W One Piece

Dreamknight942

W. One thing I’ll say about one pace for thriller bark is some parts are cut very badly with this arc so some things won’t make sense at times 😅 but it rounds out

Honeybadger

Thriller bark is so goofy that I never got scared once watching this. It's like a funny Halloween comedy show

Tsatsa

You can tell oda put so much into this arc but also has a lot of fun with it

S0ulSp4de

No I don't think I ever heard someone say this arc was scary. Actually there are not many anime that are somewhat scary. :D

Hisoka

"it's like we've been hit by 20 mysteries in a row", yeah all series, you just now noticed.

RCG

We only know Shanks and Whitebeard so far.

Ama No Murakumo

Great Reaction as always. So, some clarification / points of note from this batch of episodes and of some general lore: 1st, Sanji, as you surmised, was put in a generic / underling's body, because they didn't recognize him from his wanted poster ( continuing the gag of Sanji remaining mostly anonymous to the bad guys ) 2nd, Kaido is a name that has never been mentioned in the series before, so all we know, is that sometime in the past, Moria fought him in the New World ( the 2nd half of the grand line ) and lost, leading him to believe that if at that time he had Zombie subordinates of Oars' level, he wouldn't have lost, meaning that he must be somewhat strong. 3rd, So far, aside from the present time, there have been 5 major time periods of note: - Starting with 900-800 years ago the beginning and end of the Void Century where at its end, an ancient, unamed great kingdom was destroyed / defeated / disappeared, and coincidentally the World Government was founded ( as we have been told in the Ohara flashback ) and is the lost history period that Robin ( and the Ohara scholars ) is interested in, and what is presumably inscribed on the Poneglyphs, the esearch on which has been banned from the World Government. - 500 years ago, as mentioned in the last episode by Hogback, where Oars was feared as the Country-Puller and nicknamed The Demon ( the japanese word used is Majin, which can have MANY meanings depending on the kanji, some of which are Evil Person, Magic Person, Evil God, Magic God etc so Demon is a good enough translation ) - 400 years ago, where the events of the Calgara & Noland flashback occured ( in Skypeia ), where we learn through their interactions, that the Shandorans ( the original residents on Jaya, that were flung to the sky by the Knock-Up stream ) had a duty for the last 400 years to protect the Poneglyph that was embedded in their giant bell's bellfry, without even knowing what was written on it, until, in present day, Robin read it and informed their descendants Wyper etc ( and us ) that it provided the location of another Ancient Weapon bearing the name of a god, Poseidon ( but we haven't been informed of its location as an audience ) - 200-ish years ago, was when the big ship that fell on the crew at the start of Skypiea saga, the St. Briss, reached Skypiea, was for whatever reasons branded criminal and was sent cloud-soaring in a cut off small island cloud, drifting in the sky until in the present day fell on our crew - And finally, 22 years ago Gol D. Roger was caught and executed in his hometown of Loguetown in the East Blue, igniting the "fire" of the current Great Pirate Era and 20 years ago, the whole Ohara incident occured in Robin's backstory 4th, and final, as we have seen so far, there seem to be soem non-human races, such as Giants, and Fish-folk and Mer-folk, so, as Wes said, it's not far-fetched to surmise that there could be other races as well. Sorry for the long-ass post, but i love this series and it's lore and world building to death.

They have mentioned Kaido’s name before iirc, I believe it was Garp at the end of Ennies Lobby. I won’t say more because I don’t remember the exact words he used so I don’t want to accidentaly spoil.

Ama No Murakumo

They really haven't. All that was said there is that there are four pirates that kinda " reign " over the New World, dubbed " The Four Emperors ", and that Shanks and Whitebeard are 2 of them. Nothing more.

A Guy

Thriller bark has a special place in my heart, just due to the fact that it introduces Brook and serves as a cameo for some of Oda’s previous works specifically two prior protagonists.

Billbob

You know, the One Pace editing might be quite a bit more manic and disorienting at times but honestly enjoying this so much more than my original watch. Think this arc was 40 something episodes and was probably the first arc that really felt like a slog to get through personally.

so with Sanji, when his zombie was introduced, he was third. Sanji's running joke is "3". He's supposedly the third strongest in the crew, a part of his name "San" means 3 (i/e Ichi, Ni, San - one, two, three). Small little gags. W One Piece. It is chop weirdly but you get the general gist of this arc. When Nami told Lola she was a man, you can hear that she changed her accent/way of talking to Bon Clay (Mr. 2) from Alabasta as well. She was inspired by him. The whole "Friend" thing was the last thing he said before he sacrificed himself for the straw hats.

Gelondil

I'm not sure this adds any clarity, since this is a lot of extraneous information. Like, why are the Void Century and Skypeia being mentioned here, when it's not relevant to Thriller Bark? I feel like Wes and Steph already understand everything that is expected for them to know at this part in the story, and this infodump might just confuse them more.

25:35 The "weak" translation is perhaps a bit too direct. The word used in japanese is "kayowai" which basically means something closer to "delicate and cute"; it instills the idea of "needing protection". It's colloquially used as an attractive attribute for women, though perhaps somewhat archaic, with similar terms being used in the West in the past - especially in historical Romanticism contexts. But the word itself does indeed mean "weak" if directly translated. I've actually seen it be used for a guy, too, in a romance manga where the female lead is secretly a rough delinquent and is interested in the male lead who seems more bookish, though he is actually also secretly a rough delinquent lol. She uses that word for him in her inner monologue, thinking that he is much weaker than her, showing that she finds him cute and in need of protection. For context, they both pretend to be prim and proper, not showing their rough sides to each other, thinking that they are dating someone who is normal.

Ama No Murakumo

Mainly because of something they said along the lines of " we may get to find out more about what happened 500 years ago " and I took it as them referring to the Void century if they didn't then, my bad

LurkLum

42:45 In japanese the term "cat burglar" or "cat thief", doroboneko, is also synonymous with "homewrecker" 😅

Jaya

bro who did the subtitles they're so inaccurate :"(

AL

Trueee its more adventury than scary and just fits OP perfectly

Hey, once you finish Thriller Bark, you HAVE to watch Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation! It’s a one-shot Oda (the author of One Piece) drew back in the 90s, before One Piece was even a thing. Basically a one-chapter manga where he was messing around with ideas, and it got turned into a 25-minute anime special. It’s even sort of canon to One Piece, which makes it extra fun. Super easy watch. The reason I’m saying watch it right after Thriller Bark is that you’ll definitely recognize someone, and it’s so cool seeing where Oda first came up with some of this stuff. Not gonna spoil anything, but I think you’ll love it. Would be awesome to see your reaction!

RCG

This arc also probably has the most new characters with weird One Piece laughs. Aside from Blackbeard and the giants Dorry, Brogy and Saul, as well as Fukurou from CP9, we now also have Brook, Hogback, Perona and Moria on that list.

LynxedFables

wait, which manga is this, I need to know

LurkLum

Sorry I missed your reply! It's "two lovebirds are hiding their fangs" or "Koisuru Futari wa Kiba o Kakusu ~Gap ga Arisugiru Couple no Hanashi~"
