These episodes are too short. 😭

I think something I've observed with Maomao is that she's somewhat farsighted in her empathy. She's incredibly observant and deductive in the world and all its mysteries, understanding both cause and motive in her investigations. With things closer to her, however, she starts to become a little bit blind. No matter how overt Jinshi is with his feelings, Maomao still can't stitch together his moments of obsession to realize he's actually romantically attracted to her. Similarly with Shisui/Loulan, it took her much longer to realize her identity than you would usually expect of her (although I will say that I believe Loulan is the smartest character in the whole series). Regarding either, she never actually talks about her feelings, and when prompted by Jinshi she can't really pin down what exactly her relationship with Shisui/Loulan was. Also that lullaby at the end is one we've often heard Maomao's mother sing.

The asbestos controversy in France was crazy, with lobbies trying their hardest to delay the ban and minimize the health issues, until the 90s. But I don't know how dangerous it was for ancient people, it's only the particles you breathe that kill you slowly over time. Sometimes 30 years later. Considering the low exposition time and the fact that people rarely exceeded 50, I wonder if they considered it as deadly as we did. It was more or less known it could made people sick, but to what extent.

To be fair, hierarchy was no joke in ancient China. It would be unthinkable, and there would be no exception, for a servant girl to marry a prince like Jinshi. The only thing that makes this somewhat remotely possible, is that Maomao is from the La clan, daughter of Lakan. But she doesn't recognize him as her father. Even if all the higher ups know now. So yeah, Maomao's denial too. I don't know if you noticed Pairin's dialogue since you paused right there, but she was also like wondering why she's doing that.

I like how she sings her mom's lullaby to him despite how rocky that relationship is, guess it just stuck with her that much. But yeah, think the end of s2 raised your expectations of their relationship progress a bit much, by the end of s2 she does know that Jinshi clearly has feelings for her and while she doesn't push him away she really hasn't been reciprocating them at all. Her being raised in a brothel and neglected didnt really help her ability to form trusting relationships but she also made it clear throughout her life in the palace that she really would rather have an easy life as an apothecary which she knows cant be possible if she gets with Jinshi who she has confirmed is royalty. And while she thought serving Jinshi was fun and let her practice medicine more (which is why she went back after getting fired) it kinda ended horribly with more conflicts like her being kidnapped and one of her few friends being shot dead. At this point she appreciates who Jinshi is to her and everyone around them knows she has some feelings but she is stubborn and denying it as much as possible. And she really did think the brothel experience would reinvigorate him since that's how she was raised

honestly maomao has a lot of inner dialogue & just be staring sometimes with her big ol blue eyes. if I was jinshi I would kinda freak out. I think someone made a compilation of it somewhere too. its giving light x l when they just be staring and having inner dialogue when they interact with each other also with maomao notice how she teases him at first on whether or not jinshi can sleep alone but when he says he won't sleep alone her inner voice turns more serious. the va does a really good job there. i think she was teasing/testing him but then also lowkey was a bit disappointed that he didnt want to sleep alone. the thing with maomao is she's aware jinshi likes her. I mean he doesn't hide it that's for sure but idk if she takes how serious this "like" he has for her is. also hes really high up in status something she does NOT want. so even if she felt something for him she would suppress it. if she gets involved politically that would be a nightmare. she even believes that she left the feeling of love in her mother's womb (I think she mentions it in s1). overall I think it'll be a long while until we even see it being reciprocated. we've seen glimpses of it for sure & she calls him beautiful & heavenly like every ep but yeah. she does like him but is also heavily guarded. mind u she also grew up in a brothel so I think that also skews her view on love & relationships. she's not blind to it just realistic in her view of things. may seem harsh to jinshi but hey she's a woman in a tough time. I wouldn't want to be involved either even tho I desperately want them together FYI she's also singing her mother's lullaby

"Am I misremembering how we ended s2" - lol, this is absolutely the type of show where they wont actually get together until like 17 seasons from now.

I understand your frustration about the JaoJao ship situation but I really think thats just how MaoMao is, if you take her peculiar personality and also the social and history context it makes this weird situation in which she knows he likes her and she kind of like him but she will never admit that to herself and even if she did, she: 1) will try to repress it because to her(and to Jinshi) that would be "a bother" and 2)She has a different way of expressing care and affection which is not conventional at all. Now, I think Jinshi knows all of this, so the ball is in his court, does he still wanna play knowing how MaoMao is?
