Wes is right, this is the most unique "tempo" I've ever seen a fictional relationship have, it's really entertaining for sure. I hope it ends up somewhere by the end of the season, they have really good chemistry.

Moroni W

I think Sakuta and Mai’s sarcasm and witty remarks makes the romance in this so much stronger!

Eucri Diaz

Really hard to comment anything without spoilers xD So another fun fact, the ED is sung by Mai's voice actress. Something really not common in my experience.

I ended up binge rewatching this show. I liked it more now than when it aired (probably cause i matured). Also, the ending themes are sung by the heroine's voice actors, and they all sing different parts of the same song, so by the end you'll get the whole song, so make sure you watch the ending of the final episode. Shame there weren't subtitles for the lyrics. But the song is called Fukashigi no Karute, which means Mysterious Medical Chart.

To Wes's point, the power system is a bit more soft than hard, but there are aspects to it which follow proper rules in universe and physical knowledge. That's all I can say without spoiling things

SLF needs more love

It is more about seniority so there are cases that someone younger then you in life can be your senpai.

Yorutia

To answer your question at 30:44, Wes was definitely Steph's senpai at school. In Japan, the senpai/kouhai status is almost never tied to age, but experience in doing something or being in an environment. A higher grade student is always a senpai of a lower grade at school. But, if that lower grade student is, say, a more experienced chess player, then they can still be a senpai of the higher grade student, in chess specifically. All regardless of age. So if an 80-yo grandma just started playing Fortnite, she will still call 14-yo little Timmy her senpai.

Not just Frieren but also Anya btw!

These LN couples with the cool long-haired beauty and sarcastic MC (like Yahari too) were clearly inspired by the Monogatari series (which was a huge phenomenon in Japan).

Ethereal

Talking about Kaguya-sama, the special Stairway to Adulthood (~50 min) was released in January. It's a continuation of the Kaguya-sama series.

Stefan

You know how you become one of those 1% of the population sages? When you realise that in the big picure, even if there's someone there to hear the tree fall, it still doesn't matter

Jacob

Futaba also does Anya Forger so do you hear that? haha

jons

the endings do not change every episode, they change every arc (so like every 2-4 episodes). they are sang by the main character of that arc, which is also the character that appears in the ending visuals

Tom Harris

Re your convo about little girls getting popularised on social media etc., I watch a lot of anime videos on Youtube, and I've started being recommended lots of shorts of little girls in swimisuits, so it's big over there and somehow getting pushed by the algorithm, which is despicable.

Racc

bro, it's mothing major but you shouldn't say this things. You could affect their expectations of the show since they don't know there are multiple characters arcs within the show. For all they know all the show is about mai's situation.

teju 00

Frierens voice actor also voices Anya from spy family

Lucjusz Kusiński

Sakuta: "That girl called me creepy and lewd" "And what you did to win her back?" Sakuta: "I doubled down so hard she was intrigued by me"

Lucjusz Kusiński

If you like reading books then I really encourage to read original after watching. Anime cuts off A LOT of slice of life conversations, Sakuta-Mai exchanges and other "author's thoughts". For example when they go to a beach and Mai's mom comes, Sakuta's reaction is "Should I introduce myself?" like Mai is introducing her new boyfriend to a family. If you both like those kind of things then It's really worth it.

Lucjusz Kusiński

Nah that's a stretch I think. It's like saying to them that bunny girl senpai is the title of first book, while next arcs are being called different. It's not a spoiler.

SaltyMango

Senpai is for like upperclassman, age doesn’t matter, if you are working in an office and their is someone 10 years younger than you but they’ve been working there longer than you then they are your senpai

Lucjusz Kusiński

And Kouhai is for under. 先輩 - senpai, before + comrade, comrade that came here before you 後輩 - kouhai, after + comrade, comrade that came after you. The same with sensei, before + life = someone who was born before you and can show you the way. Language etymology is really fun ngl.

Yorutia

And to complete the symmetry, 後生 (kousei) is also a word. It doesn't get used anymore in modern Japanese, but it still appears in old idioms to mean younger generations (e.g. 後生畏るべし = fear the young generation for their huge potentials). Cantonese still regularly use this word, along with (the equivalent of) senpai, kouhai and sensei.

Mad Man Moon

and Gyokuyou from Apothecary Diaries

Mad Man Moon

It's fairly common in anime to have the VA's sing the OP and/or ED, and sometimes with different variations/combinations of the actors singing on different episodes, or sometimes a different version of the song (...and in some shows, different songs altogether).

Ramms

Since were talking bout VA's Mai-san has the same VA as Loulan and Nobara

NoSoupRice

If I am in fact thinking of the same person, the voice actor also started appearing in my feed, which is a lil freaky coincidence. She goes by kdimerc, I've been watching her a lot lately and I have to say she's extremely talented. Right now she is doing characters from Hazbin Hotel and TADC

Cat Huang

was wes drinking an entire jar of chocolate in this ep lmaooooo amazing

Arian Abdolahy

He also drank something else before that, lolol.

Keiichi Akitsuki

i personally fell in love with Sakuta in this bed scene. when she asked Sakuta if they should kiss, it was more out of fear of disappearing and never kissing ever. But Sakuta clarified and said you don't have to kiss me right now (because you will not disappear) and the one you kiss doesn't even have to be me(if you're making this decision out of fear and not love). the way he assuage her fears made me fell in love with the character so much

The Anime Dude

@7:23 towards the end of middle school would’ve made her ~15, but still doesn’t necessarily make it better, when you’re a kid like that & you can’t even trust the parents that are supposed to be looking out for you… can’t imagine how lonely that must feel. 🤕

Dell12 16

Senpai/Kouhai is just related to your seniority in a specific thing so to speak. So in the context of school whoever is in a higher grade than you would be your senpai regardless of age.

Moogi

The whole “Senpai” vs “Kohai” conversation gave me whiplash as soon as I heard “Kohei,” and then immediately imagining a certain college student screaming that name.
