Hey guys! We made a mistake and accidentally watched episodes 8 and 10! Sorry about that! We'll do 9 & 11 for next week! Let's just all pretend this is nonlinear story telling so I (Wes) don't feel TOO dumb lol

Don't worry about Rider's identity, she'll have more of a focus in other routes. That being said, you should definitely watch the Heaven's Feel movie trilogy after this! Also: Rider is NOT weak at all. It's just that a servant's potential power is also kinda tied to how strong their master is and since that person is Shinji... well you can guess.

No spoilers: Fate stay night is originally a game with three major routes. So rider gets more screen time in first and third route. Unlimited blade works is second. I hope you'll watch heaven's feel after wich is third. First one is adapted by Deen in 2007, it's not bad and kinda iconic but its a mash of all three routes with screwed direction so if you watched you would get a lot of spoilers so it's good you didn't start with it.

Rin liked uncle Karia, not "uncle" Kirei. Karia died in Zero. Kirei she disliked from start and only tasked him with protection of her dad wich he failed. It's not a spoiler but something you won't get from anime - Kirei was her teacher and caretaker and he spent Tohsaka fortune.

It is also explained in the novel that Saber loses to Souichirou, because she was taken by surprise, both because she doesn't expect a human to be able to fight like he does and because he is enhanced by Caster magic, but since she now knows, she would have no issue slaying him, that's also why Souichirou flee, he knew the element of surprise was how he was able to get one up on Saber, Rin kind of eludes this. So for the question if Saber retains memories, yes she is the only servant that does, this wont be explained in this anime nor in the movies, her story is explained in Fate route, but she's pretty much still kinda of alive kind of in limbo, it is also why she doesn't dematerialize like other servants, the rest of the servants do get their memories wipe every time they are summon

First, as everyone is saying, you guys skipped a chapter. 9th chapter. Second, the poem that Rin reads in the dream about Archer is horribly mistranslated. The actual poem goes like this: "My body is made of swords. Iron is my blood, and glass is my heart. I have overcome countless battlefields undefeated, Without once retreating, Nor once being understood. Always alone, intoxicated with victory on the hill of swords. Therefore, there is no meaning to that life. This body is probably itself a sword" Third, yeah, remember that Fate/stay night is a 3 part story. You're only watching 1/3 of the story. So if you feel like something was underdeveloped it’s probably because it is adressed in the other 2 parts: Fate and Heaven’s Feel. And that’s why after watching HF you guys should watch the 2006 anime that adapts the Fate route 😌

Spoilers don't read! She actually isn't with Shirou as her master. He holds her back tremendously! It's just that she's so strong that she can cope even if her master is bad.

So this is a scene from the Visual Novel, but it happens between Shinji and Gilgamesh in the worm pit. The Matou family lost the foundation of their magecraft when they left Russia making their generations after that event deteriorated. When Shinji's was walking by the wormpit he started thinking about his mother. She was a woman from a family that had a trait that almost guaranteed children with magic circuits, but he was born as a normal child anyway. As punishment Zouken threw her into the wormpit as food. Shinji's only thought on the matter was that it was natural as the Matou family has no use for useless women (yes his views are partly based on that). Shinji's wish to the Grail is to become a mage. Also, since you guys apparently skipped episode 8, Gilgamesh after manifesting as a incarnation upgrade his Independent Action skill to A+ so he suffers from no side effects on his stats even if not contracted to a master.

21:55 That being said, readers/watchers are supposed to already know Kirei is evil when they start UBW, since it's the second route of F/sn. Idk if you totally understand what we've meant by "routes" all this time: it's the 3 parallel stories of F/sn, shaped by different choices in-game. Even if in practice, you had to do them in order: the first route Fate, then UBW, then Heaven's Feel (they "unlock" when you finish the previous one). Thus, when you discover UBW's story, you already know another version of the story: Fate. In which Kirei had a large role, so you know him very well. It's also the case for some other characters, as well (just some). But yeah of course, for the characters in the story themselves, Kirei is just a suspicious priest nothing more. So far. 25:01 Same remark for Saber's identity: if you do the story in order, you actually still know who Saber is in UBW. It's one of the twists of the Fate route. So it's not presented as a major deal in UBW narratively. So for this particular matter you'd know regardless, even without Fate/zero.

Rider is not weak at all. she's amazing in FGO and other Fate works too. It's just UBW as route with Shinji she basically got shafted. Please remember that there's three routes to fate stay night and the correct order is fate route > UBW > HF. In each route different characters get more focus and get shafted / removed early. There was never was a pure adaptation of the fate route so there's some characters that and things that only shown there.

A very important detail that isn't really clear in the anime: Kuzuki was reinforced by CASTER's magic. It's only the combinaison of his own skills, and of caster's magic, that makes him a fighter as tough as a servant. Alone, he wouldn't be. And as others said, Saber was kinda taken by surprise (and she's still nerfed by Shirou...). And as others said again, you skipped one episode. That's why you didn't get how we got there with Shinji.

The 2006 anime didn't adapt the Fate route.. the skeleton of it was the Fate route but with elements of UBW **and** HF mixed in. If they wanted the Fate route, they can play the VN instead.

You're right, but it’s still mostly Fate route. It only have like 4 episodes of a mix between UBW and HF, out of 24 episodes. I'm recommending the anime since this is not a gaming channel, they're not playing the VN. So the best we could hope for is a reaction of 2006 FSN.

- The original visual novel Fate/Stay Night consists of 3 storylines with the same starting point meant to be experienced in a specific order. Keep that in mind if a character has a short or limited appearance in UBW (the 2nd storyline sequentially). That character was likely heavily featured in the other storylines. It makes for an interesting narrative framing. A loose comparison are Re:Zero's death resets where different reset attempts focus on different characters and events play out differently. - Rin was never fond of Kirei, even as a child, nor did she call him Uncle. Kirei was stiff, overly formal, quiet and hard to read to or connect with to child Rin. Her opinion of him only seemed to have worsened since. - Kuzuki's fighting capability is enhanced by Caster's supreme magic and he has an incredibly bizarre and unpredictable martial arts style, so he caught Saber by surprise, and she couldn't recover her bearings after that first hit. On top of that she's debuffed by having Shirou as a Master. Once Saber properly recovered, that's when they fled. Kuzuki's surprise "gimmick" attack wouldn't work again on Saber. As a Servant she's vastly stronger.

Im ngl, I'm pretty sure they're gonna watch heavens feel after this, and telling them about Rider in the way that you did is pretty spoiler-y cause it sets expectations moving forward. I'd rather they enter heavens feel completely blind without that info cause it makes everything so much more impactful (i just recently watched it for the 1st time blind so my opinion comes from that experience).

I can't understand this opinion. This week we wouldn't have gotten any action scenes otherwise, so I treat it as an unexpected surprise. And them watching episode 10 ahead of episode 9 won't actually change anything in their reaction to EP9 or even the episodes that come after that. As the other guy stated, nothing is ruined.

Also just curious of you guys ever had this thought on your mind, that maybe Rin also has a crush on archer! The ending theme song gives me a lot of those vibes.

Reasons Kuzuki retreats aren't very clear in the anime. His combat style is explained as having extreme advantage on first contact, but loses a lot of efficacy if he has to fight someone already familiar with his style. The Saber class is also THE class with highest magic resistance just from the class itself, so is generally a very poor match up for Caster.

I am still loving this. Love to see Wes's non secular method of chasing red herrings, as I always find it amusing. As others have stated, dont worry about rider, if you would have watched it in the VN order it would have revealed more about her, but to be frank if you watched the Deen Studio's version first, ya'll might have abandoned it by episode 2. Don't worry about pronouncing Enkidu; since, after Re:zero I dont expect Wes to be able to pronounce anything correctly; as i still dont understand why ya'll doing sub if you are not going to listen how the VA pronounce stuff, such as saw-koo-rah. I want to really emphasize how you are not getting into spoilers and really trying to figure stuff out. It **really** makes it re-actionable to see the thought process of the reactors.

If you'd like to learn about Asian history, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is a good epic for the Chinese three kingdoms. If you learn about the Sengoku jidai, Warring States of Japan. it's like GoT, lots of backstabbing, friendship, and epic heroes.

Gavern -> It's above all the routes-mixing that make the old series problematic. It takes a part of UBW, the battle with Caster, and put it in the Fate route but in a different/weird way. As a result the story makes little sense in general, to say the least. Thankfully there's no real part of Heaven's Feel mixed in, except that weird BDSM outfit they gave Sakura for whatever reason rofl. I think the optimal experience to discover F/sn with the animes only, would be to watch that Deen season first but while skipping entirely the Caster part to avoid spoiling UBW with a deeply inferior version of the story. Then watching UBW and HF. If they had to watch the entire Deen season, it's better to skip it, it just would make UBW rebarbative.

Please just remove the part about Rider in HF, don't spoil all their fun. Why saying what should happen in another route ? You must know what you're doing is bad for their experience. They don't have to know which characters will be a focus in Heaven's Feel.

I changed my comment, but I think this is pure nitpicking, especially since other comments are talking about this exact same thing. ​Complaining about a minor detail like that is weird when they started with Fate/Zero, which is a prequel meant to be experienced after Fate/stay night. ​They are also watching without the Fate route (which unfortunately never got a proper modern adaptation), so it's basically like starting from the middle. On top of that, the Fate anime adaptations in general cut a massive amount of context, especially the internal monologues and specific events that completely change how you view the characters compared to the visual novel. You really can't ignore that context if you want to understand the franchise and its mechanics properly. ​Even as someone who went through the VN and watched the anime, I still don't remember every single detail and constantly discover new things because the franchise is so massive and interconnected. Turning every bit of basic route mechanics and background lore into a "spoiler" just discourages discussion entirely.

I think you're mixing up what kariya's relationship is with rin and Sakura with kirei. Rin never liked kirei, it was kariya that the two girls were close with.

For some reason I remembered things differently (same as Wes & Steph). I thought Rin and Kirei might not be close but atleast she had a positive view on Kirei. so I looked it up. On the first episode of Fate/Zero, Rin literally said "I don't think I'm ever gonna like you" (to Kirei).

I'm surprised at how much traction this series has, I was expecting the amount of comments to maybe fall off with UBW since I assumed zero was more popular but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Fate has incredible lore / powerscaling / worldbuilding intensity, so you can easily discuss it for hours.

​I already edited my comment, so calling me stubborn makes no sense. ​The reactors literally favorited a comment by @Lulluf recommending Heaven's Feel and explaining the exact same thing about Rider and Shinji. I'd understand this concern coming from actual moderators, but without dedicated spoiler tools like on Reddit, over-policing casual comments just creates unnecessary friction for people trying to discuss the show. If the creators themselves appreciate the context, there's really no need to speak on their behalf.

@Marek Lack of Fate route watching, more like. There is a Fate route adaptation, it's what got most of the veterans in the west into the franchise. It has its issues but newcomers don't notice much, and especially if you've already been spoiled by Zero already the issues matter even less.

Kidd-> A third of the old Fate anime was about a weird and incoherent version of the battle against Caster, thus it's taken directly from UBW. The series makes UBW redondant so it matters. Also, in that anime everything in the story that is not directly taken from the fate route, is incoherent and absurd. You can't call that a proper adaptation of the fate route. I still wish a good studio would make a true adaptation one day.

It depends. The original story doesn't have so many characters but there's a kind of extended universe now yeah. But for the original story, just Fate stay night, Fate hollow ataraxia and Fate zero were enough to have answers for everything.

About the "beautiful" background music during Rin and Archers conversation in E10- musically it's based on one motif called "Rin's melody", the very first one in E0! Lots of the background music uses "Rin's" theme so I'm sure you'll hear it! Others are original, or even remixes from the OG game!
