On the debate of why school teach you things you don't need at your job. My opinion is that you learn calculus, history and in some country even more niche stuff (I'm in France and we have phisolophy in high school) because your job doesn't define you. At the end of the day, a job is a mean to earn a living, but to grow as a person and to understand the world, we need to learn those "not useful" stuff.

Solar Wind

Bakugo, Todoroki and Inasa did pass the pure combat part of the exam, they only failed the rescue part, so it makes sense they'd put them through some people skills training lol

starrk

Bakugo aced that training. From the start he understood what went wrong with these children, and it was his idea to make a quirk demontration that would "wow" the kids without embarassing them. And he personally gave a heart to heart talk/advice to the boss kid. They really highlighted Bakugo's intelligence (that's not combat related) in that training session. Most people have wrong perception of bakugo just because he is always shouting and not showing his true emotions all the time.

I (respectfully) disagree with Stephanie here. I agree with the classical purpose of education - to form knowledgeable and moral men and women. I disagree with the idea that education is supposed to prepare you for a job - although obviously it has turned into this over the past 100 years. Calculus is a foundational aspect of mathematics. Not saying everyone should have to take it but everyone should have access to before college. On a personal note - I had wanted to be a mathematician all my life and calculus was the first class that made me realize the field was not right for me. I switched to a different STEM focus and I’m so glad that I did.

Molly

cute (at the end...) kid episode and an episode with my favourite character is a fun combo!!

IzVito

I think learning complex subjects like calculus isn't just about the math, it's about training your brain. By tackling difficult concepts now, you are building the ultimate lifelong skill: knowing how to learn. Mastering hard topics today makes learning important things later in life much easier.

endeavor reminds me of a question... what is better? the person that always chose the good? or the person that got tempted and fell to evil but overcame it to be good? you have to remember... if you work and work and work for your goal, always by choosing the good option, but you notice that you will never attain your goal that way... alot of people would either give up or choose an "evil" option, but no matter the outcome, the people that continue to do good to get better will always be in the minority

starrk

Endeavor was a bad father and husband but he's not "evil" in the sense that he's a villain with evil plans. He really is a hero that wants to save people. Just wanna clarify that lol.

Sa_ji

Endeavour is one of my favorite characters in any anime. And you are right he is more like Batman. More you know him, you will understand more.

domi

About Endeavor, I think hes always know why All Might was the n°1 and why he could'nt climb that mountain, that he lacks that charisma and people skills, which is not to say that he cannot be professional, but hes not nice and happy like AM. But he wanted that spot despite that, he wanted to be the n°1 with just his strength, bc it would show just how much strength he has that it would be enough to surpass Him. The thing abt university (proffesional) is that it not only prepares u to do a job, but also to think abt what u are doing, the whys and hows, to have the ability to analyze and reflect on new information based on what you have learned; vs trade school (technical) it just teaches how to do stuff. The proffesional is supposed to supervise the process on top of being able to do it, while the technician just does it. Thats how I've always seen it, at least, so the reason they have u do so much "unncesary" work at school and uni is to teach ur brain how to learn new things and be more moldeable than it is abt what exactly u are learning. Though my career is very hands on, so at uni I did a lot of practical stuff on top of the abstract lol, so it probably depends on each.

MHA is pretty good about giving breaks - feel like if you look back at the arcs until now it pretty much swaps back and forth between darker-ish villain related arcs & light hearted school / training arcs. On the subject of school… I took 2 years of calculus & differential equations when I got my associate’s degree in engineering. Had to study like never before in a lot of those engineering classes. Then swapped majors when getting my Bachelor’s. Got a job in the field I swapped to, so haven’t used calculus in a long while… if you quizzed me on it now I’d definitely fail w/o some kind of refresher. Does feel a bit like wasted time in a way. 😭

Zachary Fewins

Man, calculus 2 is NOT making me grow as a person. What it is making me is more willing to cheat. And I have to pay for it! Not useful for my degree.

britt m

I think Stephanie's point was that you could still learn difficult concepts but have it be relevant to your major. Or have it be a more generalized skill. Like finances for example. In depth financial lessons would be a more reasonable skill to learn than differential equations because it will benefit everyone. Another example would be health and nutrition. These subjects can get complicated as well.

vivaan

why are the npcs in the comments justifying the education system lol how did rockefeller do this

Keshav Krishnakumar

it does make you grow as a person though. you learn good studying habits and time management skills from taking difficult classes. if it's "making" you cheat it's more of a reflection of your own character. not everyone is like that

Billbob

The quirk singularity stuff is kinda crazy, just really wish the series went into it further. But the idea of quirks basically being hyper-evolving by being mixed and passed on to the generation really sets things up to the point where they might just be a few more generations away from elementary schoolers with the power to wipe out whole areas. Already have people like Eri and Shigaraki who as children caused collateral damage to those around them, so its only going to get worse from here on out

Billbob

Finances maybe but youd have to go into some very specific examples and use cases to get anywhere close to the point of complexity as calculus or linear algebra. Whereas high level math in university is just an easy way to have one collection of courses for all students to take so they can gain some more experience with sequential problem solving that requires upfront knowledge of formulas and when to apply them as well as rigorous attention/focus while working as to not mess up any step and get a wrong final answer. The whole "well-rounded student" goal that universities follow can be debateable, but at minimum all high schoolers should at least attempt to have some competency at such strict objective problem solving before they surrender their thinking skills to AI queries..

Shay

He is *nothing * like Batman, idk what version of Bruce you have in your head, but Endeavor is definitely not like Bruce

AirCord

I took things like Trig and AP Calc in HS but I believe only up to Algebra 2 was required. My Algebra teacher would answer the question of "Why learn this if I'm not gonna use it ever again?" by saying learning Algebra is not just for the math, it's for learning the process of breaking down a problem and solving it through logical steps and that process can be applied to many things in life down the road. I watched a vid from Hank Green titled "No Effort is Wasted" and I think it's a great vid on this exact topic!

Renden

I agree with this comment, but please be careful when talking about certain character's backstories that haven't been revealed yet. You were vague, so it's fine, but something you said has not been seen so far in W&S's reaction.

Billbob

? Probably seems vague because I'm not sure who you are referring to either, I stopped following mha at the end of this season back when it was airing lol But Eri and Shigaraki serve as sort of parallels as people who were just too strong for society and had to be taken in by villains as children after being seemingly abandoned, just is that one was picked up by old school villains and the other by new villains. And while the former group only cared to use Eri for her strength for their own goals without ever helping her learn to control her power, the latter instead offered shigaraki his protection and mentorship since he seemed to blame society for shigaraki being cast out and free for the taking. So these are the two bad pathways that future generation kids might face if they dont grow up like bakugo did with a positive role model and general support+protection

Atika Fairuz

Bakugo is nothing like endeavor. Bc endeavor is an abuser!! He abused his kids and wife and nothing erases that . Him trying to do better can never erase it him being a good hero also doesn't make up

britt m

I truly do not think problem solving in the mathematical sense benefits the general population. To me, thats just busy work. I understand that its testing your ability to focus on a specific problem and follow specific steps, but there are other ways to develop those skills that don't involve mindless robotic equation solving. Your argument is that learning finances or health/nutrition wont ever reach the complexities that math would, but my answer to that is so freaking what?! Just because its a difficult subject, doesn't mean it is useful or beneficial. I am 28 years old and I cannot think of a single instance in my life where learning calculus has benefitted me in terms of problem solving. It quite literally is a useless skill to most of us. I would MUCH rather people focus on developing critical thinking skills, as this is what the general populace lacks imo.

RCG

Bakugo isn't as horrible as Endeavor, sure but honestly, they are the most similar in attitude and personality. Out of the whole class, he resembles Endeavor the most. The comparison also falls a bit short since one is still a kid while the other is a grown man. I think you could argue both ways about which one is worse. A grown adult should probably have a better grasp on controlling himself, while you could make excuses for a kid/teen by saying they're just not mature enough yet or are going through a weird phase of their life. But to be fair, Bakugo isn't even in the position, nor does he have the ability, to be as horrible as Endeavor. Bakugo bullied Deku for years and years and even told him to kill himself. Now that they are together at UA, he is also often stopped by the teachers when he goes overboard. In contrast, nobody is there to stop someone like Endeavor. Honestly, if Bakugo doesn't change, he could end up like Endeavor as an adult. I even agree that nothing will change Endeavor's past but at the same time, people can change and it's up to the ones who were hurt to decide whether they want to give them a second chance.

RCG

If I had to guess, the comparison comes from the fact that Batman is more of a "dark hero" type, while All Might would probably be compared to Superman as the epitome of strength and goodness.

RCG

Since Eri was the only other person you mentioned and we just learned her backstory this season, he obviously means Shigaraki. We don't know what he did/happened to him as a child yet. :)

Arvrxx

Did my Calculus 2 Exam yesterday. I'm so happy that I don't have to do it again!

carocatowr

Endeavor is such a complex character, dont get me wrong he is a terrible father and an abuser and he should be in jail, but as a hero I dont think hes bad at all, at the end of the day he is doing what he believes is better and what would lead to a better future he just choose a different way than All might and I think they are both as valid. Also, I really like how in these episodes you can see how much it affects the society the changes in the hero dynamic, not quirks but heroes, that is a huge part of the story

Billbob

Feel like we have basically have the same amount of minimal info about both of their origins but I assume Shigaraki gets more because he is the more important character or maybe since hes older theyll go into his teen years too? Idk I just hope they explain wtf is with his choice of outfit and that'll be enough for me, feel like that got brushed aside a bit after AFO got captured

Shay

I guess, but their personalities are not even remotely alike, so it just doesn't make sense to me to compare them (also, Batman is not a "dark hero" just because his villains are more twisted. Batman may have a dark colored aesthetic but he's still supposed to be a hopeful and optimistic person, he's best friends with Superman and Wonder Woman for a reason)

Renden

You know what, if you got all that information just based on the previous season's info, then fair enough. There's a big backstory drop for Shigaraki coming in a later season that I thought you were referring to. My bad.

Billbob

Weird, all good then. I dont think its surprising for the main big bad to get even more fleshed out but I kinda figured we got all we needed to know already. Other than again that whole hand obsession/safety blanket thing he had going on at the start which seems to have been dropped kinda?

Kindyh Bordat

Well I'm pretty sure 80% of the population cheated at least one math test a year.

starrk

Bakugo and Endeavor are nothing alike. Bakugo bullied Deku when they were kids yes, and he was insecure towards Deku in the earlier seasons, but nothing in his attitude indicates that he will be a wife beater and a bad father. And it's NOT true that the teachers are just stopping Bakugo from doing bad things cause in the first place he'll never do anything bad that will actually hurt his classmates or anyone around him. Also wtf with the "if bakugo doesn't change" there's nothing wrong with him now. You're making it seem like Endeavor is a violent dude that hurts anyone and Bakugo is the same when both are not true. Your analysis of Bakugo's character is wayy off.

Atika Fairuz

Even if bakugo were given that power he still wouldn't be like endeavor bc bakugo is very emotional and he's rude and straightforward most he'd do would be extremely competitive and yelling . Endeavor isn't a yeller nor does he show emotions like bakugo does he acts nonchalant and cold outside and AT HOME he's abusive that noone knows outside his family. Whereas everyone knows how bakugos personality is unlike endeavor. As a kid bakugo made himself better whereas it took endeavor's old ass years. So I'll never support the comparison. Middle school bakugo was a bully yes I'm not making him excuses but he was never endeavor

Episode 17 foreshadowing aoyama

Holy Arathi

Yeah I think it’s fine teaching kids the basic stuff. Like up to middle school level, but advanced anything doesn’t make sense for a high schooler. I look at it like teach them the basics of English, math, social studies, history and all that stuff to see what interests who and then go from there. If you wanna be an engineer or get into astronomy then sure learn calculus but algebra 1 maybe 2 is more than enough. Ok comment over. This could legit be an hour long discussion or more.

Holy Arathi

I think Japan has it right to an extent. You apply for your high school based off what you want to do with yourself. Find a high school that excels in the classes and programs that will help you get to where you want to be. They don’t really do that as much in America. If you really want to be advanced then you skip a few grades and go to college early. But colleges don’t teach you shit about what certain jobs actually do, they just have you pass the classes then kind of expect you to figure it out, which is good to an extent, but at 18-21 figuring it all out on top of your classes and social life and anything else you might do is to much. I think at least. That’s something they desperately need in America are classes to teach you how to navigate basic shit. Like taxes, insurance companies how does this damn college website work and how do I apply for grants or loans accurately and know exactly what I’m getting myself into. Those are things I wish I would’ve known prior to college. You graduate high school, they wash their hands of you and just kind of expect you to just do it. Wait, hold up, how do I fill out college apps, what about transportation am I gonna be in dorms or commute. What about a job to help with tuition? Sure have the parents help, but what if neither of your parents went to college or even if they did the process is so much more different now they may not even be much help. -TLDR- High schools could do so much more to help students figure this stuff out before throwing them to the wolves.

Chideraa Udegbulem

In my opinion Endeavor abused his family to get the ultimate kid and then when he got it started trying to fix his relationship with said kid because his abuse ruined it. To me at least this shows no actual care or accountability for the things he has done because he’s still trying to get the ending he wanted when she started all this.

starrk

Bro don't give any hint about future episodes not yet seen. Even vague hints.

Zachary Fewins

I’m not cheating, I’m saying I feel more like cheating than ever. The issue is that I can pass easy without proper studying patterns, but I find the subject useless, complex, and draining. I don’t like it but it isn’t actually that hard. A class like digital logic design did way more to give me proper habits cause of the prof and actually applies to my interests in technology, and to my degree!

Zachary Fewins

Honestly I would love to have been required to take philosophy and im fine with history and language arts to some extent(don’t really get the point of essay writing unless you’re going into academia though) but advanced mathematics is the most random thing to decide that everyone needs to know… history and philosophy are good character building things to know, and I think literacy and communication skills are very important. Nothing about advanced mathematics is particularly useful to anyone who isn’t an engineer or scientist. I’m going into computer science, I don’t need to know how to get the volume of a rotation using the cylindrical shells method.

Collin Gifford

Well no, Steph, college is not there to prepare you for a job. That's why the degrees are academic fields and not jobs.
