Zachary Fewins

I know that it’s like, one of the big things the story has been building for, but the harem aspect of this story is my least favorite, and kinda gross imo. Still one of my favorite stories I’ve ever read cause of the world building and such. I just think it would’ve been a better story with only Sylphy or only Eris.

Zachary Fewins

I just looked back at the timeline and THAT episode has to be soon! I can’t wait!

HopelesslyImmersed

Its purposely meant to make you feel uncomfortable. Polygamy is looked down upon based on our morals and ethics, yet it still exists in society. I don't agree with it, but at least Rudeus legitimately cares for all of them. And he did reject Roxy, Roxy chose to be in this relationship and Sylphy unfortunately was exposed to polygamy as a kid so she is ok with it as well because Paul loved both Zenith and Lilia

Kindyh Bordat

Yeah same here, but sadly the story is build all around this... It will be cemented in the next big event.

Joshua Moore

I CANT WAIT for turning point 4

Kindyh Bordat

Damn I hate this episode... It's good and all but I can't watch him romantic with Roxy. SHE RAPED HIM, it is not normal to marry your rapist, even if she "Might be pregnant" (I still haven't forgiven Elinalise for that made up lie)

Temojikato

Except for maybe Frieren and some Ufotable (Fate) scenes, I do agree Mushoku Tensei is one of the best in art direction

Temojikato

If you think it'd have been a "better story" that way you are completely missing the point LOL

Zachary Fewins

What’s the point then? Embracing a sexual power fantasy?

Kindyh Bordat

Same, I wonder how they gonna direct it. I hope they don't say it's happening and we are put direct in it until the reveal at the end of the episode.

hws

yall can 100% watch the ending btw, at least this one, who knows if it changes over time though.

pylonsf4

I winced when Sylphie was asking Roxy about her night with rudy... Sometimes I feel like Wes and Steph are my straight-laced friends ive roped into watching way too degenerate stuff for them

Nimy

You can watch the ED the next time, there are no spillers in it.

The Anime Dude

People gotta remember that Mushoku Tensei is covering this dude’s life: all the ups and downs that come with it. so kinda like in S2… there’s a lot of slice of life elements. Some entire light novel volumes feel like they’re just slice of life whereas others don’t feel that way at all - I love the constant change of pace. 😂

Kindyh Bordat

Relatable feeling XD. And it was worst in the light novel, since Sylphie was breast feeding.

protra

Rudy is a special admissions student, the university wants the prestige of him as a talented mage graduating from there. Roxy has more than a decade of experience as a tutor and has previously graduated from Ranoa Academy so it makes sense for her to take on the instructor role. You should definitely check out the ED, it's great!

RCG

This show is actually so good in almost every other way, besides this weird stuff. I don't get it.

RCG

I don't get it either. The show is so good besides this stuff. I'm not even talking about the polygamy. All three of them are fine with it and can live their lives however they want, even though I'm sure it'll become a problem later on with Eris. But some of those scenes are just so unnecessary.

RCG

Pretty sure they noticed it :)

RCG

It’s not the polygamy, though; it’s certain scenes that are portrayed in a very specific way. Maybe it’s on purpose, I don’t know but in my opinion, they don’t add any value besides making it feel weird.

Jan Češka

Yeah, i love this show but some of the moments in this episode weird me out tbh

Oasis

In the novels, we kind of got Eris' POV over the course of a few chapters throughout the books. So we had one after Rudy had "broken up" with Sara, one after he married Sylphie etc. The anime just condensed it all into two episodes at the start of this season. Also, by the fantasy world's perspective, a couple kidnappers aren't that bad (even though it's completely awful for our world). It's not so detrimental. Sylphie is a very accepting wife. She kind of predicted Rudy's nature (by looking at Paul's behaviour) and had long accepted that he most likely wouldn't have only her as his wife. Polygamy is very common in this world as well as polyandry for nobles. It's not out of the norm. I guess both Sylphie and Roxy are just happy that Rudy is an attentive husband which is quite rare in the cases of polygamy. Sylphie also wants to keep the peace in the house which is why she's trying to start up conversations with Roxy by talking about the one thing they have in common - Rudy. Also, that massive armadillo looking creature that we saw Aisha with for a brief moment is Dillo (sometimes translated as Jirou). Rudy got him when they went to recue Zenith and decided to keep it as it would most likely die in the desert of Begaritt. The anime completely skipped over it.

HopelesslyImmersed

I don't know which scenes in particular you mean since you didn't provide an example, but gestures of love are received in a variety of ways. What seems awkward to someone may be perceived as a loving gesture to someone else. For example, that scene in the beginning with Roxy and Rudeus in bed. I found it awkward at first because im the third person in the room, but my girlfriend pointed out that waking up and lovingly glancing at your significant other is natural. Which is true

Keshav Krishnakumar

this show was weird from the start but it took such a weird turn bro i honestly dont know how it retains so many western fans. it clashes with western views at every opportunity

Billbob

Yeah idk, to me it is interesting that rudy's family ends up being an example of a rather healthy polygamous relationship where trust/love/communication between all partners is handled equally and worked through but idk if they'll show off the mini issues as much as they did in the novel. It might just be a bit too progressive for most people which causes knee jerk dismissals of "this is just wrong" or "author is just being a perv" especially since yeah everyone with relationship experience knows that its nearly impossible to actually have a healthy poly relationship like this when everyone is human. But I have one close friend who has been in a similar polyship for 8 years and she also appreciates this being handled well in the novel, so feels like its just people being quick to judge again since we all have lower expectations of Rudy due to knowing his internal dialogue being sometimes scheezy even though externally he is almost mr perfect. But the eventual 3rd everyone is expecting at this point... yeah that one might be the author's wishful thinking

Zachary Fewins

The problem is that power fantasy is at odds with serious and real storytelling. It’s almost like someone else entirely wrote the harem parts. Like maybe rifujin has a pervy polygamist alter ego that doesn’t know how to write influencing him subconsciously. I’ve read the whole story including extras, and it very easily could’ve been written without polygamy in it. I can’t say anything else about that because of spoilers, but it isn’t all that integral to the plot that Rudeus has multiple wives. It’s also completely unrealistic and immersion breaking how perfect his marriages are and how each wife accepts the others and shares. You can tell that it’s some kind of fantasy the author has because little if anything ever goes wrong, while polygamous relationships in real life are some of the most troubled relationships statistically.

Zachary Fewins

It’s 100% not on purpose that it makes people uncomfortable. You can tell through the lack of problems or consequences within the polygamy that the author’s view of the situation is quite positive, and you can tell by the early structure and foreshadowing that the author views it as an important part of the story.

Marko Genter

Or maybe they are normal grown adults who dont scoff, moan, groan and shake their heads at anything they dont agree with that a fictional story does like everyone else nowdays. Not to mention they already did last season whats the point of getting mad at it now.

Zachary Fewins

Somehow it feels way more tolerable in the light/web novel. I spent most of the second season waiting for the next big moment. It didn’t feel like that in the web novel.

pylonsf4

I'm not necessarily cringing at the polyamory and perversion. It's more so the fact that it feels self-indulgent and tone deaf at times. Great show all over though. I just have trouble recommending it to more straitlaced folks T.T

Wurzeldieb

Most of us can't understand poly relationships like for example Sylphy does, because it is extremely uncommon in our world. Especially from western, Christan culture. But it looks like it is just one faith in this world where it is seen as something bad.

RCG

Yes, the first scene where he pulls the blanket, for example. Of course, it’s something that can happen IRL but what’s the point of showing it to us as viewers? We already know that all three of them are fine with this relationship. We’ve seen them wake up in the same bed; everything is obvious. Do we really need to watch Rudeus as he looks at a sleeping, naked Roxy and mumbles some weird stuff? The scene right afterward as well, where Sylphie asks Roxy how Rudy was last night. She could have just said something like, “I hope you had a good night together,” or something similar and we could have moved on without having to sit through another 30 seconds of awkwardness. The panty scene at the end. I mean, it’s probably supposed to be a running gag at this point and I mind it less than the other stuff at the beginning but it still feels kind of unnecessary at this point. He’s an adult now, married and has a kid. Maybe it’s time to stop being a total weirdo.

Oasis

Ok. As promised below is a spoiler-free history of the world of Mushoku Tensei. Rudy learnt about this in the novels when he was teaching Eris, and we also get some information from Ruijerd and the other characters, so this isn't technically spoilers. I really do recommend reading this because it's going to be super important for this season, and I'm not sure how much the anime is going to explain since they didn't do that great of a job explaining it. It will be based upon the established history, which isn't spoilers but if you don't want to read it, feel free to skip over my comment: ~6,500 - 6,000 years ago: the First Human-Demon War begins, fought between the humans and demons. The Human hero Ars leads the humans to victory and establishes the Asura Kingdom, the capital city being named after him. ~5,000 years ago: Kishirika (who gave Rudy his Demon Eye of Foresight) starts the Second Human-Demon War. The Demons ally with the different races, who'd faced prejudice by the humans since they won the last war, and corner the humans. Kishirika fights, and loses/dies, to the Human Hero Aldebaran (The Golden Knight). Their battle completely destroys the middle of the world, which is why there's an ocean in the middle of the world map (see this map here: https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fcurrent-map-of-rudys-life-so-far-v0-ifr8q11ed4mb1.png%3Fwidth%3D1080%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D4463a284ed6e5f85b46dae43bb60f54ab54b708a) ~4,800 years ago: The humans gradually blockade the Demons on the newly formed Demon Continent which doesn't leave the Demons happy as its basically a barren land. **~1,000 years ago: This is the important stuff for most of the series now. A Demon called Laplace is born around this time and very, very quickly unites most of the demons under his rule, despite being born with a "Curse of Fear" (making everyone fear him). He's a super smart guy and manages to find a way to limit his curse (not completely remove it). He also has an enormous massive pool, maybe the biggest in history, and even Orsted and Badigadi compare Rudy's mana pool to Laplace's several times. He quickly gains the title of "Demon God Laplace" and rallies many of the different nations and races of Demons to unite and fight against the harsh conditions imposed on the Demons by the humans. Kishirika is born again (she resurects after death). **~500 years ago: The Third Human-Demon War, known as the Laplace War, begins. Laplace completely dominates the battle and the humans are losing majorly. Laplace manages to remove his curse of fear completely by transferring it to his Superd soldiers - offering them spears, causing them to abandon the spears they were born with (they have tails which fall off during puberty and become their spears). The curse works particularly well on the Superd as they have the same green hair as Laplace (he essentially tricked the curse into thinking that the Superd were him). The Superd go mad and start killing everyone, destroying their reputation. Kishirika is killed by a Superd. **~400 years ago: 7 heroes on the Humans' side unite the humans and fight back. 4 of the heroes die. The remaining 3 fight in the final battle against Laplace and seal him away. 1 of them dies during this battle. These 3 are known as the "Three Godslayers" (even though they didn't "slay" him). These people are: Perugius, the Armored Dragon King. He's part of the Dragon Tribe Race (same as Orsted and Urupen). He's still alive in his floating castle with his 12 familiars. He's essentially a legend to the people of the Asura Kingdom. Urupen, the Dragon God before Orsted. He's part of the Dragon Tribe Race (same as Orsted and Perugius). He dies in the final battle, passing on the title of Dragon God to Orsted. Kalman I, the First North God. A Human. He creates the North God style and passes the title on to his only son - Kalman II. He dies of old age many years later. After the end of the Laplace War, ~400 years prior, the world adopts the Armored Dragon Calendar after Perugius. It is labelled as K, with K0 being the end of the Laplace War. For reference, Rudy is born in K407. Hopefully that was a brief summary of the history. I know it's long but I honestly think it's important for this season. Please note that this is what is written in the humans' history books. Rudy does point out that some things seem inaccurate or don't make sense, and the fact that there's a lot of gaps in the history. That is intentional. Maybe this history is true, maybe it isn't. We'll never know.

Billbob

Yeah, as far as I'm aware of the only structured faith that gets brought up is Milis which was founded based around some holy warrior from the early human-demon wars and between their extreme anti-demon views and this monogamy push it really comes off as a way of trying to make sure the human race doesnt decline in size/status. But even though its a religion that mostly just humans follow, its not even too popular outside of the Millis Continent to the south, so rudy and sylphy both grew up where polygamy wasnt even questioned. Cant even recall a follower of Milis who didn't have family in the south tbh since Rudy's mom also came from there

Hayate

How people see polygamy as "disgusting" is incomprehensible for me. How stuck to modern ethics do you have to be to not understand that not everything has to mirror our real world ethics, especially in fiction. Plus, they seem happy here. If everyone is happy, nobody is hurt, and people are against their happiness for some bs ethic reason, maybe those people are the ones who are disgusting.

RCG

Nobody is getting mad. If anything, I’m disappointed because, like I already said, this show is so good otherwise and I felt the same way about the first seasons too. Great characters, an amazing world, beautiful animation but then there’s all this weird stuff that, at least for me, brings the show down a notch or two.

Zachary Fewins

Because that’s one of the greatest strengths of mushoku Tensei. Somehow people get it in their head that if the genre is fantasy, then realism must be the opposite of what is going on here. Fantasy that has no grounds in reality loses relatability and an amazing logical anchoring point. The closer the details are to reality, the more you can immerse yourself in a world with dragons and magic. Mushoku Tensei is an absolute masterclass in its worldbuilding, which makes it feel incredibly real. They talk about historical events in a way that makes it clear that a lot of it is mythical and by word of mouth, and every place they go to feels like it has a real and distinct culture, and so many side characters(Sarah for example) have actual life descriptions that make them not just tools for the story. Tolkien with lord of the rings is also another great example of this. His worldbuilding is so thorough and real, that even a world with balrogs and hobbits makes sense and has substance.

RCG

@Marko Genter They literally skipped scenes from earlier seasons because they were that uncomfortable with them. I don’t think they’ve ever done that with any other show.

The Anime Dude

Anime has done pretty good with a show not tell approach - which I appreciate for an adaptation, but there is a certain charm to the Rudeus internal monologues as it all happens, dude can be funny. Lol.

RCG

I’ve already said this in a few other comments but the polygamy itself isn’t the “disgusting” part (at least not for me). It’s certain scenes and the way the show chooses to portray them that feel like they have no purpose other than serving some erotic/harem fantasy.

RCG

Okay, glad we agree that those scenes are meant to be a harem fantasy, then.

RCG

I mean, I never said it’s wrong, just that it’s something I personally don’t like and at some points in this show it even feels over the top to me. If you or others like it, that’s not really my concern. For me it’s just weird that most people try to demonize polygamy and blame it as the only/major problem, when it really isn’t. It’s always about how you handle a topic.

DocGreen

They skipped sex scenes makes it easier for youtube and the actual act in most shows is unnecessary to actually watch

DocGreen

I think the word you are looking for is believability. Mushoku Tensei isn't suppose mirror our world it's supposed to make you believe these things are possible with these believable and relatable characters in this fantasy setting. Making you feel uncomfortable is part of the believability

Zachary Fewins

The intention is clearly not to make you uncomfortable and I don’t know why people argue that. The writing makes it incredibly clear that the author has zero problems with the situation, and even narratively rewards Rudeus for doing it. Believability is built by tying a story back to real and relatable concepts.

DocGreen

There isn't just one way to handle it. Most harems in anime never commit though. The MC has multiple girls but always chooses one or chooses none. Maybe that generic type of harem writing appeals to your values more. But mushoku Tensei writes it as if these two women are okay with it and trying to make it work even if st first it's initially awkward because of course it would be

Zachary Fewins

The problem isn’t that I don’t like harems, it’s that it clashes with all the other writing of the series in both quality and intention.

RCG

Lol, are you serious? That's crazy. You want to tell me they weren’t really uncomfortable but just skipped it because of Youtube? Since there is no other way to cut anything for Youtube, right?

RCG

@DocGreen I already saw your other comment and judging by that, you seem like a special kind of person. But I literally said in my first comment that I have no problem whatsoever with him having two wives. So why are you talking as if I do? I even said the exact opposite. I think it's unfair that people pretend the fact that he has two wives is the problem most people have with the show.

Æsir

I want to state, that the harem aspect personally does not weird me out. Its because of the culture I belong from. As long as all partners are happy it doesn't matter in my eyes. My point is, the East and West of the world have vastly different cultures. Its SEEMS like majority of the world looks down upon polygamy and other thing, but that is due to a bias of the internet audience being predominantly Western. I mean, cultures can be so wildly different. For example, my parents are first cousins.

Æsir

My point is simply that, some aspects, like polygamy, of Mushoku Tensei, may be understandably Taboo, but that is only majorly through Western lens

nik

Love the reaction guys! I wanted to mention by the way, that if you guys want better subtitles/translations with no mistakes, you should watch Mushoku Tensei through Netflix. If you use a VPN and go to Indonesia, you can go on Indonesia Netflix and watch Mushoku Tensei with Netflix Subtitles there. I watch using that, and it's a million times better than Crunchyroll. Netflix has better subtitles, so I hope you use them!

Æsir

You bring up a good point lol. Like how we stubbornly try to apply our own morality and rules in a world that is not compatible with it. Like reincarnation, say a child is a reincarnation of a 50 year old man, and he at the age of 25 marries his "childhood" friend. Or say a girl at the age of 50 regresses back to age 5, becomes friends with a person (who is also 5 right now) who was her enemy pre regression, and then marries him. In both cases, you are stumped if you try to apply OUR morality to it, stuck deciding if it counts as grooming or not. When in reality, our moral framework was NEVER designed with reincarnation in mind. So, for me, the whole discussion becomes frivolous.

Zen

The author made it very clear in the novel that things were awkward and uncomfortable at first after he married Roxy, especially the dynamic between Roxy and Sylphie because everyone's still figuring out on how to make things work. It got exponentially better later on. Mushoku Tensei is one of the very few harem stories that explore the dynamic of the harem between the wives incredibly well.

Eric

Im glad the author doesn't listen to the haters who cant seperate fiction from reality. We'd get just another power fantasy isekai. Mushoku has climbed to my #1 anime because of the world that was created and the characters and their stories and it doesn't matter what "morally superior" people think.

Rostislav

I can't help it—not many anime make Steph pull such funny faces 😂 *Bunny Girl* was one of them, and so *Mushoku*

Rostislav

It still amazes me that the author essentially combined *Attack on Titan* and *The Vinland Saga* into a degenerate package; it's incredibly frustrating because it's sometimes hard to watch, but at the same time, you can't just dismiss it because all the aspects are reeeally well done, lol. But this also gives the show its uniqueness—there are plenty of comedy shows featuring harems, whether male or female, but practically none where this theme is explored for reasons other than comic effect, set in a world where local Christians are a minority. I don’t know how realistic this is, since I’ve never personally encountered a polygamous family, but that’s another matter.

tpb181

I used to like these kinds of scenes in anime. Now I can't even watch past the first 5 minutes. Guess I'm getting old which is a shame because I enjoyed the last two episodes so much

Dragons like Bananas

To be fair the kidnapper would have to be pretty dumb to go after Rudy's family . The strongest guy in the area with this crazy reputation, all these connections and feared by the whole school. Probably not the best guy to mess with 😅

blood_drac

the title card at the end with the dragon riders is a reference to the web novel backstory called old dragon's tale

Rostislav

21:58 I don't think this is a spoiler—you've probably noticed—magic is cool, but an average swordsman can easily defeat an advanced mage, which is why almost all of the world's strongest people are swordsmen, not mages. Just imagine Eris using that sonic blast against Rudeus—he wouldn’t even have time to blink. Now imagine her doing that to a mage who has to cast a spell...

Rostislav

I totally get where you're coming from—I also got goosebumps when he went down into that basement—but let's not make any insinuations or put any expectations on Wes or Steph. Let things unfold naturally; don't get in the way of them having a genuine reaction to what happens next.

Rostislav

@Kindyh Bordat To be honest, Mushoku has never let us down when it comes to directing

Jack Witt

Important part from Volume 13 that was cut: "The two of them were still a little awkward with each other, but at least there wasn’t any hostility between them. You could tell they were trying to be respectful and considerate. That told me they wanted to make this work. A three-way relationship like this wasn’t as simple as a monogamous one. It was probably going to take some effort on all of our parts. In particular, we would be leaning on Sylphie a lot. Her open-mindedness was the only thing that had even made this arrangement possible. I’d gone back on my word to her and taken on Roxy as a second wife. She would have been justified in slapping me in the face with my divorce papers."

NoSoupRice

That shot of the basement door scared the everloving shit out of me

Lilanea

One thing that irritates me in this part is Cliff. While I understand that having a 2nd wife goes against his belief, he lives in a world where it is legal and somewhat normal. Why should Rudeus have to apologize to him. Also, Roxy is not some random stranger--at least from my opinion, Rudy has had feelings for all three girls since they became part of his life so why would it be surprising. Anyway, if Rudy respects Cliff's beliefs and his relationship with Elinalise, why can't Cliff respect his too. In the end, Rudy and the people in his life have formed a somewhat unconventional family but they do care about each other. If they are happy, Cliff should be happy for them (and Elinalise approves it as well as well as pushed for it to happen) .

Ryne

Rudy might be more powerful than Roxy, but Roxy is a Water King. Her mentor is both a Water Saint and Fire Saint as well. Rudeus is only officially a Water Saint and Earth Saint at the present (though the anime skipped him learning the Saint-tier Earth spell Sandstorm last season).

Zachary Fewins

What do you mean how do you set yourself apart?!! A harem story is like the least original thing ever in light novels… I’m like laughing my butt off cause you said that. There’s no good “explanations” or interesting/realistic complexities in the marriages. I’m okay with a lot of the pre-marriage pervyness cause he more or less gets punished for it. He has the entire ED arc partially because he was too sexually forward with Eris and it also just fits as Karmic punishment for his actions up to that point. He then gets into marriage and has a proper and kinda wholesome outlet for all his perviness. Nothing like that happens with the marriages. Nothing about them is particularly good writing. The point where he sleeps with and then marries Roxy is particularly dreadful and makes little sense, and then he basically just gets a slap on the wrist from everyone around him for cheating on his wife. Eris makes more sense, but whatever. Roxy is also constantly fetishized over her childish appearance, which doesn’t help. Honestly Roxy after being saved is probably my least favorite character in the whole series.

D B

It's hard to continue to be upset about it when Rudy seems alright with it, but it's still crazy to me that they framed her taking advantage of him as a selfless act.

D B

Oh it's very cool to hear about someone polyamorous who enjoyed the portrayal in the story.

D B

It's okay to not like those scenes, but I strongly disagree that they shouldn't be included or there's no point to their inclusion. The point of this episode is to establish Rudy's new normal, and see what his daily life with his friends and family is like now. I think there's a lot of value in small, quiet moments, like him gazing at Roxy and appreciating her beauty in the morning, or even in seeing the awkward dynamic between Sylphie and Roxy. I also think Rudeus IS a weirdo, and that's fine, it's part of what makes him an interesting protagonist. He's not always a moral paragon, and more often than not I find myself disagreeing with his feelings or behavior. But I still enjoy watching and rooting for him. The pantie shrine has been a bit more than just a gag for a while now. It was what he was using to help control his anxiety and stop panic attacks in S2. Yes, it's weird, but Rudeus is a weird dude. I think it fits his character and everything that's been established up to this point.

D B

The polygamy/harem will always make me uncomfortable, but I've already had over a year to accept it so I've made it peace with it. It does make me happy to see Rudy, Roxy, and Sylphie are happy in their bizarre family life. I'm glad to see other characters express their disapproval for it, like Cliff and Norn. It makes it feel a bit more natural.

nils_m

What makes the harem aspect digestible for me personally, is that every one of the three covers one of Rudeus' weaknesses: Sylphie mended Rudeus' sense of self-worth, Roxy drives him to try again when he fails, Eris sparks his courage and determination. In a way his relationship with each of them is somewhat fragile; an exclusive relationship with any one of them would likely be doomed to fail (see end of season 1), but together they stabilize one another. Imo, it's unfair to judge the harem aspect as a mere power fantasy: Rudeus doesn't have multiple wives because he's strong but because he's weak. As always when MT touches on something that would be fan service or a power fantasy in other shows it contrasts it with Rudeus' ugly sides, his cowardice, his perversions. Those who are accustomed to the usual self-insert isekai slop are put off and forced to recognize Rudy's character as something more than just a blank canvas for them to project their desires onto. The entire story is about Rudeus building relationships, connecting with others, struggling and falling short of expectations, but also mending his failures and re-earning trust. The harem aspect serves this overarching theme in ways an exclusive relationship with one of his wives never could. There are expectations placed on not only Rudy but also Sylphie and Roxy; there is conflict that needs to be resolved through proper communication: A polygamous relationship comes with its own unique challenges. You can see this from just this episode already. Sylphie and Roxy are blatantly awkward with one another; Sylphie works hard to make Roxy feel accepted and when Rudy fails to treat Roxy right Sylphy admonishes him. This is not a relationship that just magically works out, but requires effort from all parties involved. On top of that Rudeus' marriage also sparks conflict with some of his other relationships: he has broken a promise, which Cliff blessed, and thereby unwittingly insulted his faith; he has made Norn uncomfortable, someone who now more then ever depends on him as a protector as well as a role-model. All that is to say, the harem is not just some foreign plot device grafted onto the story but is rooted deeply within and branches into many more aspects than just Rudeus' love life.

RCG

You people are actually crazy and delusional. One guy thinks the only thing that saves Mushoku Tensei from being "just another power fantasy isekai" is having weird sex fetishes in the story. The other one wants literally every anime to have panty shots for no reason at all, just so you know, everyone who doesn't like what he likes gets owned. It's completely pointless to even try talking about a serious topic with people like you.

Eric

Because we aren't immature who care about a FICTIONAL STORY. Only immature people who bandwagon and can't form their own opinions always talk bad about this anime because they like to feel "morally superior". Im starting think people like you watch every episode just to complain about it.

Eric

Some people feel upset just because the story does not match their moral perspective. Mushoku Tensei acts like a "filter"; its storytelling is so magnificent that the controversial parts make it even greater. Naturally, people judge things based on their own experiences, but this story reminds them that it is just their own judgment.

Alyssa

Hey guys! When are we getting season 3 of Alice in Borderland?!!!

Krimsonwulf

I actually doubt anyone in Sharia would kidnap one of Rudy's family members, especially while he is there in the area. That would be a great way to set yourself up for not living anymore.

Fabien

Lol you guys are so funny. So needlessly dramatic.

Fabien

Why do you guys feel the need to "agree" with it ? It's irrelevant. What's relevant though, is that narratively it seems a little too easy and Sylphy seems a little too chill with it. Even in polygamous societies (some still exist), it was common it could create tension between the wives, or at least an awkwardness. It seems it's the case in the novel (according to someone in the comments at least), so I find it weird that it seems idyllic in the anime. That's what people should care about: is what's happening well-written given those circumstances ? I'd say in the anime, not really, it would feel more natural if the 2 wives were a little more awkward about it. But I'll never understand the people that ask themselves first "does that anime conforms to my societal norms and thus can I accept what's happening ?".

I understand but don't do that too much please. There's nothing better to waste their discovery than to have people saying one particular episode should be crazy. Creating expectation, is the best way to kill surprise.

Has anyone talked about how much Rudy’s parents in THIS LIFE influenced his development, from his mindset for his wives and his worshiping of Roxy each is a reflection of Paul and zenith respectfully.

Zachary Fewins

Bro I said literally nothing. I didn’t say it would be next episode, I didn’t say it would be a couple episodes from now. All I said was there is an episode that will be relatively soon that I’m excited for. From the perspective of someone who doesn’t know, that gives away literally nothing.

HopelesslyImmersed

No one agreed with it. The better question is why you all keep obsessing about it instead of moving past the established fact that it works for them. What is undeniably relevant is that its already a thing, its absolutely normal to disagree with it but actively denying it is weird lol. Its just a show, and polygamy isn't just taking another wife. Its people that don't like being tied down and have multiple partners too. Sylphy was not chill with it at the beginning, she was pissed. But ultimately she knew it was gonna happen because Rudy was Paul's son and grew up watching Paul, Zenith, and Lilia to know that polyamorous relationships can work. Besides its not inconsequential, but you'll find out :)

Wow lots of engagement this season 100 + comments almost the same as likes, just shows how much people actually like the anime but just keep it to themselves, once people can get over the controversial parts this anime is still just the forerunner in all aspects of Isekai

what i gathered from your comments is basically that you personally don't like harem and is disgusted by it so by default everything related to it is bad.... polygamy exists very much so in the real world too and a lot of ppl practice it... so i cant understand how that is simply power fantasy to you... this is one of the few shows where polygamy is written well and has ties to the characters personality, its not like its something like hey rudeus is cool and i fell for him for no reason and i dont mind being a second fiddle to another woman... every woman Rudy loves and marries played a huge role in his life and he played a huge role in their life and i dont see how writing harem into this story clashes with authors intetions i personally cannot imagine myself loving more than one woman but thats me and i could care less whether the mc has one or more as long as its written well

Zachary Fewins

It’s cringily free from the usual problems of polygamy and open marriages. In polygamy with partners who are treated equally, it almost always falls apart. Polygamous marriages in modern day have a divorce rate of over 90% on a span of 8 years. Rudeus’ wives aren’t subordinate to him like they would be in an ancient harem polygamy yet they have no significant problems with eachother or with the other women’s children, which was a common occurrence in older times. In any situation where the women have rights and autonomy, polygamy like this almost never works. You can tell that the author simply wanted this as the sexual fantasy backbone of the second half of his story. He didn’t write it to be realistic, he wrote it to be happy and horny.

lucie looks identical to elinalise

The whole logic Aisha wanting to be a maid is so stupid in my opinion. It is just another lame idea thrown in by the author to support his wish fullfillment logic of the story. This world basically exists for Rudeus to be glazed over. Polygamy is weird too and when people compare to it harem shows , they are missing the point. Harem is supposed to be non serious comedy shows most of the time. They are slapstick and the MC mostly never makes out with a single girl , and the ones that go far show that the MC ends up with a single main harem heroine. Comparing it to harems is just silly in my opinion. I only watch this show on Wes and Steph , else I won’t really be able to watch it 😂

It's not unrealistic, it's idealistic. I for one could not stand to read through 10 chapters of drama after one chapter of progress because wife A is mad at rudy because wife B got to spend 5 minutes more in bed with him. It's not what i'm here for and i think that goes for most of the target audience. There should be nothing wrong with a happy and horny home when the world around it is breaking apart. You brought up LotR earlier, you tell me how realistic and thoroughly explored aragorn and arwen's relationship was. It's fantasy, no one should freak out because love just happens to work out somehow.

Would you call the 10% of polyamorous relationships fake then?

Zachary Fewins

Theres always anomalies, that doesn’t mean they’re fake. It’s also only over the span of 8 years. Theres a good chance that all the polygamous marriages that made it through 8 years will just get divorced later on. It’s also possible that a lot of those are situations where the power dynamics are not equal. I remember there being a super rich guy with basically a cult harem where they were all subservient to him and obeyed him. That honestly probably has more chance at working long-term than a polygamous relationship between equals.

Zachary Fewins

You don’t need 10 chapters of drama. Just have one of them leave or have problems and negative views of the other womens’ kids. Some kind of consequence or major flaw. Have the issues build up behind the scenes. Not just “oh it was awkward for a little bit, but then everyone got along perfectly and was happy!” It only works out that way in a normal marriage like half the time, and eveything gets more complicated and unstable when you start throwing more people into the mix.

reignyoma

Either of them missing and there is no story. Rudeus cannot make it without all of em.

Zachary Fewins

He could’ve just been written without such a dependency, or some of them could’ve just not ended up as relationships. Roxy could’ve just… not cheated with him when he was vulnerable? I don’t care how mentally hurting he was, he could’ve made it back to his PREGNANT WIFE. There could’ve been drama with Eris feeling betrayed and not wanting to be the third wife which took a while to resolve and DIDNT end in marriage. It would be really easy and honestly lean even better into the deep realness that I love about mushoku Tensei. I hate Roxy with a passion. If Rudy is a predator, she’s just as much a predator. She’s also the authors outlet for his loli fantasies because her childlike stature and physique are constantly sexualized. She is older than Rudy’s parents and there’s no excuse of her brain chemistry still being young, because it’s only the migurd’s bodies that pause aging. Her parents are still fully mature adults. Then she is assisted by Elinalise to take advantage of a vulnerable Rudeus and then lie about possibly being pregnant so she can stay with him. Absolute scum and the scummiest fetish of the author. Eris is more understandable. Maybe there could’ve been just two wives and some real actual conflict between them. That would’ve been SO much better.
