This show was made for you tbh. Lots of intrigues for you to theorize, a unique main character, a beautiful historical setting... Try to keep in mind the things that happen in each episodes, because some things are more important than it seems for the story.

The story is set in a loose version of Imperial china and the only men allowed near the harem would be eunuchs so the couldn't have a child that could take the throne

Glad you like the show, isn't Maomao just so interesting? She makes the already good show so much better. Fun little tidbit: the voice actress for Maomao is the incredibly talented Aoi Yuuki...who also plays the sin archbishop of Lust in Re:Zero, among other roles. One of my favorite VA's for sure.

By the way, the reason the minister tasted the poison after Maomao was because Maomao looked so beautiful and looked as if she ws enjoying it soooo much that everyone was like.... "is it REALLY poison if she is liking it that much?" It was explained in novel

It always amazed me how well animated episode 4 is. Even Wesley pointed it out. Apparently they had a guest director just for that episode. The animation even in seemingly inconsequencial movements were so smooth. I hate how lots of people bashed the episode saying it had the worst animation just because the artstyle became simpler for the sake of smoother movement :/

So happy to see you two reacting to this from what I understand depending on how it's written Maomao can mean cat-cat in Japanese there was a Chinese general who's name mao was accidentally recorded as cat so there is a running joke in different bits of media of a general cat normally referred to as neko shogun

I’m Chinese, and Imperial Court shows are one of the biggest genres on Chinese television, so it was pretty exciting to see an anime about Chinese imperial court. Some fun facts about characters' names: Maomao: "Mao (猫)" literally means "cat", which you might already guessed. Jinshi: "壬氏" isn't a "real" name. "Shi (氏)" means "family name", so "Jinshi" means "a person with Jin as his last name" or "a woman who's married to the Jin family". "Shi" was often used as a place-holder for people who have their names removed for whatever reason, usually married women. There are also some character names based on famous Chinese historical figures: "Gao Shun" was a famous military general during the Three Kingdom era. Considering Gaoshun's physique this might be an intentional reference. "Li Haku" was one of the most well known poet of Chinese history. Also: "Xiao" (小) in Chinese means "Little", often used in nicknames. That's why baby Ling Li is sometimes called "Xiao Ling".

The point about 11 minutes in about how being a virile eunuch is an evolutionary viable strategy to having your kids be next in line reminds me of a certain "rock-paper-scissors" relationship between different coloured lizards. Essentially, there were three coloured lizards (blue, orange , and yellow) vying for territory and breeding rights. The blue ones would have one female they mate with and a small territory, but the orange ones would have multiple females and a large territory, easily outcompeting the blue ones. However, the yellow coloured lizards would pretend to be female, infiltrating the orange territory like eunuchs in a harem. When there are a lot of blue lizards, the orange ones would outcompete them because they bred faster and had access to more resources. When there are a lot of orange lizards, the yellow ones would outcompete them by making it so the majority of their children actually turned out yellow. When there are a lot of yellow lizards, the blue lizards would breed faster because it's harder to trick them due to their monogamy and small territory size. This would cycle on and on and on (barring mutations, bottlenecks, ect) for thousands of years

Hmm, not exactly accurate. English and Japanese are both the original language. Don't forget thatt the anime was directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, a Japanese director, and animated by studio TRIGGER, a Japanese company. CD Projekt Red was of course heavily involved but is was not the sole production company. Even Wikipedia lists Japanese as the original language. (Not necessarily objecting to the recommendation though, because the acting in either language was good.)

Yorutia is correct, the original language is technically Japanese. I believe even Netflix labels it so when you select subtitle languages. I watched it the first time in Japanese and it was a great experience. I rewatched it in the english dub and it's also great. Both dubs are great but I do understand why you'd get so many people recommending it in English dub because the setting is in an American city - or at least used to be in the lore, and the in-universe slang/terms are of course spoken as they are in in the English dub just like in the game whereas with the sub, you'd only be reading it in the subtitles.

As someone who prefers subs & originally watched Cyberpunk Subbed… I think English dubbed would be better too. Both are good, but gosh dang there’s so much reading in certain moments with the sub that it can be difficult to not feel a bit overwhelmed, you know?

Something to consider regarding the entertainment district is that it wasn't only brothels. It also offered higher forms of entertainment such as reading of poem's, discussion of philosphy, playing board games, dance, etc. High ranked courtesans would usually only be involved with these higher forms of entertainment. The courtesans had a contract with a house and when they got bought, the client was basically taking over the contract. They could be bought for various reasons, for example being talented at something.

I had to look this up but there’s a bunch of meanings to those hairpins. When Jinshi gave Maomao a hairpin it was him staking claim of her, when Lihua gave her one it was recognition of a great service and when Lihaku gave her one it was a promise later down the road she can make a request of leave of absence using him as a proxy to the court.
