Master Zoro101

These few episodes really show what turning points can bring to the story and everything after this is incredible

soldano

Happy 2 thousandth post and I'm so glad it's mushoko

Zak

Regarding the Human-God (Jinshin/人神) and Man-God (Hitogami/人神) translation it is hard to explain in without understanding a little about Japanese. They both have the same writing and meaning in Kanji (人神) but because Japan adopted Kanji from Chinese, most Kanji have two different way to pronounce it, traditional native Japanese pronunciation (Hitogami) and Sino-Japanese pronunciation (Jinshin). In the show every “God” (Dragon God, Demon God, etc) uses Sino-Japanese pronunciation, and what old Rudy was saying is that traditionally people from Rudy’s world have always known and use the sino-pronunciation of Jinshin (Human-god) instead of Hitogami (Man-god) in mythical writing/ story, even if they both share the same writing in Kanji. It is only people who have actually met the Man god or know someone who has would use the pronunciation of Hitogami, because this is how Hitogami refers to itself. This is also why Orsted immediately deem Rudy as an apostles of the Man God when Rudy reacted to the title of Hitogami and leave a doughnut in his chest.

Irithylia

So, about old Rudeus and Rudeus having the same voice actor... That is true, but one important point is that it's the same voice actor as "inner voice" Rudeus, not "outer voice" Rudeus. Outer voice Rudeus is voiced by a the very talented Uchiyama Yumi (a woman). She voices a lot of male characters, actually, one you know, Hoshino Aqua!

soldano

16:40 tbh i think it's pretty reasonable not to care so much about ed and forget how much it hurt when oldeus spent 50 years of agony after losing pregnant roxy ,sylphie, eris ,nanahoshi , and cliff just from what we know from this episode. In my opinion that's a much bigger trauma ,that ed pales in comparison.

Exit

The music in this episode was just incredible

The Anime Dude

What an amazingly directed episode with excellent sound design - despite already having read this & knowing what would happen, it kept me on the edge of my seat & engaged… even with an episode that was 90% dialogue between 2 men (or 1 man?) in a single room. I’ve never been so excited to read some old man’s diary.

Kindyh Bordat

Next week is going to be insane. A quick reminder for everyone: Oldeus is a completely different person from our current Rudeus, so please don't let his actions change your view of our Rudy! (Even tho the anime will probably tone thing down really hard) Regarding the confusing Human-God/Man-God translation, it comes down to a nuance in Japanese kanji. Both titles use the exact same written characters (人神), but have two different pronunciations: Jinshin (Human-God): The traditional Sino-Japanese reading. In-universe, every historical deity (Dragon God, Demon God, etc.) uses this formal naming convention. Regular people in Rudy's world only know the deity as Jinshin through ancient myths. Hitogami (Man-God): The native Japanese reading. The entity calls himself this, meaning the only people who use the specific pronunciation Hitogami are his apostles or those who have personally met him. This linguistic detail is exactly why Orsted instantly attacked Rudy in Season 1. Simply reacting to the name Hitogami was all the proof Orsted needed that Rudy was in direct contact with the Man-God.

This is gonna be such a good watch, I'm so excited to hear you guys talk about this! 28:00 | LOL, it's funny Steph says that because after this episode aired, I saw a drawing on X that an artist made of Sylphie watching Rudy take the body out back and burn it, wondering, "Who did my husband just murder?" It's kind of dark, but it really made me wonder if they were watching this and maybe came to the conclusion that he killed a burglar and didn't want to tell them. Also, a little tidbit, but the reason they cremate dead bodies in this world is because corpses can sometimes come back as undead or whatnot if left alone. That's why it's pretty traditional to do this to the dead, even if they were an enemy. 37:25 | Yeah, as Wes said, most of the time in the light novels, when Rudy describes the Man-God, he says he could be seen as either sex or neither. Rudy always says it's hard to get a good look at him. And now that you've made it this far into the show you now know the most dangerous enemy Rudy has ever faced.... A RAT !!! I also saw another hilarious fanart done on X where an old rat from the future comes to the rat in the basement and tells him, "Don't eat the leftovers in the kitchen, the Man-God is tricking you," and man does it make me love this fandom XD

DocGreen

In the novel it was said he was using wind magic to breath and talk since he was missing organs

ReCursed

It's so sad for Oldeus - he wanted to go back into his young self and save his family but only thing he can do is save this Rudeus Family. Also God of Humans and Man-God are very different things. Why he changed name is future mystery. You didn't catch difference cause it's hard to get from Human God (as god of humans) and Man God (as man that is a god).

Irithylia

"To borrow a term from a certain game, I'm in a different world line" Rudeus played Steins; Gate confirmed!

TheLoyalBro

Greyrat - 1 Grey rat - 0

Gopal

What's interesting is how the man god has done things in the past to make Rudy not see Roxy which seemed like funny unlucky coincidences back then, but now it seems deliberate. In season 1, the man god had Rudy separate from Eris and Ruijerd which made Roxy not see Rudy on the beach that one time. Then mangod tells Rudy not to go save his mom where Roxy is also at, which I'm now sure the man god was just lying when saying Roxy would survive.

Marco Nodo

actual steins;gate reference at 30:31

Akurogi Musai

Another Lost in Translation moment: when Oldeus refers to Eris as “the prince of the veggies,” he is making a direct reference to Vegeta from the Dragon Ball series. Vegeta was originally an enemy who constantly claims he is going to kill the protagonist, yet he always helps when required

Akurogi Musai

“Don’t eat the bread, Hitogami deceived you”

XDrakeX

In the end future Rudeus was using his eye of foresight and saw Sylphie and Roxy entering the room. You can imagine how far in the future he can see. He was quite the monster.

Jan Češka

In case no one has said this yet, going back to the past literally erased most of his organs from existence. so he was sustaining himeslf purely on mana. He even used wind magic in order to talk since he didnt have lungs

Oasis

This was a big episode. Since I didn’t want to say anything last episode I’ll talk about non-spoiler things for both of these episodes. It’s heavily inferred that you shouldn’t trust anything that the Man-God says. So when he said “Paul and Roxy would’ve survived and rescued Zenith if you hadn’t gone to Begaritt”, take it with a grain of salt. Although it’s never explicitly confirmed, Roxy most definitely would’ve died, I think Zenith wouldn’t have been rescued, and I think Paul would’ve lived. Roxy dying is a key part In the first season, you may remember when Rudy missed Roxy on the Demon Continent. That was directly because of the Man-God. Make of that what you will. In the novels, Old Rudy says that the rat most likely came from Perugius’ Castle, hidden in the luggage that they brought back. Old Rudy had no digestive organs (which is what allows you to regenerate mana), and his other organs were literally dead. He literally kept his brain and heart running with electricity magic. With his mana running out, he was dying the whole time. In Japanese, there’s a very clear distinction between the names “Man-God” and “Human God”. They are two different names. Every time you called the Man-God “Human God”, technically it wasn’t accurate. But we couldn’t say anything 🤷‍♂️. Why he changed his name to another name so similar is related to the mural that we saw in Perugius’ castle. It’s also related to Orsted in some way. I’ll give no more information than that. Remember that although the novels for Mushoku Tensei are complete, it is meant to be a “prequel story”. Even novel readers don’t have answers to everything until the author starts writing the sequel. Hopefully he will explain a lot of things then. So some theories are speculation based upon the spin-offs as well.

Oasis

Great reaction guys!!

Fabien

About the Man God not being totally evil, I don't know. Everyone seems to hate this guy, at least Orsted does and Perugius underlings couldn't have asked that question without a reason. Also, he gives me evil/twisted vibes personally.

Rainer

The man god's voice actor Kujira is a woman. She has a very androgonous voice

blood_drac

Man God and Human God/God of Humans are meaningfully different. It's not really a play on words though. Man God is like a personal nickname. Most people when referring to this being will say Human God/God of Humans but only few know the name Man God and will refer to him as such. That's why in S2 Badigadi was surprised that Rudeus knew the name Man God.

Zak

Turning point 4 basic summary be like:

Zak

Fabien

Regarding where the rat comes from, I don't remember well so somebody else will have to confirm, but I believe in the novel old Rudy mentions that he thinks that rat came from the demon continent, and somehow was transported back by accident by our party. I'd have to check, it's been so many years I've read this stuff.

XDrakeX

Roxy wouldnt have died. If you read the novel you should know that. And why the rat thing was necessary.

ByakkoByakuya

The anime showed a shot of rats in Perugius' Sky castle back when Rudy was exploring the mural. It's assumed that the rat hitched a ride on Rudy or Sylphie's luggage, and the two unknowingly brought it to their house.

Fabien

Apparently the author confirmed Roxy would have died. By it was just a comment I've read somewhere, I guess I'll have to check to be sure.

XDrakeX

I always love it when people say "everyone". The only one who hates him is Orsted. We didnt see anyone else showing such a hateful reaction towards him. Only one person and with future Rudeus now 2. And that was all. Ruijerd didnt show hate when he heard the name, Badigadi didnt show Orsteds reaction, Silvaril also didnt show that reaction. mangod also never forbade Rudy to tell others about him. That tells me that people normally shouldnt react angry hearing his name.

Browncoat Loki

I usually put off watching the episode until you guys react, but as a book reader I cant wait that long for the next one. It is honestly the episode ive been wanting to see the most.

Rostislav

Remember how, partway through the first season, Rudeus missed Roxy because SOMEONE sent him to Kishirika? Roxy saw Ruijerd and Eris on the beach, but not Rudi There's also that “strange” conversation between Orsted and Nanahoshi in Episode 21 of Season 1. 47:45 In Episode 21 of Season 1, you literally had the answer to that question but didn't realize it (and, in fact, couldn't have) :) Or the way Hitogami talked Rudy out of going to save Mom in Season 2 so he wouldn't run into Roxy. human-god or man-god... “Mushoku” is written in a similar way to “Attack on Titan,” where every now and then we see something strange—something we think isn't important—and then, 50 episodes later, everything falls into place.

hws

Also iirc, in the japanese LN hitogami first introduces himself in katakana instead of kanji. which can sometimes carry the context of foreignness or childishness. Though its possible it was done to distinguish between jinshin and hitogami.

JohnnyBSMK

It turns out that Rudeus Greyrat's biggest enemy was.....a grey rat. ba dum tss.

Rostislav

The analogy with Satan from the Bible is interesting

Rostislav

A mini SPOILER for the next episode Considering what we'll see in his diary... it's probably for the best that things didn't work out for him

Dragons like Bananas

It doesn't really make sense in English but Man god = Hitogami (ヒトガミ) writiten like a persons name , usually a non Japanese name Human god = Jinshin ( 人神) written like a formal title (the same way as north god , sword god ECT...) But I think the important part is that people would only recognize him by his title Human god not is "personal name " man god

Xan

What the hell!! Spoilers!!!

Xan

You are running an opportunity that could have been explained later...

Zak

In the web novel the first introduction is in Kanji. But it is quite possible for the LN version it is written in Kanji (人神)but with Katakana (ヒトガミ ) labels on top of it (furigana). But you are correct, usually Katakana are used in borrowed foreign words and names, as well as in alias. So using Hitogami+ in katakana can be viewed as more of an alias/ informal. While Jinshin has a more formal feel.

Jack Witt

Man-God (ヒトガミ, Hitogami) vs Human God (人神 (ジンシン), Hito-shin (Jinshin)) It's something that loses a bit in translation. ヒトガミ is in katakana. Traditionally, it should be written in kanji as 人神. Authors frequently use Katakana for character names to make them stand out, give them an otherworldly feel, or signify that they are a proper noun. In Mushoku Tensei, the linguistic play between 人神 versus ヒトガミ serves as a masterclass in narrative wordplay and world-building. In Mushoku Tensei, every other god or deity uses On'yomi (the Chinese-derived readings of kanji) for their names. For example: Dragon God = Ryūjin (竜神) Demon God = Majin (魔神) Water God = Suijin (水神) To a native Japanese reader, reading 人神 as Hitogami sounds incredibly casual, almost blunt. By having the kanji display the grandiose title of Jinshin while forcing the reading Hitogami, it perfectly mirrors the entity's personality: a terrifying, ancient cosmic force (Jinshin) trying desperately to act like a casual, trustworthy buddy (Hitogami) to manipulate Rudeus.

DocGreen

Again proving you don't know what a spoiler is sad really

Jack Witt

Wish I had seen this before I posted my comment. Seems redundant now.

Zak

Great minds think alike

Rostislav

4 turning point basically...

Rostislav

Silphy: "pls be Nanhoshi 🙏"

Rostislav

@Xan This definitely won't be explained later, because after Oldius's death, there's no point in it.

A.G

I've read the novel but I dont get what you mean, I also think Roxy would of died, unless im forgetting something?

Dragons like Bananas

I could be misremembering but I think old Rudy didn't even have lungs and was only able to talk/keep himself alive with wind magic

NoSoupRice

Oh boy i wonder what silly whimsical wholesome adventures Oldeus has been writing in his diary

Billbob

Yeah, the studio absolutely knocked this one out of the park and I couldnt be happier. It really shows when a company seriously cares about the product they are delivering and are lucky enough to have the time and budget to do so. Reminds me of the FF7 remake which despite some issues people may have with it you can just tell its a complete passion project made by people who truly love the source

CD Elio

Who wins Rudeus Greyrat vs a gray rat.

Gelondil

I definitely wonder which World Line we are on now. Are we getting closer or further away from the Prime Mushoku Tensei World Line? Will Rudy's son have to go back in time and make out with Roxy and/or Sylphie to keep himself from being unborn? Joking aside, Rudy not saying anything to Roxy and Sylphie is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Protagonists keeping allies in the dark over critical information has never, ever, lead to positive outcomes.

Gelondil

@XDrakeX, I think you're taking this "everybody" too literally. A few people have neutral opinions about him, but that could just be because they've never met him and have no opinion. Nobody who knows him has said anything nice about him at all. The 3 people we know of who should know him best either hate him or are at least wary of him.

Ryne

"Why isn't he telling them?" Yes, let Rudy tell them in the middle of the night that he's been getting advice from a god that they don't know exists for the last decade, and that the one time he obeyed without question, his future self from an alternate timeline appeared in his study to warn him of an apocalyptic future where they all die. Right after said future self chastised him for being too soft and gullible. They have enough on their plates without finding this all out in the middle of the night, particularly when he doesn't have any details. Telling them before he reads the diary and he has more information would make them worry needlessly. Not the kind of thing you want your currently pregnant wife to experience.

Klinch

That's funny. I love dragon ball and didn't get that reference.

Browncoat Loki

The main theory i have heard is it was on the flying fortress and wandered into their gear for a snack. We also see rats on chaos breaker. I dont remember the books mentioning where it came from at all.

Gavern

In the simplest possible terms, it goes from being a title to a name. Is that about right?

Gavern

Been awhile, but I'm pretty sure the books said they were on Chaos Breaker.

Bobby Vang

Oh shit, it's a rat. *insert meme here*

Azer S

I think it would be more obvious for a japanese. Of course everybody saw the link between vegeta and vegetable. But in japanese this link is way more present. Saiyan-jin come from yansai-jin (vegetable-man). And they all have vegetable name Radditz, Nappa, Broly, Kakarotto, Thalès -> Radish, leaf-vegetable, Brocoli, Carott, Lettuce

Azer S

Yet it's a big risk, what if Hitogami appears to Sylphie or Roxy and lead them to a trap? I think they should know there is a cosmic entity wanting their death.

Azer S

I'd say he's evil, because of his reaction to Rudy loss "I'm glad you're such an idiot" before laughing. I could imagine a good guy manipulating a man to lose his entire family because say family would cause the end of the world or something. But after that, a good man would probably feel terrible and try to apologize/explain himself. Not "man, i got you SO easily lol"

Ryne

It's actually an incredibly small risk. They'd both talk to Rudy about it before acting. Anyone who knows them would know that. There are other reasons its not a risk, but some of those reasons are deep in spoiler territory.

Eric

Crunchyroll subs were absolutely terrible this episode

Krimsonwulf

That was 100% old Rudy, he had the same doughnut scar, the same mole, and way too much our world information to have learned it from their world. As to is he on the level? I mean he went back in time leaving his insides behind, when you add in the rat in the basement it's pretty much a guarantee. Next week is gonna be crazy and then I think they are taking a break, worst time to do a 2 cour season. If next week is what I think it is this anime's gonna be living rent free in a bunch of heads.

Oasis

I’ve read the novels. Roxy most likely would have died. Did you see the state she was in before Rudy saved her? If he wasn’t there, she definitely would have died

Nina

Omg, when he just used the freezing magic in the room, I was so scared that one of his sisters was inside. It's like shooting blindly in a room. If Man-God could see future Rudy coming back, that would have been a brutal plot twist. I can't begin to explain how I held my breath there, phew. :D

outcast_wolf04

Literally every second I’m going to have to wait for 3x13 is going to be agony…episode of the decade 🔥🤯 need it asap!!

Sharrpfangs

The only reason its different now is he went back in time rudeus would still end up the same way just different so stop tryna make him a good person

Oasis

Oh boy. After watching ep 13 that came out yesterday, I just can't wait for your reactions

Kindyh Bordat

By that logic, anyone with a timeline where tragedy broke them is "really" evil, which is basically everyone. Future Rudeus shows what he becomes after losing his family to Hitogami's manipulation. That's the whole point of the diary: things don't turn out the same.
