I can't believe they didn't recognize Seorina from Business Proposal (the girl with extra Ice cream right in front of Suho)

What an amazing reaction! This is my second time watching this drama, and you guys made me cry so much… I love how empathetic and real and invested you are 💜 Thank you! On the ending discussion: it’s a really interesting topic and I think I agree with what Wes is saying. I’m in psychotherapy training right now which (at least in Germany) is very comparable to becoming a doctor - it takes between 8 - 10 years if you do it full time. I started at age 18 and am gonna be finished in 2 years at around 27, but I have several colleagues in their 30s or 40s or 50s, even one who’s 65! So it’s very possible, but it takes a HUGE commitment to do a career path like this later in life, you have to really want it. Whereas if you start it at college age, I think it’s easier since you’re just going to university together with your peer group and you can have other passions alongside it. It’s a tough situation and very nuanced. And fully agree, there’s a difference between thinking your job/career is “fine” and having side hobbies, and being absolutely miserable day-to-day. I’m very glad you found what makes you happy and fulfilled, Wes! I think eun gyeoul has a very natural talent for studying/doing academics, and could “easily” continue on that path on auto-pilot, but probably has no real passion for it like he does with music. And the dad is very well-intentioned, but does add pressure. Looking forward to episode 2!!

so genuinely people call kids from deaf parents CODAs. Child Of Deaf Adults. There was a movie that came out a couple of years ago called CODA about a girl in the same position as Eungyeol. Also just for the music part, there's a coda mark in the sheet music and then there will be the coda which will be like maybe 2 lines that's a different ending. So you would play to where it says "D.S. Al Coda", then go back to that mark and play until it says "To Coda" then there will be a separate section from the main music that's like a secret ending with another coda mark. hard to explain without visuals, but it makes sheet music kind of like a choose your own adventure novel.

I follow a few disabled people on yt and learned that everything we find convenient was actually made by and for disabled people, and we just benefitted off of it. Like speech to text, screen readers, video chat capabilities on phones, AI functions on phones were just a few Molly Burke listed. Also things we don't think about, like makeup brands who use containers with flat edges as opposed to round, or who put detailed information on the bottles like "warm neutral" (for blind people to use makeup, they need help from sighted people or AI photo readers. Now there's even a new AI that if you take a picture of a few shades, it will describe them to you) and they make bigger, more easily holdable ends of mascara or liner and things for people with mobility issues. These all come from trying to make the world more accessible 😊

Molly

excited to watch this for the first time alongside you guys

2nd comment after falling asleep the first time lol but I wanted to say that I wasn't sure I was gonna like any of the listings this time around besides Mr. Queen (which is a time travel one) and flower of evil, but actually.. this one has me hooked already. 🥰 it's so sweet already and I love shows with disability representation and I DEFINITELY love shows with learning music. So excited for this one now 💜 I feel like Steph is right that the show is gonna be about the pressure of expectations placed on the younger son and his struggle to choose between familial piety and obligation, or following his dreams and passion and be true to who he actually is. Me and my cousin took a psychology class together and got interested in the concept of child parentification (me and her both are parentified children) and I kind of feel this is a good example of how child parentification looks on an innocent level, and from what I've seen and heard, this is something that occurs to all children with disabled or ill parents, where at some point, the kid has to become an adult from a young age because they are responsible or feel responsible for taking care of their family in some shape or from, instead of being allowed to just be kids. We learned that if someone tells a kid "you're such an old soul" that's usually a sign of some kind of imbalance happening that is making them mature too quickly. It's a very interesting area of study anyway, so I look forward to seeing how this show handles it. 😊

Yay I'm so happy you started this drama! I've been looking forward to this since I just finished my Intro to Deaf Culture course 😊! I saw the look of confusion(?) on Wes' face during the CODA scene, and yes, hearing children of Deaf adults are called CODAs standing for Child of Deaf Adult. There is also KODA where the K stands for "Kid" to represent an actual child. But as far as I know most people use CODA. Not so fun fact: At some point in the reaction you were talking about phones and how technology has advanced so far, when young Eun-gyeol was on FaceTime with his dad. And I was thinking about how the dude who invented the telephone, was actually integrated with the Deaf community of his. He had a Deaf mother and Deaf wife! The not-so-fun fact comes from the fact that he was a strong promoter/believer in oralism (prioritizing speech/oralism over sign language) and did cause great harm to the Deaf community :C through that since he opened a school for the Deaf that was focused on the oralism method. There is a movie that was released in 1985 called "Love Is Never Silent" that I had to watch for class, but I believe is a genuinely good movie (made me cry 😭) that's about a CODA and it features Deaf actors who played the Deaf parents! I highly recommend watching it on your own. Anyways enough of this long comment lol! When I share info I tend to go overboard 😂.

Maybe this is a sign to rewatch the drama with you guys since people seem to like it so much. Can't remember much of the plot. I just remember that apart from Choi hyun wook's character, the drama annoyed me so much I stopped watching even though I was at the latter half😭. I liked it at the beginning though

Sa_ji

in the future hoping for Hospital Playlist (2020) BEST KDRAMA with music.

Kaylie .

This is my first time watching this too. It's fun to watch a new drama together. No idea where the plot is going after episode 1 but I'm excited to experience it with you both for the first time. :)

Oh wow, it's rare to see someone on the internet praising "Love Is Never Silent", really iconic for deaf community movie which helped to understand both points of view (deaf people and CODAs) with great empathy. Phyllis Frelich and Ed Waterstreet crushed their performances as deaf parents of the main character (beautifully played by Mare Winningham), they both made many good things for deaf community on the theatre department. That TV movie came up before Marlee Matlin won Best Actress Oscar for her elegant performance in "Children of a Lesser God" becoming the first deaf Oscar winner (it's wild, though, that the next deaf winner for acting happened only after 35 years when Troy Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor for CODA in which Matlin played his wife). I'm glad that you mentioned that film, thank you! I don't know if you saw it or not, but I recommend to watch "...and Your Name Is Jonah" (1979), it used to be on YouTube for free, but now it's only on the streaming services. It's about a young deaf kid and his hearing parents trying to understand how to deal with his diagnosis, it probably was the earliest movie to point out about the need for building and sustaining a deaf community in the US. It's not strong film as "Love Is Never Silent", but definitely an important one in raising the awareness about deaf community which was almost zero in the 1970s.

Just started watching this with you, haven't watched on my own and I think you guys are too traumatized
