The goal of Kiritsugu's father was to turn himself (or maybe his son) into a vampire, so he could continue his research without the limit of his life expectancy. This is a common theme in re-zero. Magic take very long to explore, and you absolutely can't do it in a lifetime. So traditionally mage just stock their knowledge in a kind of magic hard-drive and implant it on their successor, who does the same with the next generation. This is why the number of generation of mage determine the nobility, it's basically the number of lifespan of research. Kiritsugu's father basically tried to cheat by making himself immortal. And between the flower and injecting it to himself, he totally was planning to test that on humans. This is why Shirley gave him "an early answer". He planned to use people as test subject at some point.

the re:zero threw me off lol

Oscar Medina

Funny enough this is also considered heretical to mages for two reasons. One is the cheating you mentioned. Mages consider that passing down magecraft is part of their philosophy. The second being many mages despite Dead Apostles.

The Anime Dude

Love him or hate him, Kiritsugu is such a well written character. There’s also something endearing in that while he’s shown to sacrifice the few for the sake of the many, he doesn’t allow himself or those closest to him to be an exception to that. He’s consistent in his actions/motivations.

Infinite Winds

Love these episodes every time I'll forever be haunted by the burning question of what cavity of his body was the dead apostle hiding the bees in

I can't wait to hear what they think Stay/Night is gonna be about

Wow, thanks for reading my comment. I understand your point of view more clearly, I didn’t really think of it like that; him not checking more into the family he was getting his kid into totally slipped my mind. I guess it's even more upsetting when you are parents. Thanks for for the full point of view. I hope my comment didn’t feel too agressive, but i really like the character and his way of thinking. Happy we share that. (Little info was that he was desperate to give his daughter away before the Mage association could put their hands on her. So when one of the big 3 family reached out he didn’t really think twice.)

Just another tidbit to add to the whole "Tokiomi giving Sakura away" thing. Mages are very secretive about their families magic. So it tracks that Tokiomi did not know what inheriting the Matou family magic entailed (worm pits, etc.) because the Matous would be sure to keep it a secret, just as any other mage family would do. I would assume that in Tokiomi's mind, just getting the offer from another one of the big 3 mage families to adopt Sakura was enough assurance that she would be raised in a "noble" magic household.

Oscar Medina

Something about Mage Sealing and Sakura. One of Tokiomi's fears is that if he couldn't secure a mage house to take her in as the new head she would be targeted by the Mage Association for Sealing because she's a prodigy.

Incroyable épisode et incroyable réaction vous êtes géniaux, Kiritsugu quel personnage

Kindyh Bordat

Man that last episode was painful, i couldn’t even look at the screen when he screamed after killing his mother... I felt it into my guts.

Kindyh Bordat

Well with the number there is only one place long and big enough...

Anima

The root gives you true Magic (what They use is mage craft Not real Magic)

Great reaction! Always love to hear you guys discusstion. There is a mini show called 'Please, Einzbern consult room' that explains alot about the lore of the show and answers a few questions you have. Its something like 're zero break time' from 're zero'. Definitely recommend you to watch this. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL80ciO1BxudEylE8-seh305ShRONaAA6n&si=j5MI9n354VNeT48O Here is a youtube link of the episodes. Recommend you to watch this after you finish the show.

About the vetting: a mage will never tell another mage their secrets, also there's really no other options, there is no "following up". So, Tokiomi still had 0 choice in the matter (as a mage, not as a father - he could of course forego magehood but that would turn the balance on its head, power vacuum and stuff). It's also all to prevent her from becoming a living lab rat under the Mage Association - which will be even more gruesome than what she's going through now I promise LOL, let alone getting sealed. In contrast Kiri's dad is the 'evil' side of that same coin. Not a good guy, but not quite a bad guy either imo. Just... stuck in between being an emotional human and a generational mage. Just some extra info - your opinion is entirely yours to have :p Also, Kirei and Kiritsugu don't look alike at all to me , that confuses me the most of all hahaha And yes, Kiritsugu is a hell of a character. Fate, and all related, are some of the best stories in the world and you won't change my mind. Nasu's a genius and so are the collaborators.

YESS PLEASE 🙏🙏🙏

Fun Fact: Although there's not an official statement from the author, the place where Kiritsugu and Shirley childhood place is from the Philippines, with the alimango island ( alimango in english term "crab") a clue to where they are. Episode 19 aired on Mother's Day :D

Ale

I’m so excited for the last two episodes. Just solidifies fate zero as one of the best animes

DocGreen

This episode really makes me want a tsukihime anime remake. For those who don't know it's another story in the same multiverse called the nasuverse except it's an alternate timeline and in that it's more about dead apostles and vampires instead of holy grail wars.

Runhua Tang

“Would he have done it if 50% of the passenger lived?” Steph probably didn't realize how relavent this question will be.

Zen

Absolutely love your reaction and analysis of Kiritsugu's character! Can't wait for Stay Night, Grand Order, and Strange Fake! Oh yeah, you can also watch the 2nd OP & ED next episode.

James Shaw

Interesting detail in episode 1, Kirei and Tokiomi when going through Kiritsugu’s profile mention that his method of assassination included sniping, poisoning and taking down an entire jetliner to get to his target. What you’ve seen was the circumstances that led to the last one. Totally recontextualize Kiritsugu’s motives yet it was an accurate assessment of his character based on the results.

MikiMiki

Episode 19 aired in Japan on May 12, 2012, Mother's Day, a funny coincidence

Super Gamer Q

The death of a mother on Mother's Day is wild, reminds me of another coincidence but it could be spoilers for another show

Fabien

I don't think Tsukihime is another timeline: afaik it's the same universe, that's the Nasuverse. Alternate stuff will be made later. Or were made earlier, since the original story from Nasu which was his base to create Tsukihime, and named Kara no Kyoukai (there are animated movies about it), is considered a parallel universe. That being said, Tsukihime like Fate/stay night is a visual novel with parallel routes (the only difference with F/sn is that in Tsukhime the order isn't important and no route is considered the "final" one). So you could call those routes parallel stories too, independantly from the parallel universes in some fate spin-offs or in Kara no Kyoukai.

DocGreen

Will I say alternate timelines because to users if the mystic eyes of death can't exist at the same time logically. So either one is cannon to fate stay night or none of them are. And the sister did show up at the end of heavens field so I took that as tsukihime is the alternate timeline/universe

Hey buddy, I don't know who you are, but you're spoiling quite a bit of what's going to happen next, you should delete your comment and try to be a little more civilized next time

The writer who wrote this Fate entry is Urobuchi. There are a handful of writers whose names are known in the anime community, and he's one of them. His strong point lies in thematic and philosophical writing as can be seen in Fate/Zero. His other two famous works are Psycho Pass (dystopian sci-fi police state) and Madoka Magica (magical girl genre).

Ethereal

Just watched the first one, it's quite informative. I recommend. There are 6 in total. To watch them simultaneously with the show, do so every 4 episodes. Since you just finished watching episode 19, the first four should be okay to watch.

Super Gamer Q

He loves darker stories that's for sure

kipp3 3

1:05:08 No you're definitely not ruining anything, it's very interesting what you both have to say/think

rryutie

Loved everything here, the reaction, the discussion. SO good. Patricide is such a heavy theme, and wes I love how you phrased it "the show is deeply philosophical but doesn't express it through exposition" 46:36 the "one generation and you're back in the same cycle" is what ive always thought about in the context of death note. it's so weird to me how light is written to be smart to the point of being a genius, but never considered that in 2 or 3 generations after his death, everything would just go back to how it was. 1:02:05 i hadnt seen F/Z in a while so this hit me hard too.

FUN FACT: Ghouls and Dead Apostles are actually the "specialty" and main storyline of the Tsukihime branch (which is an anime that shares the same universe with Fate, even though I said it's an anime, but please don't watch the anime version.), not of Fate—where people usually talk about the Holy Grail, Servants, and mages. The frequent appearance of ghouls in Kiritsugu's past is a deliberate "crossover" by the author. The ghoul/dead apostle represents the concept of "irredeemable," meaning that once a person has become this kind of monster, there is no other way than to eradicate it completely. Author Gen borrowed this "monster type" from Tsukihime to completely break Kiritsugu's psyche, using it as the ultimate weapon to suppress compassion. It forces Kiritsugu to choose the cruelest option: "genocide to save the world," and this method gradually becomes a part of his personality.

Suddenly Fate becomes something from Resident Evil.
