Oscar Medina

For context, something that's kinda handwaved in the extra material is that that in the first three Holy Grail Wars they didn't even got close to manifesting the cup (the actual wish granting Grail not the physical cup).

The Anime Dude

Interesting discussion midway through episode 1! As someone raised Christian myself - found myself agreeing with you two a lot, the pursuit of a Utopia is often so disastrous because it would have to disregard human nature or free will. Also think it’s smart not to see the “Holy Grail” as some relic related to Jesus or Christianity or as inherently good. We know that there’s only been a handful of grail wars, and it was stated that the 3 founding families started them - so basically this whole thing is just some cultic ritual in the far east that those mage families think is the key to getting to the root of magic. We’ve constantly seen “rules” that were set up early get broken over and over in this chaotic mess of a war, so I think skepticism is more than warranted, haha. I don’t think anyone’s wish was truly granted in a traditional sense, the grail was corrupt & caused a lot of collateral destruction when it was destroyed - but there’s irony in Kirei & Gilgamesh overlooking it & equating it to “this must’ve been what you wished for then”, so I could be wrong - but I think there’s a lot that’s kind of open to interpretation there. P.S. so you know how many stories have a tragic backstory? This is a prequel that is that tragic back story, and I’d argue that aside from waver it was tragic for all parties involved… a writer I really enjoy (that always writes depressing stuff) wrote the original novels knowing that their ending had to be depressing as heck in order to align with what comes after. 😓 Fate Zero is my favorite Fate, but can’t wait for more all the same!

Nody

Can't wait for unlimited blade work!

Oscar Medina

Another clarification that got mentioned to Gilgamesh in a previous episode. The Wish granting Grail is bait for Masters and Servants. The three mage families are interested in filling with all seven servants to make a hole to the root.

Dank Waifu

This is a prequel, that's why you felt like the ending was sad and unfulfilling lol.

Mats Erik

I still personally think Kiritsugu was wrong and kind lazy in his pursuit of his ideals. He basically just killed his way down his path and sought out a magical item to shunt off the responsibility of his innability to achieve his goal onto. Even in the event that the Grail is good, but with the same restrictions, he still wouldnt have achieved his goal because he is the kind of person he would have eradicated from his ideal world. Even if it was good, all the bloodshed he'd have cause would still have been meaningless. He just slaughtered his way toward utopia and when that somehow didnt work, he resorted to begging a higher power for help, rather than changing his outlook. I understand why, given his life, but I still dont think he was right in his action except at the very end when he actually changed.

Roy Mathew

Don’t want to say anything to avoid spoiler but just know a lot of your questions will get answered in Fate Stay Night - which was actually the original fate story before they made fate zero as a prequel.

humphrey-t-humphrington

Make sure to watch episode 0 of fate/ubw before episode 1 , and Angra is from Zoroastrianism

Raymond Throne

Honestly I think the most confusing part of the Grail Wars in the anime is actual anatomy of the grail. The grail is split into three parts that make a single whole: the Lesser Grail, which is the physical form of the grail that ties the ritual together and consumes the souls of the Servants; the Greater Grail, which is a magical system created by the Fuyuki ley lines that grants Command Spells, allows the Servants to be summoned, and can grant a wish by connecting someone to the Root once the Lesser Grail is filled and catalyzed; and the Spirit of the Grail, which is the will that dwells within the Greater Grail that desires to be born and takes the form of humanity's sins. For the Holy Grail to succeed, the Lesser Grail must be filled with 7 souls of Heroic Spirits to substantiate the Greater Grail, which will be used by the Spirit to birth itself and manifest the wish of the victor in a way that the Spirit believes is appropriate.

Oscar Medina

To be fair these are concepts that are only properly when you have two games that have over 100 hours of reading and the novel Zero was based on. If the anime Zero stooped to explain the Grail fully it would both spoil a large part of Heaven's Feel conflict and just drag the pace. Hell, some of the explanations of the Grail are in the Fate extra material where Nasu did a QnA for the special edition of FSN (a large box that only release after the game was already famous).

TPB TPB

To give some more context, its a prequel for Fate Stay/Night but it was written after FSN was made. Also, Angra Mainyu cursed Kiritsugu (as was shown) and he was slowly dying. He actually dies in that scene where he passes on his dream to Shirou.

Hassan Jameel

this series plays alot with thge idea of different characters having seperate bits of information regarding the same things. for example, only kiritsugu and kirei really know what the grail is like, based on the other masters conduct. its unclear how much the einzberns know about angra mainyu so far, since they do prepare the grail vessels (homunculi). but safe to assume the church and mages association dont know anything beyond the basic concept.

VoxellOT

As for the "who really won the grail" question, id say it would be Kiritsugu since the grail picked him to make a wish. It picked Kiritsugu because as you saw, the grail is a bit malevolent, and it was able to twist Kiritsugu's wish to become something that could spread mass destruction. Once Kiritsugu rejected and destroyed the grail, it was pretty much over at that point. And with the grails vessel broken, it allowed its contents (the "mud") to spill and spread over the city. Then later, Gilgamesh telling Kirei: "you won the grail, this is what you've always wanted" is just Gilgamesh talking out of his ass to further enable Kirei into his insidious ways, providing him with more entertainment. Great reactions, looking forward to UBW and the 3 movies after.

KeanuofRivia

Angra Mainyu was the name fom before, it will come back later. The fanbase calls him Angry Mango lol

HopelesslyImmersed

The reason we wanted you to experience this first despite it being a very tragic prequel is to give you the context of the events set in motion and the lore. Now you're primed and ready for the events to come. You'll meet new characters, but also familiar faces. Kiritsugu is a very tragic character, but I feel theres more comfort watching his story now rather than after the events to come because you get to see how his actions and decisions shaped the story. (I would give more context but don't wanna spoil) As far as the series being connected its a bit convoluted, but Fate Zero + Fate UBW are directly tied then Fate Heaven's feel is a branch off of the UBW story. Fate Strange fake is not directly connected but takes place in the same world. I hope you'll consider watching it too. As far as the rest of the other Fates, I'm not too familiar but I'm sure others can specify. Glad you guys enjoyed it! Just know Zero's ending is unfulfilling by design. Looking foward to UBW!

VoxellOT

Just a heads up, a lot of your points are revealed in the Heavens Feel movies, so they could be considered spoilers

DocGreen

MAKE SURE YOU GUYS WATCH EPISODE 0 OF UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS FIRST NOT 1

Abdulrahman

Are we getting UBW next week?

Random

I am a little surprised that you both came to the same conclusion about the Christianity debate. You both got caught up in the Jesus' plan vs Lucifer's plan; the free will debate. But what about God's plan? That one seems much more of a practical Christian mindset. Although, nothing would change. People would live, they would die, they would be judged, the people that could live together forever without conflict would go to a utopia where they could live in peace. Kiritsugu's wish would already be in place, since Earthly life is a test and not the destination.

mimiyowa

I just finished Fate/Strange Fake yesterday, It's soo so good!!!! going to start reading the LNs since the anime went too fast. I feel like they did the "american holy grail war" really well. I also felt super rewarded for watching (and rewatching) Fate/Zero.

eXxCeZz

Next week is UBW episode 0? :D

eXxCeZz

Heavy spoilers lol

Runhua Tang

Don't worry nothing bad will happen to Rin or Sakura or Ilya or Shiro in Fate Stay Night :D

mimiyowa

Wes' comment about Arturia's wish being really selfish is spot on ! Also, for additional context, in Zoroastrian mythology, Angra Mainyu is the literal embodiment of "All the World's Evils." As the eternal adversary to the supreme creator god, he is not just a malicious figure, but the primordial source of all sin, death, suffering, and curses. He represents absolute cosmic corruption, existing solely to pollute, destroy, and oppose everything good in the universe.

Vequoin

lots of spoilers of Heaven's feel . don't read this comment .

mimiyowa

Whenever I watch this ending I think back to what Lancer said before he died, when he was forced to stab himself in the middle of a duel: "You want to win... You want to win so desperately?! You desire the Grail so desperately?! You've crushed the only wish I held in my heart... Do none of you feel any shame at all?! I won't forgive you... I won't forgive any of you! You monsters, who'd disregard a knight's honor for personal gain... Let my blood taint your dreams! Let the Grail be cursed! Let the wish it grants bring disaster! And when you fall into the pits of hell... remember the rage of Diarmuid!"

Infinite Winds

I don't know how its gonna be catalogued on whichever site you'll watch it on but Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works has a double length prologue episode, so be sure you're watching that next week, it has a runtime of 50 minutes (Rounding only to the minute) so you should know from that you're watching the right thing. Also some people are posting big spoilers in the comments, so beware those.

Raymond Throne

To be fair, the Grail ritual being complicated and byzantine with moving parts that other people only dimly understand is part and parcel of it essentially being a shell game played by the Three Families to prey on magical families dumb and desperate enough to get involved without being in on the ground floor. Most of the participants in the Grail War also don't understand the Grail War. Narratively, I think it only becomes a bit of problem here, where we have the end form of the Grail appear and it becomes a bit confusing what's literally happening. That said, I'll freely admit the actual plot details are really secondary to the imagery and thematic conclusion of Fate Zero, so it only really matters to the super nerdy invested people.

Vequoin

Fate/Stay Night was a Visual Novel that first came out which started the Fate universe or franchise. Fate/Zero is a prequel to Fate/Stay Night. Now, few things you should know: 1) Fate/Stay has three routes, they unlock after you beat the previous route. 2) Unlimited Blade Works covers the second route of Fate/Stay Night . Each route is a completely different story focusing on different characters/Story. 3) The first route is Fate route which was the basis of the old Fate/Stay night anime which aired in 2006. We do not talk about this anime because it was trash. So , nobody remembers it or watches it. i have watched it lol. 4) The Fate route is about Saber, so the rest of the routes do not go into Saber's backround or her life. You might even think the Saber from UBW is not the Saber here, but this is by design/plot. 5) I wanted to tell you this because Saber or Artoria is Fate's Mascot, and arguably their most important character. This is why Fate Go always updates her kit and keeps her as an S tier servant, because she is Saber. 6) Fate/Stay also has a secret route , or last route after all the 3 routes are completed, and it is also about Artoria(Saber). These are not spoilers since you will not know about these things in the animes

Cong Hui

Really kind of a shame that the Fate route won't be explored at all. UFOTable, redo Fate route!

Leandro Calderón

Please make sure to watch Episode 0 of UBW, great reaction.

Zen

Thank you for the episode, this was a great reaction! Yeah, Fate really doesn't hold back in its writing; it doesn't care to hand-hold you and instead trust that you'll put the pieces together yourself. But once you do, it really does pay off massively. Oh yeah, don't forget to start with UBW with the episode 0: https://animepahe.pw/play/e432bb71-4238-0a7d-5ab4-deabdc494974/128cd900833520996c49f72f854c5077d626e401f1f96f0e20088c209823bc0b You can keep using ReAnime since it also have the Blueray for UBW, Heaven's Feel, Grand Order, and Strange Fake.

David Stern

Great reaction! Also, what servants are you guys hoping or expecting to see in the next series? I would love to hear you guys talk about this prior to starting the fate stay night reaction. Also btw, Kirei had a wife, but I don’t believe they ever said he had kids.

The Anime Dude

Oh yea, for Unlimited Blade Works - there’s an Episode 0 that’s important to watch! Don’t skip it! Haha.

Fabien

I'm not religious, but personally my perspective would be that a world without conflicts would require more than just to rewrite human nature, you would need to rewrite nature itself. Lifeforms have struggled and fought to colonize ressources for as long as life existed. Even proper "wars" have been witnessed between other primates, the only difference between this and a normal conflict is the level of organization after all.

Kindyh Bordat

I can't wait for Fate stay night.

Kindyh Bordat

Kiritsugu spend years trying to reach his daughter, but the Grail mud basically cursed him. His body and magic where rapidly failing and he didn't have enough strength to break the barrier. It's so fucking sad, and it will probably get sadder in stay night...

Fabien

32:00 You'll never really have a clear answer in the animes afaik, but just know that there IS an answer. Especially, what Wes is saying "[...] and if so how did they manage to make their wishes without this malevolent entity [...]". Something happened in the past. 49:18 You probably shouldn't take too literally what some characters are saying, sometimes they're just guessing what happened. Gilgamesh is just saying what he thinks happened, but personally I don't think anyone won that grail war. 57:23 "how is this the final episode, I don't understand" It's what we've been saying since the beginning, it's a prequel. It introduced characters you were sometimes supposed to know, and a story you were only vaguely told about in the original story (Fate/stay night). In particular, zero could be seen as the genesis of Kirei as a vilain. It was never supposed to have a real conclusion. It was the set up for the situation you're in in Fate/stay night, where everything began narratively.

Oscar Medina

Well, later on there is an expansion on that lore, but appart for the détails relevant to Heaven's Feel and Apocrypha, the rest of the information is people asking Nasu and he answering with his answers being written down on special editions of his games and animes. I have the special editions of the movies and he answers paragraphs of scenarios on those.

cgaming mouakoumbah

Thanks for the reaction! Well worth the wait. Going forwards just remember to keep in mind the plot points and themes being developed throughout the series so far - and don't forget to watch fate stay night ubq episode 0 before episode 1!

Ralph

Now it’s time for Fate Stay Night UBW!

mimiyowa

Very good comment, but the parts about that particular servant should probably be removed until they watch the first episode(s) of Fate/Stay Night... you're kinda revealing which servant gets summoned here (light spoilers, although probably also in the cover)

Hayate

"We do not talk about this anime because it was trash". That's just your headcanon. Fate/Stay Night 2006 was the 32th best selling anime between 2000 and 2014 in DVD and BluRay sales. It's was good, just not as good as the UBW adaptation. It's worth watching, but Wes&Steph audience is mostly young anime fan who didn't even watch the 2006 version and just think it's trash (like you do) so it didn't win the watch order poll.

Linus Pettersson

Awesome reaction and discussion. Great that you keep using a player that shows the bluray since the next fate entries have lots of cut content, even more so than Fate/Zero. And episode 0 and episode 1 (so the first 2 episodes) of "fate/stay night unlimited blade works" is around 45-50 minutes and only sometime is ep 0 - the prologue (first episode to watch) included in the list of episodes when you search for fate/stay night unlimited blade works". But to easily check and be sure is to see if the first 2 episodes are both around 45-50 minutes, then the prologue is included as the first. Otherwise if ONLY the first episode in the list is around 50 minutes and the next is around 26 minutes then they don't have the prologue and you just have to search "fate/stay night unlimited blade works Prologue" and you will get it. But if you have trouble I can link a site that have the prologue seperately https://animepahe.pw/anime/e432bb71-4238-0a7d-5ab4-deabdc494974

Ryne

I'm so looking forward to seeing how y'all take to Unlimited Blade works. Zero is good, but it doesn't come anywhere near UBW for me.

Temojikato

What, you expected a happy ending? That's not the kinda world we live in, unfortunately. ;) Please don't stop here though :D GO: Babylon has a lot of Gilgamesh explainers if you ever get there :p I'm still sad we're skipping og Deen :< Nasu's universe is the best thing that happened to storytelling, more is always better

Fabien

It's surprising, because as an avid Fate/stay night enjoyer, I still think Fate/zero is the best anime adaptation. I think Fate/stay night really shines in the visual novel, where you do the 3 routes in order (fate, then UBW, then Heaven's Feel) with each route preparing for the next and each revelation in each route giving more clues to what was going on since the very start. Narratively, the genius of F/sn was really how those 3 routes completed each other. Thus, I can't really rate one route separately, I always see F/sn as a single story. Just like zero is.

Ryne

Good for you.

pylonsf4

I'd consider the second part of your comment a spoiler by the way. Even if it's revealed early in FSN

pylonsf4

I'd consider naming artoria here a spoiler as well

Omer Durrani

Such amazing weeks leading up to the completion of Fate Zero with your reactions! Onto Unlimited Blade Works and we start with episode 0 Next week cant come soon enough!! Thank you for everything!!!

Vequoin

I watched the show a long time ago but it was nothing like the visual novel. It is easy to assume otherwise. I have seen nearly lost of fate stuff expect carnival phantasm and illya magical girl series

brde

the story will continue at fate UBW and fate heavens feel.

V

You have to watch unlimited blade works after this

Matthew Wise

Thanks for giving thought to my question, appreciated the answer. I was thinking of asking it for a while and I knew this episode would make the question redundant haha. The only thing i'd add though is if it's a change in human nature is it really an obstruction of free will? If instead of feeling an outburst of violent rage in response to something that offends you, that you were instead inclined to resolve the matter with words, or simply move on, you have the free will to determine the specifics, just not the inclination towards violence. But of course, that was never really an option here. I'll answer some of your questions in safe way. The grail is never explained in the anime, and whilst in my opinion you should just be given that explanation, because some are against it I won't do that. Instead i'll give you some safe pieces that you can use to help you get there. Mythological Angra Mainyu: It comes from Zoroastrianism, and (with a lot of asterisks) could be considered an older concept of 'the devil', the enemy of god. It is the spirit of evil and polar opposite of 'Spenta Mainyu' the spirit of goodness which maps somewhat to the Abrahamic holy spirit. The Fate interpretation of this is heavily distorted, similar to how characters like Artoria being very different to our expectations to highlight a specific interpretation of their character, ideal or story. Has the grail been won before? No. Something has always gone wrong. The first war was flawed because they couldn't control the spirits and had no means of accessing it. The second one failed because everyone focused on assassinating masters so the grail never filled. The third is unclear on specifics, but essentially thats when the corruption happened and Angra Mainyu entered it. Fate Zero was the 4th war. Why did Kiritsugu win? What happened with Kirei? They both reached the grail at the same time, kiritsugu meets the definition of an 'anti-hero' which would be Angra Mainyu's class. He was the preferred vessel. Kirei was chosen mostly out of spite against kiritsugu for rejecting the grail. The end was a partially realised grail. I noted Pandora's box is quite a good way to think about it. I think i can also say that the Holy Grail is *supposed* to (pre 4th war) only be able to summon good heroes (who are less than 100% divine), since the end of the 3rd war the limiter on goodness has been removed. I won't explain more on gilgamesh, except to say his morality is highly centred on what people and things are worth. Within all that I think you have a lot of tools to get to the bottom of most of it. I think you were right at the end, it really doesn't hold your hand, partially because it had such a massive visual novel following that the producers didn't really feel the need. Thanks for watching my fave show, looking forward to rewatching UBW with you guys, my fave Stay/Night Route.

Cong Hui

Definitely major spoiler, avoid

Zak

so yeah, killing illya and co in the grail was symbolic of him choosing to never be able to see his daughter again, it's kind of the ultimate tragedy.

Azer S

Easy: I wish every time someone kill another, or order to kill another he dies too. Good old MAD

Azer S

The grail isn’t a demon. It’s basically a very powerful magic program that use servant energy to do whatever you want. Problem is at some point it got corrupted Also, yeah, it only grant you power to execute a plan. So you have to come with an actual plan. You can’t wish for something you don’t actually know how to get.

rryutie

The story & characters are not bad at all in the 2006 fate. It's the animation that doesn't hold up to present times, unfortunately. So it's hard to argue the "trash" label. Otherwise I agree with what you wrote.

Vequoin

I called it trash mostly as joke tbh but its faults are that it doesn’t just stick with the VN route of Fate. It loves to add things from other two routes as well. It doesn’t explain spend too much time on the protagonist too and has some bad dialogue choices like “People die when they are killed” . Also, it spoils a lot of stuff from the next two routes and adds a lot of its own version of stuff by taking from other routes. I watched that show long ago when I was a teen myself. I still remember a lot of stuff from it and a lot of forgettable stuff but ending was kinda sad haha. Doesn’t hold up to the VN and has changes from it but all good.

rryutie

It'd be pretty interesting to see UBW cause of how much you loved zero. Unlike most fate fans, I'm not a strong fan of UBW because of the protagonist and theme, but if it's you guys watching it, it will be an amazing journey to follow no matter what and I'd be there for it. This was an AMAZING reaction. I really don't believe there are any other reactor(s) that analyzed or caught as much info from F/Z as you both had and I saw so many reactions from all sorts of people & channels. Plus your genuine enjoyment of the show was so refreshing (i watch a lot of hype reactors and sometimes they just overdo it). The initial info dumps at the beginning overwhelmed A LOT of reactors, but from the start, you were both so perceptive and sharp. And lastly, there are so many lesser known (non mainstream) adult anime that I lament you two haven't and are unlikely to ever react to because they won't win polls. After seeing your reaction to a more adult themed anime like F/Z, it's a bittersweet feeling cause now I know the potential. Cannot wait to see more from you guys!

mimiyowa

I watched it back in the day, it was very mid. Although I prefer the art style of it (still shots look good but the CG dragon still haunts me with overlord sheep). I also generally dislike shirou and Fate/Stay Night as a whole.. if I had to guess why the fate/stay night blurays sold well I'd say it's probably because of the game?

HopelesslyImmersed

I mean its not that he chose not to see his daughter again. The grail presented him a choice, hapiness with his family or 7 billion lives. He started crying because deep in his soul the desire to be a hero was stronger, so he sacrificed that reality to save multiple others. He made the attempt to go rescue his daughter but he couldnt get past the Einzbern magic barriers so he had to give up. Focusing on raising Shirou

Azer S

So the lesser graal is the used interface, the spirit is the program and the greater is the juice?

NECOdes

Yeah FZ might feel unfufilling since it's just a prequel to the main series, Fate/stay Night. It technically meant to be watched after the main series. FZ and Stay Night are written by different authors, they focus on different stuff, so you will notice a difference in the story telling and characters when watching. Lot's your questions will be answered in Fate/stay Night: UBW (2014) and Fate/stay Night: Heaven's Feel, movies. Just make sure not to forget to watch the **Episode 0** (also called Prologue) of UBW.

William Evans

Fate/Zero is a top3anime for me. I go back and forth on Fate/Zero, Steins;Gate, and Code Geass. Please tell me you are watching Fate/Stay Night UBW next. Episode 0 to UBW is flawless and your eyes and faces will light up having watched Zero first. Keep up the amazing reactions!

Zak

he probably knew what the outcome would be if he failed, so it amounts to a choice

A M

It's such a crazy story that you can watch it all, go play Fate Stay Night and Hollow Ataraxia, come back to rewatch it and find new layers.

Woodstock179

Found your Fate zero on yt and binged it with my partner really great reactions. ^_^ had to join to catch UBW Zero was the first anime i got them hooked on when we started dating lol we called it our "trauma bonding " anime 😂 🫡😭 now you know why.

jom

It's not Kiritsugu's fault what happened with the grail at the end, I don't see why you would blame him specifically and tell him to give up and die. It's fked up ngl, he was just doing the right thing.

Demerit

If kiritsugu's ideal paradise was to be real, his universe would have been plucked ;)

NoSoupRice

what's up with this show and choking people?

TheEnd187

I feel like you should have watched the Studio Deen Fate before Zero

Sappy

This is why I don't want them to skip the original Stay/night. It's the one series where Saber is the center of the story, her story arc is fleshed out and she gets the closure she deserves. UBW is great but it's more about Shirou and Rin Tohsaka is the main heroine. It's really not doing Saber justice to skip stay night.

Kavry

I'm not surprised that you guys forgot this, considering it was all the way back in episode 1, but it was already explicitly stated that the grail in this war (and in all versions of fate from what I know) has no actual ties to the Christian grail in any way (outside of the name). That's why Kotomine Risei (Kirei's father) didn't mind cheating to win the grail for Tokiomi, so that no truly evil person could obtain it. If it truly was the Christian grail, he would've notified the higher ups in the church, and they would've ordered the executors of the church to retrieve it.
