at 14:35 it shows debris hit shins heart but his brothers tag that he etched Rei's name into saved him

I loved the discussion about collective vs individual responsibility at the end! I think when comparing Nazi Germany to the Republic, you have to consider that Nazi Germany was a dictatorship whereas the Republic is a representative democracy. I also agree that the General is a super interesting character. 0:36 Well remember, the only times we've heard speaking from the Legion are from black sheep and shepherds. So we can assume they may not have given commands in language before they acquired severed heads. Here's some details from the novel that covers this episode's events that expand on the story/worldbuilding (there's no spoilers for future episodes or novels here): 3:10 In the first episode where they are in Giad, one of the military members mentioned that the Pararaid mimics a power that "a certain family" is capable of. In the novel, it is explicitly stated that the Pyrope race (red eyes and red hair) have psychometric abilities and that some Pyrope families have the rare ability to communicate telepathically with blood relatives. This dialogue was condensed in the anime. Anyway, that does help to make Shin's claim more believable since he has Pyrope blood (red eyes). 14:40 That's his brother's dog tag. You can barely make out his carving of "Rei". He didn't leave it behind at the memorial with the rest of his comrades tags. In this arc, there's a lot of shots focusing on Shin's shoulder and Lena's breastpocket. This is Rei's tag and the letter spearhead left her respectively. The first time I watched this I thought they were just showing Lena's boobs lol. But they're just panning to that letter whenever she talks about her former squad. 15:00 There's a Spearhead style execution squad for each cardinal direction. Spearhead is the eastern one and Sledgehammer is the northern one. The guy who set off the bomb is Sledgehammer's commander like how Shin was Spearhead's commander.

29:27 "The Legion are defeated... And now you got the 86 and uhm... Eldians living together." - That's a different show! Hah. Attack on Titan on the mind. Both shows do share similarities.

At 19:19, I find this particular scene strikingly beautiful because their boots symbolizes the state of their ideals; Lena's being polished, untarnished, and well-kept, while Jerome's being dirty, and worn-out.

That ending 💀 I think I lost 10 yrs off my life, yeesh.. (Warning: my message is going to get pretty political from here. I am only going to say what has been reported, however as it relates to the experiences happening in the show. I'm not looking for a debate on this. If you do not like politics, I recommend not reading my message. Please keep in mind I'm only bringing real world politics as a way to humanize what's going on in the show, and why I think the presented situation is more complicated than just "the San magnolians deserve whatever they got coming." This is more of a thought experiment) My personal thoughts on the issues you bring up is that I agree. The people of a country aren't a monolith and it is shockingly easy to be complacent and go about your life while your country is making horrible decisions. For example, look at what's happening in the U.S right now. Women, LGBTQ+, and people of color are under attack right now as we speak. It's happening slowly, so we just go about our lives without actively getting involved. Some people are scared to, some people think "it doesn't involve me," and some think "it won't get that bad." Yet multiple mirrors of what happened to create Nazi Germany are occurring. We are being told by the people who know and understand this that it's getting bad, but we ignore it. Do we all deserve to die because right now people of color, citizens and immigrants alike, are getting attacked by the government and we aren't out there fighting for them? I know it's a bit of a heavy take, but it's actually very close to the shows concept. 😅 my cousin's family (his mom's ex boyfriend's family) all Mexican American citizens, keep getting struck by ICE at their jobs, their communities, ect. repeatedly. They are arresting everyone in whole unit apartments, whether they're Hispanic or not, American or not. We very well could see a real world situation like the 86 at this rate. So that's just something I think we should be thinking about when we watch this show. And ya, the one's who actively treat the 86 like trash probably do deserve the worst, but this show even reminded us that there are good people in the military who treat them as human, and civilians who care about the 86 but don't know how to help or feel like it's hopeless to try, or are even scared to get involved. It is a difficult situation when you don't have enough people fighting for the same cause, because then most who want to fight are scared to, and others may not even know there is a cause to fight for, and then there's potential the people who do fight die or are punished for it, like we are seeing with the protests. (For those who might be unaware, there have been peaceful protests that haven't turned into riots, where the military sent in the Marines and National Guard without provocation and attacked. They were harshly pushed down along with the riots and violent protests, then conflated together. It was so bad, even the retired military Lieutenant General of the White House has condemned the orders as inhumane, disgusting, and a dangerous line we've crossed into towards becoming like fascist, Nazi Germany.) There is also the censorship going on in the show (and rl) where the people are being told "nobody is dying out there, everything is fine~" or "we only took away the inhuman criminals" if they do know about the 86 being used as weapons. They are likely fed all the same b.s. we get fed, and people actually believe it at some point. That the 86 really aren't human, or in our case "we are only removing the criminals and cartel" so that's something that makes me give them some grace. Humans are very easily swayed by our world views, problematic or not, and if enough people push the right buttons, a lot of innocent people become complacent to, or party of some pretty horrible atrocities. That's kinda why history and shows like this are SO important. They keep us mindful. But when they start getting censored, or propaganda starts getting introduced.. how are we supposed to know better until we learn? And how are we to learn when everyone around us is making sure we don't trust the information given? I'm really enjoying how the show is handling such a difficult and complex conversation

I didn't even see the letter, so I'm so glad you pointed this out 😂 appreciate all the contexts. Also, the part pointing out the political standpoints is very interesting and kind of relates to my own stance in my comment and has given me some further thought. (tldr of my comment; instead of nazi Germany, I compare the story of 86 to the current U.S political climate because of what we're seeing happening to all the marginalized groups, but particularly the Hispanic communities rn and say that we can't really condemn the San Magnolias as a monolith, or else we should condemn ourselves as well for also being complacent) but I do want to add to your statement that Germany wasn't originally a dictatorship when Hitler took over. He was placed in power through democratic process as well by buying off government officials, legal moves, placing people who shared his vision into powerful roles so they could help him elevate further, and made procise political movements that would earn the trust and respect of the people (such as taking credit for getting them out of a deep depression and famine) so um.. ya, the door was opened for him, THEN he turned it into a dictatorship using all the Republic Democracy's institutions against them. Yikes.

I suppose the "Saint Magnolia First" doctrine is a policy that results in no one coming to help you if things get bad. 😆😆😆

4:04 It's obvious that the author has no idea what war is. All sides behave very illogically; it feels like this is their first battle, as if there had been no years of war. Why is there barbed wire? Why are the trenches so large and open? Why are there crowds of soldiers? Where is the drone reconnaissance, why wasn't an artillery strike launched on the enemy's concentration points? All the soldiers move in such crowds as if artillery didn't exist, but we can see that it does... very strange.

27:50 Well, I am part of such a group. They starved us artificially, millions died, they threw us into wars like meat, we had independence for a while, but they want to subjugate and destroy us again right now. But yes, of course I wish them all dead, especially every night when I hear their rockets and drones over my house 🤷‍♂️

i think yall would love tanya the evil please at least maybe think about it

At some point you have to make strategical sacrifices, but probably they've never faced such a huge attack, just "skirmishes" and even then they are not that experienced soldiers cause most of them probably died during those 10 years of war as you saw most soldiers die if the legion has a slight advantage. most reconisence is only rudimetary cause the skies are blocked and radar and such is blocked by the mayflies, they only know they are comming. And author could of obvioustly done a better job they are portraying the devastation instead of strategy, it of course could be better. if both sides behaved logically there wouldn't be a show, and humans would of been destroyed already or the legion wouldn't be able to advance through fronts they'd be preemptively striked and destroyed. You can't give everyone a mech either, of course you shouldn't have infantry though. If you take into account 40k why would you have infantry even against walking tanks, they still employ "fodder" so its not far fetched to have regular humans even against legion with AT rifles. most of your complaints come down to wouldn't be visually dessernable amount of loss if trenches were super well build or if you didn't have some sort of cutoff like barbed wire on the sides, remember they stll have walking mines that can get stuck in that etc.

Reminder

its obvious you can not distinguish author from anime-director. Don't lump everything unto author.

Acutally, you need to read the book to find out the answer. Anime did not mention that much. Infantry and barbed wire are used to defend against the human look suicide boom. As most of the feldress pilot are not capable to shoot fast moving and large amount of target, infantry are needed to shoot them off from a distant. As Legion start to learn and become human thinking. The tactics Legion use before is kind a trap to make others think they will use the same tactics which the self boom humanoid will attack first and followed with the main force. For another question you curious about not using drones. Because for 86 this series have mentioned in the first few episode, Legion have flying drone bird across the sky which will block normal transmission and also the book mention that those birds will attempt suicide attack against any object fly in the sky. So for military usage are nearly non exist in 86. It is not about author not having common sense. I think you can watch novel, which explain more the 86 world design.

And it is quite interesting that this scene also mean Jerome's has made his decision to defend and protect Lena until the end. The dirty boots can refer to Jerome pick up the boots that he used during war time (The novel has mentioned that Jerome was a former soldier when Legion start to invade San Magnolia. He took the boots out means he is ready for war)
