Yeeeesssssss

Raketen Sven

What a journey you will soon experience!

Oscar Medina

Time for peak. Also, guys please be gentle about lore talk. This series has lot of lore that's less relevant to Fate zero than people think.

Sarkkoth

Not my preferred ordering but I think you'll still have fun regardless. Looking forward to watching this after work.

JohnnyBSMK

I would summon Musashi Miyamoto as my servant. A legendary samurai who slayed over 60 people in duels across his life.

Shiroufan11

I think that both the opening and ending can be watched next episode, there isn't any spoilers in them

kiki

Just to warn y'all, though i'm sure you both got a general vibe from this first episode, this franchise will handle very heavy content, so be prepared! I can't wait to hear your thoughts and discussions, it's been a long ass time so i'm very excited to rewatch with you guys <3

Omer Durrani

The journey has begun and looking forward to every single reaction to fate, HAVE A GREAT TIME AND ENJOY THIS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME UNIVERSE!

Hayate

Yorokobe shonen! We started Fate!

Taro

EXCITED !!!!

mimiyowa

RAAAAAH I need more (pretty please)

yuuno scraia

A little clarification: We have a few partys in this game now Tohsaka Tokiomi - unknown servant (the guy in red that you called a vampire) Kotomine Kirei - Hassan (assassin) (the "priest" of the church) Emiya Kiritsugo (+ Iri [Einzbern]) - unknown servant (presumed to be Arthur Pendragon, saber class) (the mage slayer) Waver Velvet - unknown servant (your guess is Alexander the Great) (the Student that stole from archibald) Matou Kariya - unknown servant (presumably berserker class) (Original Heir to the matou's, that left the family) Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald - unknown servant (the teacher from the clock tower) Those are the masters and servants that we got to see in this episode So we are still missing one Master and one servant We are also missing confirmation on 5 of the 6 Servents classes Sidenote: Because it wont be told in the anime if i recall it correctly, Sakuras Mum does not know about the Crest Worms. Think back to what Archibald was teaching. Bloodline is everything, so if you could get your hands on the magic of another bloodline, it could give you an edge over others.

Raketen Sven

THIS! I personally hate skipping openings and endings since ops set the tone and make it more immersive before the ep even starts.

mimiyowa

Both the opening and ending are safe next episode btw ^^

Hassan Jameel

yaay! time for peak! the op should be spoiler free from next episode onwards

Kamy

Also, Fate is originally a game franchise!

sasha

Yeah mage family as no morals when it comes to continue there bloodline or further they’re magecraft

Zen

Hi, just to lay the ground and clear some things: - If a summoning is done without a relic, the Heroic Spirit summoned will be someone with a similar mental/tendency/ideal/constitution/personality with the summoner/master. - The older the Heroic Spirit, the more mystic (mystery) they would have, making them more powerful. This in turn would make younger Heroic Spirits (post Industrial Revolution) less powerful or downright unsummonable due to not having enough mystic. - A Heroic Spirit are able to be summoned in a different class as long as they're qualified for it. - As you guys have guessed, any heroes with a recorded "period of madness" in their tales/stories are able/qualified to be summoned as a Berserker. - Gods (Divine Spirit) are not summonable through normal means. They're unable to cross into the mortal plane because the Age of The Gods are over (there's a whole story/saga about this). - Think the world in Fate like a huge tree with millions of branch (parallel worlds). The main trunk is the "main world" acting as the pillar which establishes/dictates THE rules; it is called "Pan-Human History" where Humanity thrives, while the branches are worlds where myriad of "other" possibilities exist. When those possibilities intersect/clashes, it's called "Fate", hence the title of the franchise. These world-buildings and rules are akin to a blank canvas where anyone can write their own FATE. Who's the actors for the Masters and who's their Servants going to be in your Holy Grail War? This is what makes Fate so good in my opinion.

The Anime Dude

Les Goooo, am really excited for this one - it can feel like a lot, but Fate/Zero is my favorite fate, so mostly just hope y’all enjoy the journey! Y’all tracked way better than I did when I first watched this episode - good job by Wes to understand the familial relations/connections we were shown right off rip!

Hayate

No, the opening spoils the identity of the masters and servants they don't know about yet

ElijahLew

I really hope this is gonna be a double episode weekly like Eight-Six because I just can't get enough HAHA

sasha

Hassan is the name of the chief of a cult of assassin they’re also the origin of the word assassin and also what the assassin group come from in Assassin Creed ti try and give an idea of who he is

Joshua Moore

Please I beg of you watch two episodes at a time

Brnden

You guys did a good job with how much this first episode throws at you! Fate is so heavy on jargon it can be confusing even for experienced fans

Matthew Wise

If you ever watch Fate/Apocrypha I would love you watch back this reaction haha. To help you have fun with your fantasy servant matchups, key aspects that determine power are: Divinity: Higher levels of divinity will massively boost stats, though its usually very taxing on the mage, summong a full god wouldn't be viable. Popularity: Another major boost is how famous they are, well known heroes will out power lesser known ones *generally* Age/Originality: You get a bit of a boost for being older because magic used to be stronger, but you have to go ancient before this really starts to matter. Originality is similar but it's more about being the first version of something that gives a bit of a boost. Neither of these things seem to be as important as the above things. Feats: What they acomplished in life will have a significant baring on what unique abilities they might possess which can be game changing if they are particularly impressive, but they can be limited by the class the servant is summoned into. Class: Usually determines what aspects of the characters myth you have access to, and there are special class based features, but you can leave that out of your theory crafting. there's other major modifiers like country/land, time period and summoner but they won't impact your fantasies much. Although if your battle takes place in america, american heroes will be massively boosted, but you would probably be better off going the native american route if you want to benefit from some of the other boosts. Love how hyped you both are, when i first got into anime and discovered fate 2006 i was super hyped for a similar reason. Fate Zero is my fave anime to this day.

eXxCeZz

I dont care what fate you watching, as long as its fate lmfao

Infinite Winds

Not by W&S' usual standards. As the OP at least has yet unseen characters

Tom Harris

I'm sad I didn't sub 6 months in the future - wish I could binge these!

Omer Durrani

Oh man with all their knowledge and name drops they have done JUST IN THE FIRST EPISODE. WE NEED TO GET THEM THROUGH ALL OF FATE THROUGH MULTIPLE POLLS AFTER THE FLAGSHIP PLEASE

eXxCeZz

Think you both are happy to not know what the worms actually are in the VN

TxSadz

LOOOOL Just saying the guy u called lucifer is my favourite character

Micah Steinhoff

On Wes' idea for a book, I think you'd be really really interested in "Seven Blades in Black" by Sam Sykes. While I don't necessarily think it was executed as well as it could have been writing-wise, the actual setting and premise was very well done. Essentially a mage had her magic taken away by other jealous mages, and she hunts them down with a gun and clever tactics as a final act of vengeance before her execution. Not exactly what the idea was, but definitely adjacent. Anyways, I've never seen this but I'm already super invested, like Wes said, it feels like the beginning of a huge sports tournament. I've been spoiled on only one thing, that we'll probably find out next episode (probably), super excited for the next one.

Shiroufan11

I mean, yeah? at 160~ episodes it would take 3 years to finish MHA. In contrast fate zero takes 6 months at 1 ep a week

Ale

It's because it has more seasons as you said lol

Rostislav

You were right to point that out at the beginning; the director does assume that you’ve seen the previous season. But that’s not a big deal (I guess)—the details will become clear gradually, though it might be a little harder for you to follow. Although I watched it in the order the creator intended, so it’s hard for me to say.

Shiroufan11

You seemed to be able to follow the episode without much trouble, a lot of reactors get confused on the relations between the Tohsaka and Matou characters, and the time jumps at the beginning

tsuki

OH MY GOD IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS

Fabien

It's normal if you don't get some stuff at first. Just imagine you're watching Star Wars starting from ep 1 instead of 4. A more complicated version. Just one thing that could help though: remember it's not "our" world, the world in Fate has its own internal logic and lore, for example, "legends" can more or less be considered history. Thus explaining the identity of some servants. The same way, the "church" might not be what you'd expect there, as an organization.

eXxCeZz

Can we count all the Fate series? :D

Fabien

33:32 since it's never totally explained in any anime adaptation and since you ask the question: Hassan (probably several people bore the name over time) was the leader of the "hashashyn" sect, from which the word "assassin" comes from. They were famous for their killing efficiency, a bit like ninjas in Japan, but in the middle east. So yeah, Assassin is the original "assassin".

ElijahLew

The fact that this video has this many comments already and it's only been 5 hours holy.

CD Elio

Wes and Steph wanting to see some historical and fantastical characters and mentioning a few put a smile to my face

Fabien

In Japanese animes, "uncle" is often just a loose translation, not to be taken literally (most of the times at least).

RCG

The length of the video shocked me a bit, lol. I had to look it up and it seems like episode 1 is a special or something, longer than a normal episode. Definitely gonna watch this later when I have more time. I am actually a bit excited to finally get into Fate, high expectations!

Yorutia

Yea, let's skip the unnecessary details. We can keep a lot of the VN-only lore away for now.

Yorutia

"The Grail selects those who most need its power" is a rather bad translation. He meant "those who most earnestly desire its power." (より真摯にそれを必要とする者)

Nikovah Diamond

I am glad everyone voted on this would have never watched it on my own but I am pleasantly surprised I am enjoying this as much as I am

Ethereal

Ufotable prestige anime premiere with a double episode (Fate series + Kimetsu).

Yorutia

It should also be mentioned that someone came up with this genius idea of using this whole masters summoning servants thing as the core concept for a mobile gacha game (->Fate/Grand Order). It was once very popular in Japan and quite literally everyone was talking about it. You can actually hear all these historical/mythical names mentioned in public places because some office men/ladies were discussing the game. It's actually kinda funny.

Holy Arathi

16:09 the priest couldve had a kid prior to becoming a priest.

C

Oh my god. Guys, stop explaining things that get explained later on. Yisus… chill. They don't need to know everything from the start. Also, since Wes&Steph consider cast in the OP and ED as spoiler skip both the ending and opening until episode 8. That’s my recommendation.

Philsi

Man, I forgot how good this show really is.

Holy Arathi

Mordred is Arthur’s son from Arthur’s half sister Morgause aka Morganna or Morgan La Fei.

HopelesslyImmersed

Ive been looking forward to this all week xD. Yay for Fate! Im glad you guys are so perceptive and knowledgeable in regards to myths. George Washington would be an insane and epic heroic spirit. Glad you guys enjoyed the first episode, trust me they threw a lot of info at you but you made sense of it, you did butcher their names xD but its whatevez, you'll remember the names with time :> Can't wait for next week! Hope we get the HxH treatment and get two eps a week 😆

Erik

With 50 eps and 3 movie I hope this gonna be 2 eps/week

HopelesslyImmersed

You should let them find out for themselves, or at least give them some time to process before flat out telling them. Mystery is part of the fun

Drake Chuckle

This series is gonna be quite a ride.

Runhua Tang

West entering the Holy Grail War and summoning Goerge Washington as Rider is a funny idea lol.

David Stern

Wow y’all did a great job keeping track of all this info. This series is known for having pretty confusing lore.

Gelondil

*** PSA for my fellow Fate fans (and for Wes and Steph as well): *** Fate is full of mysteries and complex lore. Most everybody joins this story ignorant of this lore the rules of the magic, and everything else besides. Not knowing exactly what's going on is a normal (I'd even say intended) part of this journey. As we've seen, this ignorance can apply even to main characters!😉 I understand the sentiment of being super excited about bringing others into the fold and wanting to revel in the depth of the story ASAP. But let's not jump the gun by dumping any unnecessary or extra details into the comments unless it's needed. A lot of us are posting stuff here that's far, far beyond the scope of this, the first episode, if it even needs to be posted at all. And some of it is borderline spoilers. Wes and Steph are smart and attentive and will figure out all the important stuff without anybody's hand-holding. And there are a lot of other first-timers here figuring things out as well who probably don't want the answers given to them. So let's let them keep their thrill of discovery. There is plenty of opportunity to sort things out for themselves based on what's in the anime, and the anime alone, without pages of extra footnotes. The anime will provide what answers they need, and then, only if they are really struggling, we can help them with anything they missed. I'm sorry if this came off as a lecture, or preachy, but I felt it had to be said. Thanks for reading, and reacting! 👍

Gavern

There is actually a mobile game for the Fate series that's been going for about ten years, and even has some anime adaptations for its story. And whats funny is that most of the mythical/historical figures you guys mentioned are actually servants in the game. XD Won't specify who though. There is well over 400 different servants in the game as of right now.

Renden

Doesn't quite explain how the current priest had a wife that died...

Gavern

Kariya is the 'friend of the family' kind of uncle. No actual relation to the girls. And the mom doesn't know how the magic of the Matou family works, she didn't know what her daughter was going to go through when they adopted her. A little bit of trivia too, the author of the book this is based off of is know for his dark and gruesome works. His name is Gen Urobuchi, and fans have nicknamed him 'Urobutcher' due to his writing style. *Edit: Also, the series takes place around 1994.

ElijahLew

Don't tell them to watch the OP yet guys it spoils characters and they normally don't want that

S0ulSp4de

It's pretty hard for me to decide if it's ok to explain something because I don't remember when or if it will actually be explained in the show or the following shows. Because of that I actually decide not to explain something. Better save than sorry. :D

Sobieski

please post more than one a week, cause if you gonna do unlimited blade works etc it will take over a year

Eika Mikiku

They will probs do a few eps each week

gruntmaster1

Was great to see how much information you were able to keep track of and knowing about different myths is going to help with the enjoyment, even if Fate tends to take some liberties in the characters. The original Fate was Fate Stay/Night, a visual novel (game, that is mainly a book with spoken dialogue + music and often have multiple routes). Fate/Zero is a prequal to FSN, but the first Fate anime adopted by Ufotable. In FSN there was a bigger mystery of who the servants were and it had a build in wiki keeping track of what knowledge you had of them. This included info of their stats (Strength, Endurance, Agility, Magical Energy, Luck and Noble Phantasm), passive abilities (Protection from Arrows, Riding, Mind's Eye, Magical Defence, etc.) and noble phantasms (you will learn what that is).

NoSoupRice

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance mentioned ?! W taste

Hassan Jameel

Great reaction guys! Just wish more episodes per week lol

Infinite Winds

A lot of people be posting walls of text full of lore, and very few people calling them out for it because it is very hard for anyone to discern what is and isn't a spoiler with how scattered fate lore can be

TK

well i only saw the original fate stay night, then fate stay night UBW so i have no idea how im going to absorb this

qwp

Great serie, can't wait too watch your whole fate reaction

rryutie

You're the best reactors to cover this anime just from how detail oriented and observant you both are, I love that this won, AND that this is the order you're watching in. Super stoked!!

Sappy

I'm very excited. The first few minutes of your reaction had me going "see! this is why we don't skip stay/night". But I'm super hyped either way! Also glad that the volume seem to be a bit louder in your newer reactions, it's perfect.

TerMer3

When you mentioned a book where an assassin has to target wizards it reminded me of a YA book where assassin teams has to analyze, research, and plan hits on corrupted super heroes where superhumans have basically overthrown society. It is The Reckoners series by Brandon Sanderson. Personally, love the series.

NECOdes

Love seeing Wes excited about Fate lore. It's was one of my first anime series and never knew I would go and read hunderds of hours light novels and visual novel (for someone who doesn't like reading) just to get more of its lore. It wouldn't be an understatement saying that this series has changed my life.

Azer S

Yeah. Mage are ruthless. In theory, they are supposed to seek a way to improve the world and follow a code. But they work more like a bunch of mafia groups. What matter is to get stronger and finish your research
