Quality program

Great addition. The first three seasons are among the best comedy shows of all time. Would also recommend veep if neither of you have seen that yet.

Milana

Yay! Been thinking about watching it for a while and now I get to watch it for the first time with you guys!

Derek Bartnett

Also wanted to note that “the next time on” at the end of the episode is a bit and not actually what’s on the next episode.

Sydney Frasure

I am so excited you’re watching Arrested Development!!! Now I have The Good Place, 30 Rock, and Arrested Development to watch with you! I have rewatched all of those series several times but it’s so much fun to see you experience them for the first time!

Chris

Great show!

Sydney Frasure

I probably agree with the decision to leave out the last two seasons but I have to say, I definitely disagree that they’re pure garbage and that watching them will ruin the show for you. They are definitely not as good as the previous seasons but I really don’t think they’re terrible. However, I do find myself in the position of defending unpopular seasons of tv shows all the time (like the last two seasons of The Office lol) so take it for what you will.

Another patron super excited for you guys to watch this show. It was ahead of its time in being a really smart, sharp comedy. It failed at its time because mass audiences weren't ready for it and the Fox network didn't know what to do with it. Academic studies have been done showing it was one of the most joke-dense shows ever (even more than 30 Rock, I think)! And it really rewards you for paying attention. Re-watching it brings out more jokes/callbacks than anyone could even catch the first time. I could go on for paragraphs. :) Looking forward to getting deeper into it... even season 4 maybe, if we can convince you when you get that far. The development (and later re-development) of Season 4 is a story unto itself.

Like others, really excited you're starting this show. The cast is incredible, but most of them weren't known figures back in the early 2000s. Ironically, Portia de Rossi was one of the better-known cast members for her role in Ally McBeal and even people like David Cross were more known as being comedians rather than being actors. This is the Firefly of comedies on Fox. And while they didn't actively try to kill it in the same way, it still ended way too soon.

Peter

Yes, Ron Howard narrates every episode.

Peter

"I love all my children equally" *earlier that day* "I don't care for GOB" Jokes in almost every episode have become memes. Most of them from Lucile, who is by far the best character. Jessica Walter is a goddess of comedy.

JVTrickypants

Side note, the “next time on…” is never really about the next episodes, just extra jokes.

Jonathan

Jason Bateman starred in a couple 80s sitcoms. One that changed names and time slots multiple times and after the show had gotten cancelled had the guts to have a main character die of AIDS on a family sitcom in 1990.

DelGuy03

I kind of agree that seasons 4 and 5 aren't QUITE as terrible as they're sometimes described, but they're definitely well below the level of the first three. They're still clever, but not funny. So I agree with the plan to react to only the FOX seasons.

DelGuy03

I love that you're doing the show! But it's a challenge for Reactors, because part of the deal is that you have to say something, or you're not really reacting. And yet every word you say is likely to cover up one of those high-speed jokes. In fact, I think you handled the challenge rather well in the pilot!

Youtalkingtome

Maybe we'll watch them in our free time if we really dig the show. I don't hate the last two seasons of The Office as much as Kevin does, but I could definitely live without them.

Youtalkingtome

Wow, I'm gunna have to do some deep diving. I can see how this would be jarring if there was nothing like it. I loved this pilot and if we weren't doing it for the channel, I would binge it.

Youtalkingtome

Firefly is another show I hope we get to do at some point. Never seen Ally McBeal but I know RDJ was on it. David Cross might be one of my favorite comedians

Shannon Schwartz

I've watched this series more times than I'm proud to admit, but with Season 4, I remember watching it the first time wasn't great, but watching it the 2nd time was fantastic once I knew the story line. Just like with the prior seasons, I found that rewatching made many of the jokes even funnier and uncovered other jokes I missed the first time.

Jeff

I first saw Jeffrey Tambor over forty years ago on "Hill Street Blues" where he played an attorney who later became a judge. His character was eccentric and bizarre, and he provided some frequent comic relief throughout the entire series.

Shannon Schwartz

There are some good Ron Howard jokes built in later as well, related to things WAY back in his very early showbiz career.

Roland Cooke

There's some earlier Ianucci DNA that might be worth watching ahead ahead of VEEP, 23 episodes of The Thick Of It and the movie In The Loop.

N

Oh my god yes

Ben M.

Firefly and Serenity are definitely worth the watch when you get the chance. And David Cross can bring it as a comedian.

Roland Cooke

"That was a neat callback". I'm pretty sure that won't be the last time we hear you guys say that... 😉

Michael Manville

Not my favorite comedy (The Good Place, Community), but definitely my #1 funniest comedy personally.

Kevin L

Amazing and unique show! So glad you're doing it. Jeffrey Tambor's prior great TV role was a SUPERB performance on The Larry Sanders Show, Garry Shandling's hugely influential single-camera-style HBO comedy that every actor wanted to be part of.

Kevin L

Oh yes indeed! Shandling's a late-nite host, Tambor and Rip Torn are amazing as his sidekick and manager; backstage strife and neurotic personal life intercut with glossy 'onstage' bits with many actors playing versions of themselves. Major influence on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ricky Gervais' shows Office and Extras, and 30 Rock.
