This reaction is so good, it honestly feels like you’re already part of the cast

izkath

I think this is episode 2 guys, their story discussion was 1st ep, but no worries you can watch it after :)

Jo

Please review the earlier episode; I believe this one is episode 2.

Paty

Your reactions are always so fun to watch because you have knowledge of everything 😂

I’ll comment my thoughts later when my brain’s more awake lol it’s currently 3 am and my hand-brain coordination is non existent

me personally I've loved hearing the various point of views on such broad and grand topics, tho synthesizing a personal answer myself would require days of thinking on my own. I see the validity in each of their answers and I found myself agreeing with each (or at least part) of the points that they've made.

When did doctors take over as the primary governing bodies of health in society? It was the 20th century (so early 1900s). It's actually devious what the infancy stage of modern medicine did to established practices like midwifery, all in the name of capital gain (at least in the US). That's when the sectors of medicine and public health diverged, resulting in the glamorification(?) of doctors as a profession and their increase in social status and social currency. That divergence is also when the decline of patient-focused care in the US began (imo, and we're trying to bring it back now lol). That's when clout and money entered the chat fr (although the clout part was really always there, at least in some regard). It's been a while since I read up on all this, but a quick read that could give you an overview of this transitional period, if you can find it, is called "Antognonism and Accomodation: Interpreting the Relationship Between Public Health and Medicine in the United States During the 20th Century." The smear campaign that the early medical society enacted on midwives and similar at-home medical practices (speaking only about the valid ones that, while primitive(?), were effective) was devastating and effective. Couple that with the polio crisis and how doctors were lauded for developing an actual cure for a disease (an extremely rare occurrence in medicine), and doctors had the best PR they could ask for in the 1900s. Another great book that gives a great cataloging of that shift is "Polio: An American Story." It even covers when the Rockerfellers came in and started funding medical schools and research labs--really, polio was the genesis for all of it. P.S. just wanna note that I'm saying all this as a med school student with a masters in public health (and I've personally seen the damage that the divorcing of public health and medicine has done to fututre generations including us today, particularly in areas like the US maternal mortality rate--don't even get me started on the racial disparities of who's dying either 🙄) so I had to learn all this for my degrees lol

The funny part is we sucked at medicine back then STILL 😂😂 it took us sooooo long to develop the polio vaccine bc we sucked and made so many mistakes and errors that seem obvious to us now. But when you defame/invalidate your only "competition," there's nothing standing in your way of becoming the end-all be-all on "public health." But it wasn't really until Polio that doctors became a validated and respected career/profession in America. Also kinda became more accessible bc of all the funding. But yeah, the polio book covers most of this if you're interested.

It might not be the case in SK, but in America (or at least in my school) we learned Latin and Greek Latin and Greek are the basis of ALL medical terminology in America/English, so learning makes your life infinitely easier as students. It's all basically nothing but combining prefixes and suffixes. I started my medical journey in high school (basically did dual enrollment where half my day was at a college/hospital and the other half was back at school) and whenever we weren't at the hospital, we'd be learning medical terminology (alongside bedside care, how to take vitals, how to properly wash your hands, etc).

I’m so excited that you guys are watching this show!! I love hearing all of your opinions and the philosophical ideas you bring into relationships, as well as how you perceive the world in other BTS content. I also enjoy the little stories and tidbits you share. Hearing other people’s perspectives and life experiences—especially when they differ from mine—is always so entertaining and interesting. So, when I was watching this series for the first time, I immediately thought, 'Wow, you guys would have such amazing thoughts on these topics.' I can’t wait to hear them all!

Jo

I really enjoy these kinds of reactions. It’s not BTS-related, but it would be great if you could do a reaction to Rotten Mango's Sewol ferry tragedy vid.

Wes And Steph

I think that’s so smart to do if going into the medical field!

Wes And Steph

Thank you so much for sharing the book! I’m very interested! And I’m thankful for people like you in the medical field who have an appreciation of both!!!

Veence Porras

this is why i have been a subscriber for years. you guys are ridiculously intelligent compared to other reactirs lmao

Rinakin

The way I was traumatised by Balzac and his books in high school…. Bc we had to read SOOOO MUCH of his works AND in French lol 😂 the moment the writer mentioned his name I had to eye roll so hard

Doradora

I really like this show! Thank you for reacting to it and looking forward to the next episode:)

Ami

same. but I get they have kids and lives so I appreciate that the BTS reactions are usually long 1hour+ reactions

Ami

im nowhere near their level of success and i obviously dont know what they're feeling when they see their poster or hear their song in public, BUT i like to make paintings and/or sculptures for my loved ones. the ones i make for myself i have no problem looking at, yet when i go to one of their houses and see my art on display, i have to look away and avoid looking at it the whole time im there. its embarrassing and idk why lol.

Vishwa Joshi

The volleyball player, Dr. sim mentioned reminded me a lot of Jin.

I'm way late to this but oh well lol. Actually, for once I have an anecdote that isn't one of my diagnoses or traumas! 😂 who'd have thought? But on the description of mania and him saying why it's a financial burden and such. Omg! That was the best description of mania I have ever heard~ 😩 my mom has bipolar and her mania doesn't represent in things like what's most commonly talked about, like the staying up for a week straight, feeling super happy and starting 6 new hobbies, or things like that (though the irrationally pissy stereotype is true for her) but my biggest tell for her high periods is when she cleans the whole house, throwing a bunch of stuff away, and when she goes to the dollar store and spends HUNDREDS of dollars on multiples of everything with "big plans" to either have a backstock of stuff like a doomsday prepper, or to give out gifts for bdays and holidays. She will also be super easy to influence and becomes a total klepto. But ya, one of her manic episodes, in just 1 week, she maxed out 4 credit cards and started a 5th one, launching us into 12k in debt. 😶 I started having to take her cards away from her and giving her an allowance whenever she appeared to be becoming manic, but it only made her other behaviors worse 😅 thankfully she's on new meds that work. They make her narcoleptic, but she doesn't quite go off the rails when manic anymore and her depressive episodes don't seem as intense or drawn out as they used to be. But ya, that car thing bout killed me because that is so her 😂 if she was into cars, we'd be in trouble. She just buys 20 of the same shampoo and conditioner. Ok, after watching a bit further where Balzac had to keep firing assistants, I definitely think he was probably bipolar as the dude says. The fact that guy would get fixated and be able to write as much as he did, and probably going days without sleep to do so.. it sounds like that obsessive tendency that bipolar can present with for sure (not that I'm an expert. I just did a lot of studying when mom got diagnosed so I could try to understand her better and how to help) Also about Balzac's death. It sounds like he was saying that Balzac ONLY laid in bed and couldn't do anything, and the wife wasn't interested in him, so all she did was go shopping, meaning he was left unattended a lot. It's possible he died from malnourishment or an accident in the home, or maybe if they didn't have someone to light fires for him, he could've died from cold or something. Also, I learned through first-hand experience, you can develop certain illnesses, infections, or bloodclots from being bed-bound if you're not getting up and moving around enough because of pressure. So that's where my head went, but ya, I'm sure there are illnesses back then that could kill you where one of the symptoms is blindness. Like, isn't something like meningitis kind of like that? Or syphilis? Edit: editing this after seeing more of the show a day later 🤣 I was wrong about his death apparently. Huh.. caffeine can kill you like that? 😶 I really need to cut back my pepsi habit 😅

New comment cuz my last one got too long on Balzac 😅 but on Wesley hating reading comments, saaaaaame! 🫣 I was co-writing a story with my ex, and I told her that the ONLY way I'd allow her to post it anywhere was if she posted it on her accounts and left me anonymous, and never ever showed me any comments, even the good. Not just because my social phobia is so bad that the idea of anyone reading anything I make made me extremely sick to think about, but also because I'm extremely influenced by opinions on that kind of thing. If someone likes something that I don't necessarily like or agree with for my writing, or they come up with theories, I'll find myself writing for them instead of myself, and if someone didn't like it, I took it extremely personally, I'd have a meltdown and want to delete everything (I have in the past) and give up, or I'd end up being too scared of writing my usual style or intended plot points. Anyway, so I blissfully and ignorantly went on writing comfortably, letting my ex handle the social side of it and then my ex doomed me.. they revealed to me that we apparently BLEW UP on 3 writing websites and had over 70k readers on each platform and she decided to show me some comments.. when I say I freaked out, I mean.. I fully developed some severe writing paralysis and had to go on a 8 month hiatus, and even then I struggled to get through each chapter until our story came to an end 😅 I genuinely don't know how anyone that does social media things professionally handle the comments or interactions. Hell, even the idea of publishing makes me want to hide in a hole lol plus it's so taxing to have to bear people's opinions, so I definitely relate on some level

Sammy

I loved this reaction so muuuch, it felt like you were panelists along with these people and your input was so good. This show is truly awesome and unique.
