"Erin's man" that Michelle is talking about when she enters the house is Hugh Grant. She tells the storyline of 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and the woman in the dress with the safety pins is Elizabeth Hurley, with whom Grant was in a relationship with at the time. The story she's referring to is when Grant got arrested for hiring a sex worker.

It is a true story that Michelle is telling! She's talking about Hugh Grant and she's describing Four Weddings and a Funeral to the others to try to get them to get it.

Loved the reaction guys! As a brit I can tell you that James's accent has always been completely English, no Irish hint to his accent at all. In the first episode, Michelle mentioned that James's mum moved to England (to get an abortion but she chose to keep the baby in the end) so James was definitely born in England. I don't think it is ever explicitly stated but as far as I'm aware James didn't come back to Ireland until the first episode of the show. In this episode I wouldn't say James was trying to act more English but was just acting hypermasculine to try and fit in with the 'lads' because he doesn't have many male friends and so doesn't know how to act around them. He tries to overcompensate too much and ends up coming off as really cringey and clearly fails to fit in. One of my favourite scenes is when he tries to act super masculine when asking if his partner would be his buddy, which fails, so he says "will you be my buddy please".

The slang he used was English but I'd say it was more slang used by 'lads', so he was using it in an attempt to fit in but it clearly doesn't translate well to the Northern Irish protestants as it probably is used more widely in England

Thank you for this! That information is really helpful. We had completely forgotten that James had been in England since birth, so of course his accent is completely English.

No worries at all! To be honest it is only really subtly mentioned. Because of how fast paced this show is with so much going on it can take many watches to pick up everything that is going on

So there's a LOT of background information at the start of this episode. Part 1: Gerry Adams was the leader of Sinn Fein, the more extreme of two political parties associated with Republicanism, and hence also the IRA. In fact Sinn Fein had several people elected as Members of [the British] Parliament, but since they didn't recognize that authority, they refused to take their seats. Gerry Adams was famously (allegedly) a former member of the IRA, and he lead the new approach of "the ballot box and the bomb", a two-pronged strategy to end British rule of Ulster. Part of the terror strategy were attacks on the mainland (Harrods, Warrington, etc). When sh*t got too real, the British government decided to cut off Sinn Fein from broadcasting their political message, the phrase "deny them the oxygen of publicity" became famous. The problem was that this move completely backfired. Sinn Fein was overtly peaceful and political, even if they had very close links to the IRA, so this outraged other politicians, the media, and most ordinary folks. So although it was against the law (more or less) to broadcast Gerry Adams' speeches, an easy work around was to simply dub his words with someone that sounded just like him. Pretty soon the restriction was reversed, since MORE people were listening to Gerry Adams than before! :D

Background info Part Deux: + Michael Parkinson and Terry Wogan were HUGE talk show hosts back in the day, very, very good at their jobs. Wogan also hosted the Eurovision song contest for some years. Here's a quick taster of Parky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9RLQf7vhr0 But Parkinson is also famous for being the butt of Kenny Everett's Cupid Stunt* character's sketches, absolutely brilliant / insane...and all done in the best possible taste. :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJXpvyTzjoE *try saying that over and over very fast... ;)

Background Part The Third: The most famous hardline political (non-violent) Loyalist Unionist Protestant was the Reverend Ian Paisley. This sketch (from around the same time that Derry Girls is set) captures how he (and the Loyalist movement) were largely seen by mainlanders as ridiculously intransigent (and I'm sure the mainlanders were seen as weak and naive in return). That in turn speaks to the weird divide between the Unionists and the community that they were loyal to. "William Ulsterman" is a thinly-veiled spoof of Ian Paisley. And the other party guest is likewise Gerry Adams. Great stuff. :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxpYW_w5pgo

Thank you for sharing this! I love that you guys can explain and add a lot more context to the show, I honestly can say the only Hugh Grant movie I've seen is Two Weeks Notice. I know. It's terrible but my mom loved that movie. Would love to check out some of the big ones.

Further to Adam's excellent info, I'd say that James is intended to come off as fairly posh (him being from southern England is no accident). James has clearly never hung with the cool lads he is trying to present himself as.
