Gabby

You will grow to really love Arthur and John as the show progresses ❤️

Tom White

The way you guys analyse the show is so good, helps me pickup on stuff that I missed the first time I watched it. Thank you!

Raheem Nazir

So Tommy and the Shelby's are also Romany Gypsies like the Lees only they don't live the Gypsy life of travelling anymore. As for the ages. In Season 1 it's: Arthur: 32 Tommy: 29 Finn: 11 As for John and Ada there is inconsistencies/retconning with their ages by the scriptwriters because John is supposed to be 24 in Season 1 and Ada is supposed to be 3 years younger than Freddie (who is the same age as Tommy) but in later seasons it is always said that John is the 3rd eldest sibling and is older than Ada. But that's not possible if he's 24. I think initially Ada was 26 but they retconned it to make Ada younger than John so we can assume she's around 24 in Season 1 and John is 25.

"Pikey" is also a derogatory term for English Gypsies as well. He also called the Shelby's "Gypsy Scum". Also, Both Freddie and Ada is in their mid-twenties here, not fresh outta highschool lol.

Admitedly i'm not the best on these terms as not from the community and didn't grow up around too many people who were, but I have met some travellers and understand it's as follows: You have Travellers which is generic term for nomads, and the polite way to refer to Irish nomads is to call them Irish Travellers, but you do also have the fairs alluded to in this episode. Then you have Gypsies which refer specifically to Romani Travellers. The word Gypsy is often used as pejorative by people not from the traveling community, and often fired at all travellers regardless of whether they are Irish or Romani which is why many are offended by the term, though some still use it. In america you might liken it to calling a black person a 'negro', yes your just stating their ethnicity, but it's obviously done in a contemptuous way. The word Pikey is always offensive term to describe Irish Travellers, often also used as an insult between people who are not from a traveling backgrounds to insinuate bigoted stereotypes associated with the traveling community, such as that they are poor, unintelligent, thieves of poor moral character. It's almost like calling a straight person a 'faggot' or a 'dyke' or even calling a man a 'pussy' or a 'tart'. Like the worst thing you can be is from that community. A streetwise person would never use this term if they were in a pub travellers might frequent, as a racist might think twice about using the N word at a pub in Brixton. Just to note because some of the descriptions might sound harsh, and they are, but I don't condone the use of the word Pikey or the use of Gypsy as an insult, and i don't think that being homosexual or a woman is the 'worst thing you can be'. If I have misrepresented anything here, especially if someone is from community, please do correct me.

It was a really good épisode, it's truly rare for a show to get my full attention, but that one really did.

Cillian Murphy is from Cork, which is in Ireland! Black Velvet Band is a classic Irish song, the most famous version is by 'The Dubliners'

In the UK gypsy as a name is still fairly normal, and official travellers groups in the UK have specifically pushed back at attempts at accepting it as an insult or slur and made it clear it isn't and can be used. But that is a unique UK situation, in other countries things are normally very different. Obviously trying to use it as an insult isn't good though and is a different situation.

Matthew Walls

Please please please would it be possible for more than one episode a week? Been watching you both for years and never expected you to react to one of my favourite shows.

Andy Jarquin

I'm gonna warn you now Steph, get something to squeeze like a pillow or a stress ball for later seasons, cause the show gets SOOOOO stressful lmao i fear for your nerves

Matthew Wise

Yeah, I don't often hear it used as an insult here to be honest but as a boxing fan I hear people like Tyson Fury and BJS embrace the term. I think the bigger problem is using it to describe the wrong group. Much more negative connotations in places like Italy I think.

I thought you put it pretty eloquently, but ya to compound on what MichaelB commented, it's really about WHO and HOW these words are being used that turn a noun to a slur, so on the one hand, there are many within every minority community who reclaim these terms, like in the LGBT community we throw around faggot, dyke, twink ect. and often refer to ourselves as queer rather than the "polite terms" but feel insult if someone else used it as a slur, but I think by the same token, the slurs become worse when used by someone who's historically on the antagonistic side of your group, and I think that's what the show is compounding. It's not just anyone calling them gypsy or pikey, but it's basically spat at them by people who are historically set against them, looking down on them because they "earned their place" through "legitimate" or "proper" means unlike these "lesser folk" coming in and trying to tread on their territory, essentially which is what gives it that extra punch of "you are the worst thing to exist" The writing of this show is sooo good at showing the disparity between not just the haves and have-nots, but also the immigrants and how they basically had to fight amongst themselves for their place in societies that couldn't fit them in. It was easier to blame hardships on the people who were coming in and upsetting the balance, forced to commit crimes to survive, instead of the system that made it that way to begin with, and this is where we see the use of slurs being weaponized, because it stops being just a label or name-calling and turns into an accusation, and like you were saying, insinuating all the stereotypes that they are dumb, inbred immigigrant thieves. Usually the slur being used has some kind of specific connotation. ie. Redneck = unintelligent working class ex slaves who are good for nothing but working out in the sun with their heads down. Historically "rednecks" were cowboys, Mexican slaves brought to ranches to herd cattle or work farms. Hillbilly = inbred mountain folk who live like animals, Cracker = slave traders/the lower class free-persons who cracked whips for a living, Negro = a specific place in South Africa that sold slaves to the UK and states, and then the later variation formed as purposeful mispronunciation. I don't know enough about UK and Irish immigrant history to understand where things like "pikey" come from, but it probably has a specific context to it kinda like "Irish ex-slaves who were put to work putting pikes in railroads" or something to that effect. I'd be curious to know if there's something specific the show is hinting on by having Kimber use "pikey" the way he did. There's something more there than just your standard faire of blue-collar bigot looking down on an immigrant 🤔 (P.s. I apologize for my heavy use of offensive language as well. As a linguistic Anthropology student, I find this area of language very interesting because of the cultural building that is involved in this kind of language and I think it's a key thing in this show, though I don't understand a lot of it specifically just yet. It's definitely written to be pointed and poignant or purposeful. Definitely doing some research into this area of UK history)

Johnny boy my goat. Not the brightest fellow around, but i love his spirit

Thomas being in the Somme is nuts. The last great battle of WWI. Lasted 6 months and more people died in the battle than almost any other.

Rostislav

Poorly organized capitalism led to communism, the threat of communism forces capitalism to improve, after communism, new capitalism looks like paradise... Profit.

Rostislav

There is a World Press Freedom Index that evaluates countries according to various indicators and ranks them. A free press does exist in many countries, although you live in the US, which is classified as “problematic” according to this index. The US is closer to the middle of the list, not great but not terrible :)

Zak

during the war, solidarity with the royal family was actually low for quite some time. The royal family had to change their name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor, over issues that they were seen as too German. Same happened in Russia where the Tsarina was a German princess, of course in Russia it ended with revolution and the entire central Imperial family being shot in a cellar.

Klaus

So what im gathering from it is that wes hasnt seen it either... so theres no spoiling going on as far as im aware lad
