It's very difficult to follow along and keep it synced when you don't show at least a little of the actual show in the background, like you usually do... Please keep this in mind for the next one! The editing seems to differ slightly between my copy and the ones you're watching, so I need to see at least something otherwise I could be completely off..!

IThe AuthorityI

You may not have noticed. Don gives Sylvia money because he overhears her and Arnold fighting over money in the elevator.

Actuarial Lurker

SO Joe and Kevin- you guessed right at the end of Season 5 that Pete would use his NYC apartment for no good...

Actuarial Lurker

Loved how Don pitched the Local radio ads just the way the client "wanted"...its guaranteed to move metal- even used cars!....brilliant

Actuarial Lurker

In the pre-show you say you can feel for Pete due to the writing....bet you don't think that at the end...

Actuarial Lurker

I suspect the second half of the premiere last week was blocked hence the reposting and the lack of screen space

Actuarial Lurker

The show is heavy on Catholic guilt- Megan is Catholic French Canadian- Sylvia- Dons' new lover is Catholic, Peggy is Catholic and we deal with a welcomed miscarriage since an abortion was in the picture to save her acting career, adultery and Peggy betraying Stan's confidence and seeing herself becoming Don in trashing her subordinates...

Actuarial Lurker

The Dick flashback reveals even more how Don learns to equate intimacy with meaningless sex at a young age....there are more flashbacks don't worry

Actuarial Lurker

Trudy: "If you so much as open your fly to urinate I will destroy you"- epic, finally!!

Actuarial Lurker

For your end-discussion. Don is a sex addict, Pete is just bored

thank u next

I agree, we need to see at least a little of the outline so we can know if the scene is synched. I'm watching on Amazon Prime and whenever I get an ad, it throws me off on the episode timing after the ad finishes.

Actuarial Lurker

Peggy can't be Don..YET...the world is still too sexist for her to command the respect he did. I have relatives who were involved in law enforcement- and spousal abuse, sexual assault, serial killiers preying on women etc. escalated exponentially in the late 60s and early 70s with the "sexual revolution" as men in society used violence to "put women back in their place"- so to speak... We see that in the opening scene the three couples including Pete and Trudy have just seen the musical "Hair" that promotes "free love", which as always is historically on point since the show ran off Broadway from April 1967-January 1968 then ON Broadway in April 1968 and here we are in January 1968. But then the neighbor beats the crap out of his wife for cheating knowing Pete and Trudy won't call the police....that sets the context for Peggy reacting to the offensive revenge of her employees who might as well have put a used tampon on her desk....We saw in Season 4 that Peggy fired Joey for the sex cartoon of Joan "interacting" with Lane, and here we are a few years later and she is in charge and does nothing....The question is WHEN WILL Peggy be able to be truly in charge?

Youtalkingtome

Yes, we did catch that. Just showing the scene of his childhood in the brothers before hand made it seem transactional

Youtalkingtome

I really hope she reaches a point where she is. I know that her committing to her work life is causing her to make sacrifices but watching her rise has been one of the most compelling parts of the show

heheheheheh

Sylvia orders Don steak Diavolo. He is the devil she's committing carnal sin with.

Chris

One option would be to add a digital clock or timestamp

Weird Magic

Favorite female character in Mad Men? Betty Joan Megan Peggy Trudy Originally airing on April 14, 2013, 'Collaborators' is Episode 3 of Season 6 of Mad Men. It is the 68th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.8, placing it as the #11 ranked episode of this season and #59 out of all the episodes shown so far. I vote Trudy :)

Weird Magic

This issue seems to have started since the move from the imbedded youtube videos were replaced with the current situation

Robert Bauman

Thought you guys made a great point during the intro regarding Don's appearance not changing as most of the other characters have. Seems to symbolize that, despite the fact that the world/culture is evolving, as well as his coworkers, Don is still unchanged. While on the surface a lot is different in his life since Season 1 - new wife, new apartment, new title at work - he is still fundamentally the same broken person repeating the same mistakes over and over.

Thanks for the shout out! I'm happy to be here and since you're going to do The Wire, I'll definitely be sticking around for a while.

Henrique Jambu

i'll admit i'm the biggest bob benson defender, i swear he's a nice person, we just don't see much of them on this show lol loved trudy's scene so much, she stablished her power over pete so quickly, it was so satisfying

Actuarial Lurker

As a current Left-Wing Jesuit-leaning Catholic there is less guilt and more redemption in my formation....

Actuarial Lurker

It's interesting to watch you speculate as to how Peggy and her role in Ted's firm will play out during Season 6. Don certainly stole all her thunder and then hiring Ginsburg led to him doing all the work at the expense of OCD over Heinz Beans where that client viewed her talking back as similar to his own "rude teen daughter"

Actuarial Lurker

Peggy then Trudy...we don't get enough Trudy character development- at least so far....to the show's detriment

Actuarial Lurker

Bob is a force to be reckoned with....sufficeiently vague as to pique interest!

tom

Lol might be better to let them make up their own mind before putting things in their head

tom

Trudy is a very interesting character to me because she's a unique example of a female character in this show that actually likes the feminine confines she is born into. And she wouldn't see them as confines: we never see her yearning for something greater, struggling with a lack of agency, wanting a career or independence. She was living the life she wanted, Pete simply broke the contract by cheating and so she stood up for herself. It's a long time coming, and I think it may seem very sudden for people who underestimated Trudy, but from the start it's very clear she's had a handle on the marriage.

tom

I like the different layers and euphemisms there are with the Don and Sylvia scenes. The first thing Sylvia says after they sleep together is "I feel bad" but she's talking about something else entirely, just a financial thing with dinner. Because we saw them after the affair has already started, they're both coping decently with whatever guilt they would be feeling, or they're not feeling it at all. It's ironic because guilt and shame is so mixed into the dynamic that it's probably part of why they started cheating in the first place.

tom

I wasn't sure at first if you missed the initial line of Megan saying she had a miscarriage rather than she was pregnant

tom

I love the continuity in this show, referring to Peggy's blowup at the Heinz client and how there's still repercussions from that, however small

Youtalkingtome

I love Joan. She's one of my favorite characters period. However I love all the women on the show. Megan is incredible. Trudy shows how strong she is and has been in this episode. Peggy is so freaking cool. Betty sucks most of the time but she's still a very interesting character who I can't take my eyes off every time she's on screen.

Youtalkingtome

Yes. Man out of time. I wonder if his appearance will change at all during the show. Part of me hopes it won't but I'm game for whatever this show throws our way.

Youtalkingtome

We know that something is up with this guy. We've seen him a couple times now and he is a bit of a kiss ass. Kenny not really liking him rubs me the wrong way. I already have my guard up with his character

Youtalkingtome

So obviously cheating is bad. I hate to see Don cheat. Out of all the affairs Don has had, this dynamic is very interesting to watch unfold. It's so close to home in a literal sense. You feel bad for both spouses. This could be very melodramatic, which I'm fine with. However, trusting the show I think this will go in an interesting direction

Youtalkingtome

Continuity is so important to this show. All the baggage that these characters have, come with them season after season. It's incredible

tom

It's a tough call because I have them on and sometimes the subtitles spoil a line like 5 seconds before the character says it

tom

RE: Ketchup. It's a bit callous, but this is how I see the it: Ken shouldn't have told Stan, and Stan shouldn't have told Peggy. But Peggy's only mistake was not realizing that Ted would run with it. I won't say it's not a little scummy, but can we say Don would do any different?

tom

Lately it's been Joan for me, but I'm inclined to say Betty. My issue is I get trapped in my own head, when I think about a character suddenly they're the deepest character in the whole show just by virtue of them being less talked about. I suppose it's a good thing to have an affinity for the underrated characters, but the downside is sometimes it makes me think of Peggy or Don as a bit more straightforward/boring. Imagine that! So it's a good thing these guys talk about Don so much, sort of anchors me a little.

tom

They talk about mundane things like dinners, their talk about their neighbors and family, they go out to dinner, they lend each other books. Because of the dynamic, it's probably the closest to a real couple out of all of Don's affairs, but that also makes it the sleaziest and perhaps most immoral. Whenever they interact and are happy it's inherently interesting because it necessitates both characters having some form of cognitive dissonance. S6 is possibly my favorite, and I think Sylvia and Don have a lot to do with it for me. It's just very contemplative and as you alluded to not afraid to go to dark places, what with the allusion to a transactional service. We also get immediate deep reflections on Don compared to S5 where he took more of a back seat for the other characters to flourish. This is my first watch of the show after realizing this about S6, so I'm making these connections at the same time as you guys.

Jesus

Don def is not faking any of his feelings thats the most brilliant part of all of this. Also in that scene in Pete’s office when Bob walks in and has that small convo, the direction to have Bob step to his right and frame his dark suit against the frosted window. Props Jon Hamm.

Robert Bauman

Herb from Jaguar is my least favorite character on the show. Just the absolute worst. I'm not a big fan of Dan at this point in the series but watching him sabotage that pitch was so enjoyable.

Youtalkingtome

Herb is a garbage person. Watching him sabotage the pitch was like the writers winking at us. They know we all hate him and it was very satisfying to see

Scott Pearson Eberly

This script is extremely underrated. Weiner talked about wanting to do an episode on unspoken rules on not what the letter of the law says, but rather the spirit of the law and how you get around these agreements. The agreement between Don and Sylvia, Pete’s affair with Brenda showed us the unspoken agreement Trudy had with Pete and the apartment. He broke it by getting sloppy with a neighbor which broke Trudy’s #1 rule. The best was Herb’s demand and how Don found a way to tank it and Herb having no idea Don did it on purpose. All these rules changing daily is enough to make one’s head hurt. I’ll have an Old-Fashioned!

Youtalkingtome

You could teach this in a screen writing class. When I took it, we mostly broke down movies and a couple episode of tv. The X Files actually lol. I would have loved to break this one down
