursue education and instead worked in factories to support their families. ⭐️ the mom died early because diving causes lung disease and at the time they had no treatment for it. she was smoking as well other than the fact that her job was dangerous ⭐️ the actors are using jeju dialect but like you guys were saying korean has had a rapid transformation since the 1950s so there’s a large different between generations on values and perspective, etc.

spoopyjhope

This is my first time watching this kdrama and OMG I'm hooked. Gonna watch episode 2 rn. I'll definitely miss your guy's commentary but I'm not patient enough to wake until next week 😭

Kashalia

GUYS YOU MISSED LIKE THE LAST 15 MINS OF THE EPISODE!! The credits some up first, but it's just for awhile, then there's some more leading up to the next episode. Don't miss it!!
