A small detail the anime glossed over: The watermelon is seedless. Which is how they confirmed it came from their original world (or at least a different world) since this world's agriculture isn't advanced enough to create seedless crops.

Zachary Fewins

Perugius has appeared before. Like you were thinking he was the one in the Flying Fortress during the teleportation incident. There’s a little foreshadowing shot of him back in those episodes. You can see the guy who beamed down and fought Ghislaine. He’s the blond haired guy close to the right of the screen when it shows Perugius this time. I can’t wait for you to learn more about Perugius and his people. Also the war and Laplace. You were hoping the mage might be Laplace, but Perugius did personally fight against Laplace in the war with the other heroes like it said.

The Anime Dude

I will say that personally speaking… y’all’s early S2 reactions to that arc were my least favorite that I’ve watched, dude was depressed & tried to kill himself after all that & it wasn’t really played for laughs… but, nothing wrong with feeling bad for Sara at all, her pride was hurt & then Rudeus said more hurtful things about her right before they departed. No disagreements with what you said at the start of this video. Mushoku is good at having those sort of characters interactions where neither character is completely wrong or completely right, they were 2 people who acted immature & hurt each other w/o meaning to when they were feeling hurt & trying to protect their own pride.. Don’t worry/stress about it too much, hopefully commenters don’t give y’all a hard time - there’s no real right or wrong way to react to something, and we’re here cuz we like you guys & the commentary you provide when reacting!

eyalmazuz

Small remainder about Perugius. All the way back in season 1 episode 6 Ghislaine mentions him when talking about the calendar of the world and the castle in the sky. as well as in season 1 episode 8 (Turning Point 1), he sends his aide (Almanfi) to investigate, where the aide suddenly attacks Rudy, Roxy, and Ghislaine, thinking they are the cause to the teleport incident.

Dunsparce

You guys are like 90% right with Sara. From her perspective, she initiated sex with a guy she fell in love with, for her first time and he found her so unattractive that he couldn't get it up. Then she tries to protect herself, says it was only to repay the debt of saving her life, and basically calls him a piece of shit under her breath as she leaves. Literally the next time Sara sees him, he's drunk and boasting about spending the SAME NIGHT with a prostitute who's so much sexier than her. Suzanne tells her later what was 'probably' going on and she feels awful. She spends the entire trip trying to single Rudy out to apologise and he's just being a big baby and avoiding her the entire time. In hindsight she acted poorly, but they were kids. Rudy was 15 AFTER spending 2 years with Soldat. Don't really understand what people's problem is?

NoSoupRice

Discussions around MT are almost always two extremes. The side too critical of Rudy and the side way too defensive of him. Nuance can go take a walk.

Aquos Rocketleague & Stuff

Yeah no you absoloutely right, what rudeus said when he was with soldat was bad, very bad. But Even if she didnt know that he didnt have ED which she didnt, in my opinion doesnt change much since not getting it up can have many reasons and is not something someone should be shamed for. And of course she was like 16 and unexperienced so its whatever, but its for sure something that warrants an apology, so the only thing that i personally found "weird" were your surprised faces as they both said some pretty nasty things. Also im not sure but i dont even think she went to rudy to talk about it when he was with soldat, i think she was just outside prepping for adventure?

Fukayo

It's a 7 year program regardless of special student status. - Linia and Pursena: graduating - Ariel, Sylphie and Luke: 1 year left - Nanahoshi: 2 years left - Zanoba and Cliff: 3 years left - Rudeus and Elinalise: 4 years left I don't think you were wrong pushing most of the blame onto Rudeus. 1. After Eris left, Rudeus pushed everyone away, scared of being abandoned again, until Sarah's party helped him regain trust. 2. He saves her, they bond, he feels ready to move past Eris, but he can't get it up (he doesn't know he has ED yet, not until the brothel). 3. She leaves, calling him the worst of the worst. She's coping, but he doesn't see it that way, he just feels abandoned again. Rudeus has every right to feel hurt, it's like she rubbed salt in the wound. That's probably why people take his side. But can she really be blamed? She doesn't know his situation, she reacted the way most girls her age would. Rudeus gets that now, it's easier to reflect on with love in his life, so it's not an insecurity he avoids. He blames himself too, he's even surprised SHE apologizes.

DemoniCross

Love the organ for the reveal 34:04 BTW have you guys seen the ending? It's spoiler free if you'd like to

Kindyh Bordat

Again, this episode as a LOT of still frames and overall weaker direction with a few anime original scenes, but i really hope it's for what's coming later, because if it's badly animated i'll be incredibly disappointed.

Nejy

Am I the only one currently bored by the 3rd season's lack of conflict?

Kindyh Bordat

What the episode wasn't able to adapt: Rudeus turned 18, Lucy stopped nursing and started saying her first words, and Nanahoshi has now been stuck in this world for seven years. Also, Linia and Pursena can use magic, they just went straight for a brawl and never got the chance to cast. Casting mid-melee like that is something only people like Sylphie or Rudeus could pull off. And you could actually see it in the anime: the watermelon was seedless, which means it definitely came from the modern world. Finally, this marks the end of Volume 13, a new arc begins from here.

XDrakeX

The beast girls still went their separate ways. They just took the same carriage to leave town :) You can rewatch the ending of episode 8 S1 to see Perugius sending Almanfi to investigate.

Ryne

This is the first time we've seen Perugius since Turning Point 1. Definitely looking forward to the next episode. We're now officially on volume 14 of the light novels. As hard as it is to believe, this is where the novels really began to hit their stride (at least as far as I'm concerned.) They were good before this, but the second half of the series is on a whole other level.

Zachary Fewins

It’s gonna get better. The light novel definitely had a lot of downtime between conflicts and the anime is left to try and deal with that and manage to keep people’s attention.

Zen

Hell yeah, Rudeus and Sara concluded their "issue" like true adults; tolerant, open-minded, respectful, and honest. Which showcases one of the many aspects of Rudeus maturing. Great writing.

XDrakeX

"From her perspective, she initiated sex with a guy she fell in love with, for her first time and he found her so unattractive that he couldn't get it up." Sara should have noticed that that wasnt the case from his behavior towards her beforehand. He led her to his room. He took off his clothes on got in bed with her and then he was shocked and disturbed that it didnt work. Instead of insulting him and leaving the room and making it all about herself she should have tried to console him. I mean look at Sylphie and Sylphies reaction to the same situation. Thats the reaction she should have showed him if she cared for him and not for herself.

Kindyh Bordat

@XDrakeX, this is a medieval world, the notion of a healthy man unable to get hard is really rare to know.

RCG

Definitely very slice-of-lifey right now but I think it’s still fine (anime only watcher btw) and it seems like we’re going to the flying castle next, which is probably going to be pretty exciting.

Gopal

I think the slice of life had some nice moments, but it was definitely way too slow paced. A lot of the celebrations could have been sped up. If the celebrations were spread out, it would have been fine, but with so many in a row, it just feels kinda the same over and over again with very little new stuff each time. It doesn't feel different enough to warrant it going on for this long.

A Guy

While you aren’t wrong about the given perspective that she had, it was still a mighty huge leap on her part and she said pretty significantly hurtful and shameful things when Rudy said nothing nor acted in a way that would make it seem he was being dismissive of her when the incident occurred. I wouldn’t think too much about it though because it’s not an issue people have with you. It’s just probably built-up frustration from other people reacting to the show having a pretty ridiculous bias. I will say though I remember commenters being pretty frustrated because it took you quite a while to take the ED arc seriously and they found some of the things you said a bit this tasteful. But at the end of the day it’s a anime reaction it’s not worth letting stress build up over it, especially since you two are 100% on the mark most of the time

A Guy

I wouldn’t be too worried for the most part the still shots were placed where it would make sense. Sometimes studios go a little too far with cost cutting measures animation wise to save up for later episodes. But even with the production troubles during season two they’ve remained pretty consistent.

A Guy

People’s problem has less to do with what actually happened in the story because it was handled well I think it was more a buildup of frustration because a lot of people seemed to have a bias which Wes and Steph were a lot better about so I hope it didn’t come across too harsh for them that would suck

Tim Tim

This worlds years are based after this guys victory over Laplace in Laplace's war, so he really is a big deal in this world, we heard of him 3 times in season 1. First time were when Paul read the book for Rudy. Second time were when Rudy saw floating castle in sky, Ghilaine confirmed that Perugius is real and not just fairytales. Third, just when teleportation disaster happened, he said to one of his subordinate to invastigate what happened, and Almanfi (fast masked guy) thought Rudy were the reason and tried to kill him

XDrakeX

@Kindyh That doesnt change anything about my comment and about Sylphies reaction to it compared to Saras. Middle age or not, knowledge or not, you should still be understanding towards your partner instead of blaming them.

XDrakeX

I dont really agree to that. I really hope most girls her age dont react like that. Sylphie showed how girls should react. Not making it about themselves and paying attention to their partner. Sara should have seen that Rudy was shocked and panicked. She should have realized that something was wrong with him and that it wasnt about her. But leaving like that while spouting insults while the guy is on the ground is not justifiable.

Oasis

NO Spoilers - Guys I HIGHLY recommend reading this comment before you watch the next episode as there's a lot the anime skipped over in the earlier seasons and I'm not quite sure if they'll go over it in the next episodes: Perugius (pronounced 'per-OO-gee-us') is one of the "Three Godslayers", one of three heroes on humanity's side during the Laplace War (the Third Human-Demon War) around 400 years ago. He, and two others, killed Laplace, the Demon God; Laplace is said to have been one of the most powerful beings on the planet. His mana capacity was among the greatest. Rudeus' is at a similar level which is what Orsted said when they first met and fought, during Turning Point 2. We did see him in the first season, during the Teleportation Incident/Mana Disaster. He said, and I quote, "is somebody trying to undo the seal on Laplace". He sent one of his masked servants, Almanfi the Radiant (sometimes translated differently) to kill Rudeus, who he believed was the cause. He only stopped after Ghislaine, declaring herself as a Sword King, said that they had nothing to do with it. Make of this what you will. He is NOT a human. He is of the same race/species as Orsted - a Dragonkin. Hence why his title is the "Armored Dragon KING". Orsted, being the Dragon God, officially ranks higher than him (King -> Emperor -> God). Perugius lives on his Flying Fortress (which has a name but I'm not gonna say it). The fortress is his own thing; it's got nothing to do with Laplace. Also, there's no way Laplace would be friendly with humans like Nanahoshi. He did start a war against them. From next episode is the point where season 3 will begin in earnest. That's all I'll say.

Fukayo

Sylphie being "how girls should react" is a rough standard. At basically the same age as Sara, she got flung into the sky during the Mana Calamity, nearly died just breaking her fall with magic, then spent years living disguised as a male bodyguard dealing with actual assassination attempts, and lost 10 of her comrades on the road to the magic academy. Comparing that to how an average girl reacts is kind of unfair for teenage girls. Even the story treats her patience as extraordinary rather than the norm. I still think the root of the mess is Eris, not Sara. She (Sarah) reacted with zero context and assumed rejection, a pretty normal (if immature) leap. When Sara comes back the next day to talk, he's leaving a brothel badmouthing her in public. That's not an insult thrown in the heat of the moment, it's a second act, done after a night to cool down, and at this point he knows the issue is Eris, not Sarah. If anyone escalated with less excuse, it's him. Doesn't make Sara's handling justifiable in the moment either, and I'll give you that she owed him the apology she eventually gave when they reunited years later. But holding her to Sylphie's standard while ignoring that Rudeus hit back harder feels backwards. But hey, fair, different way to see this show, that's what makes it good.

Rostislav

No, she was looking for him to apologize after she talked to Susanna and Susanna explained everything to her.

Rostislav

I've read the book twice and watched the anime several times, and I didn't find Steph's reaction strange. Great analysis and reaction, I love how you both dig so deeply into everything

Mojito_

We see perugius in the flying forteresse during the teleportation incident and one of those masked individuals (the blond haired one) fought Ghislaine right before the mass teleportation incident too, because it was a long time ago (more than 2 years for you guys now) so it makes sense you forgot, but those characters were foreshadowed a long time ago, also perugius did fight Laplace with two other heroes during the Laplace war like mentioned in the end of the episode. This was the last slow/slice of life episode the next ones are going to be more action packed so yeah good stuff coming up.

Rostislav

@XDrakeX Dude, you're telling us how Sarah SHOULD have behaved, but we already know that, and we also understand why she didn't act perfectly. It seems like people are forgetting what this show is about. There are no perfect people on Mushoku. Sarah didn't know anything about male anatomy. Rudeus surely knew it was a bad idea to yell to the whole street about how terrible Sarah was in bed, but he was drunk. I don't think the blame is equally shared. Wes and Steph did a great job of breaking down this situation.

Raymond Throne

It's moderately played for laughs; after all, Rudeus struggling with being Elinelise's roommate while being impotent and coming up with increasingly convoluted metaphors referring to his Johnson isn't supposed to be particularly stonefaced. His condition's a bit funny by nature, even if it is legitimately painful and taken seriously by both the narrative and Rudy himself. "Rudy's ED is funny" and "Rudy sincerely struggles with ED, which affects nearly every element of his life and happiness" coexist. It's actually quite similar to how Mushoku Tensei treats sexuality in general; comedic, but taken seriously.

DocGreen

If she was teleported right after rudeus birthday she'd be in this world for 8 years

DocGreen

Expecting a 15-16 year old girl to have the emotional maturity of an adult is ridiculous. Sylphiette had a history with Rudy and waited to see him again for years. Of course she would act differently compared to a girl with a crush who started off not liking him to begin with. Your bias for the mc blinds you from this

The Anime Dude

I don’t necessarily disagree, I think the contrast with Elinalise lightened the mood on it a lot. Her character is also tragic yet funny in the same way with the sexual stuff. But, that was after a year long time skip where he’d spent time with Soldat. Prior to that in the time he spent with Sara (what they discussed here), it wasn’t really played for laughs. The scene where he almost ended it all had Soldat not reacted quickly definitely wasn’t played for laughs, yet I remembered them laughing through it - thus I remember personally not liking the reaction much, it felt weird. But, I’m not hating - & hope no one else hates either. There’s no right or wrong way to react, & I’d agree with most of what they said in the discussions this episode.

DocGreen

Enjoy the show for what is and stop anticipating the next turning point. That's my advice to all anime onlys. The first 8 episodes of Mt were slice of life until the end of ep 8. Everything the anime can fit into the episode has meaning even in the slice of life parts. It could lead to a crazy character arc or a big main plotline

David Stern

Omg it’s the prequel to chainsmoker cat

DocGreen

Just a little info for the ages of characters Rudeus is 18 now Cliff is about a year older Zanoba is 20/21 when him and rudeus first meet in S1 Eris and Sarah are 2 years older than rudeus Sylphiette 18 as well Roxy is the accumulative age of Rudy's present and past life so about 52 Zenith had Rudy at 17 but since she didn't visibly age in the labyrinth shes only 11 years physically older than her son Aisha and Norn would be 12 now Nina is a year older than Eris Jino is a year younger than eris Linia and persena are the same age as rudeus Ariel is 2 years older than him

Loro Lukic

We've met one of the masked fellas before in season 1 a while ago They saw the mana disaster, sent someone to stop it, thought it was Rudy and the gang and tried to kill Rudy, then Ghislaine protected them - basically said oops my bad lol then the mana disaster hit. We also saw their flying fortress in s1 too

Zak

You guys were definitely mostly correct about Sara. It is one of those things because the discourse around the show is so messy some fans forgot that you could be critical of the action of Rudy without outright disowning him as a character/ person. Also, two small details the anime skipped over 1. Since Elinalise isn’t a special student like Rudy, she was held back a year since she missed too many classes because she was traveling with Rudy to save Zenith (not that she cares). 2. Rudy was actually being more cautious and wasn’t 100% sure the watermelon was from earth until they cut it open and it is revealed to be a seedless watermelon.

Sergey (Horn)

I'm very glad to hear your thoughts on Sara. I agree with many of your arguments, but not on this one. You're watering down the insults Sara made before "she was rude." But she wasn't just rude. She first said she didn't have feelings for Rudeus, only duty (i.e., she tore apart his nascent willingness to bond with people and humiliated him), and then called Rudeus disgusting. Given the situation, this only exacerbated all his problems (he was already suffering from insecurity and was afraid of getting attached to people after Eris abandoned him). This is precisely why Rudeus said she had a "child's body" to make himself feel better. So, you're reversing cause and effect. The cause isn't just ED, but also Sara's actions. And he, unlike Sara, didn't say this directly to her (the fact that she overheard it was a coincidence). So, Sara, in order to feel better, struck him directly. Rudeus acted differently, and therefore, in this situation, he's the better person. By the way, your argument that he was already suffering from ED at that point makes no sense, since he himself didn't know it until he went to the brothel (and, by the way, even that might have meant nothing, since it happened right after the events with Sara). We know it was ED because of his words about it and subsequent events, but AT THAT MOMENT he could have been mistaken because of what happened with Sara (he could have simply been overly nervous and then suffered from her words). So, we know it was ED because we have postcognition, unlike the characters. It turns out that even if not for all the events with Eris, the nervousness and subsequent events with Sara would have been enough to create new trauma for Rudeus. And yes, the key moment is that after Rudeus insulted Sara and realized what he had done, he tried to kill himself. It was a stupid, but powerful act.

Krimsonwulf

To be fair Rudy didn't know about Rudy's ED before the interaction with Sarah. So he finds out his soldiers MIA and then Sarah says the things she said, namely the it being out of obligation, she never liked him and then the your awful as she walks out the room. Even given she didn't know the situation really kickin a man while he's down, no pun intended.

Drake Chuckle

As always, I super appreciate your guys discussion sometimes before and after eps. It's cool to see actual reflections on the chars and whats happening.

Aron Carranza

Your analysis to the whole Sara and Rudeus thing is almost completely spot on, and it did a lot to clear the air regarding the original season 2 reaction which didn't sit well with many people. Chalking it up to mutual immaturity due to age, alcohol, and a lack of understanding encapsulates how unfortunate that scene was for all parties. The only thing I didn't necessarily agree with here was Steph's notion of "since Sara didn't know the circumstance, she didn't do anything super nasty or intentionally hurtful, it was out of hurt just like Rudy's actions". Of course, both of their actions were out of pain/embarrassment, but I don't think that anyone's words being said out of hurt and without context is a cure to them being "super nasty". The words themselves are still as nasty and painful as they'd otherwise be- Sara definitely owed Rudeus that apology (and importantly vice versa)- but they're only just more understandable given her pov. Understandable or relatable isn't equivalent to "less nasty"- you can be understandably nasty and without conext for your words, not be aware of how nasty they are. Another thing is that the words weren't intentionally hurtful...yes and no. When he couldn't get it up for her, Sara was in pain and trying to spare her own feelings, which doesn't necessarily require her to hurt Rudy in kind, so I agree that the things she said were largely for self soothing and not to go out of her way to hurt him. However, it's also true that she had no qualms airing out those insults right in front on him. As such, one could argue that her coping mechanism subconsciously was actually to hurt Rudeus so he could feel some of what he inflicted onto her, which is a sadly common but immature tactic irl (think "emotional revenge"), as opposed to others thinking she just blurted them out in the heat of the moment without any intention to harm Rudy and he happens to find them offensive. Rudeus made very ugly statements of his own, but considering he did so on what seemed to be an empty street at night, and only intending for Soldat to hear them (and crucially not for Sara's ears), while Sara may have wished to redirect some damage onto Rudy, if only in part somewhere deep down, the same can't be said for Rudeus.

Nice
