The show does address what happens to Sam, but I wouldn't hold your breath for the answer.

“I’m Marion Cotesworth-Haye!!!” Allison Janney deserves an extra Emmy just for her laughing in this episode.

Even though there are things I'm meh about in this episode, I still never skip it and it's mostly because of the Francis Scott Key Key! That is one of the top three funny moments of the whole show for me -- along with the Butterball Hotline and POTUS high on painkillers. Amy's deadpan delivery is so perfect and she and Allison and Josh work so well together in that scene.

I’ve been waiting for you to get to this episode since you started S4 BECAUSE of that scene with Marion Coatsworth-Hay! I agree that it’s the funniest scene in the show so far. Hoooly cow. The silent communication between Amy and Will. (“Francis Scott Key??” “It’s the Francis Scott Key key”)

My take on why Rob Lowe left - others may disagree but I've seen/read a lot of stuff and I'm pretty sure this is correct. They got him in at the last minute for the Pilot, and it was all about money. Rob Lowe knew what he was worth, and he (or he had his agent) put the screws to them to get the most before Season 1 started. I do not begrudge him for this, I think you get what you can in everything you do - most of us would do the same. But that meant that the ensemble started out "uneven" in pay from the jump. After being so successful the first couple years - NBC (rightfully) decided to up the pay for everybody each year...but....because Rob started out so much higher than the rest, he didn't get as much of a raise with the success of the show as the others did. NBC (again rightfully so IMO) knew this was an ensemble cast and wanted to get everybody closer together in pay. Needless to say, Mr. Lowe didn't agree with this line of thinking and tried to use his leverage (again) to get the same percentage raises as the rest of the cast. Eventually NBC called his bluff and had him written off the show. The weird part of this is that - everybody handled it professionally. They all knew what was happening, nobody begrudged anybody else for any of it - it was all just business decisions for everybody involved (NBC/Sorkin/Lowe/the entirety of the rest of the ensemble) and everybody was fine with everybody else's decisions. It was just business...

One of my favorite episodes of the series. It's very much a "ship in a bottle" episode. Mini storylines that basically say "This is how Amy's first day went. This is how every day is" But it so damn funny. Between CJ's masterclass at comedy, and Will giving Amy the idea for the award. Not to mention the props gags and the incredible acting of the Marblehead scene. The butler is the best part. Best episode of the season. And top 5 overall in my opinion (I count the part 1 and 2s as 1) And... It shows that Will is on the team.

I never really thought about it until I listened to the podcast episode for this one, but think of how hard it is to fake laugh - especially to that extent - and make it seem believable and not too over-the-top. Allison Janney is phenomenal.

Well if you guys like this kind of "contained" episode you're sure gonna love next weeks. I like these kind of episodes even in rewatch. I find them fun and still laugh out loud like you guys did for Marion Coatsworth Haye. The CJ goes back to high school is 1 of maybe 3 episodes, of the total number of episodes, that I dont mind missing on my rewatches. That episode specifically is just a little too depressing for me. And I 2nd The Insider recommendation. Excellent movie.

Nobody I know passes over this one...when people think of West Wing episodes, they usually talk Two Cathedrals. When they talk about specific moments in the show, it's usually The Jackal or "I'm Marion Coatsworth Hay!" :) :) :) The actress - Helen Slayton-Hughes also played Ethel Beavers in Parks and Rec in 11 episodes, eventually April and Andy adopted her as their grandmother. She also has a credit for Arrested Development, I know you just started that show. Ms. Slayton-Hughes passed away in Dec 2022. Originally airing on March 26, 2003, 'Privateers' is Episode 18 of Season 4 of The West Wing. It is the 84th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.5, placing it as the #23 ranked episode of this season and #83 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Martin Nicholls

I've said it before but he says why in his book, and I don't think he's a liar - he says it's because he was supposed to be a bigger character with more major roles when it was all first put together. Which makes sense - you take Martin Sheen out and reduce him to what was originally intended and he's the star in a lot of ways, add to that I think Sorkin felt more comfortable writing Josh and Toby than he originally intended and you can see why his role collapsed into something less than it was supposed to be (even if only in his mind). Then yes, in effect he ends up not earning as much as he would have either. Also I get the impression it wasn't *super* professional on set when all of that was going on - but at least it was publicly and I guess that's all you can hope for. He then went off and actually starred in another show called The Lyon's Den which only about me and three other people watched (which is a shame because it was actually pretty good).

At a previous workplace of mine, every so often one of us would randomly walk into a room and proclaim "I"M MARION COTESWORTH-HAYE!!" It never gets old.

Youtalkingtome

I get that it's just business. The show is so good you forget what its real purpose is. To make NBC a lot of money. I don't blame him at all or NBC. Sam wasn't the main star but I will miss seeing him

Youtalkingtome

The Insider rocks. I love the CJ episode. It's really up there for me. Really looking forward to next week since that's the case

Youtalkingtome

RIP to her. That was a great moment on the show and I'm sure when we get to her on AD, we'll recognize her! This episode rules.

Please sit back and enjoy the journey. We have three upcoming episodes that will culminate in what I believe is the best season finale for the series, consisting of 2 parts.

Jack

For me the moment is Josh's "I went up to the Hill. Wearing, by the way, the new shoes you got me." - the slapstick humour was just so out-of-place in the West Wing but worked so well.

JVTrickypants

This is definitely a strong episode and well respected (and quoted) in many ways. I think there's a Francis Scott Key...Key t-shirt out there somewhere lol

JVTrickypants

So since only other West Wing folk would get this: I typed Man vs Bear and my phone autocorrected it to Mandy vs Bear. Bear...definitely bear.

Love this episode! I agree that Marion Coatesworth-Haye is the funniest scene of the series!

I do know you guys are planning to listen to the podcast, but this is a moment I want to clarify that even though I'm fairly poor, I would happily help pay for us listening to you guys listening to The West Wing Weekly podcast. This episode reminded me of that because Allison Janney (and Carol lol) comes on fairly often (think even when she was winning the Oscar and other Emmys). On the podcast of this episode Joshua Malina remembering this moment asked her "How the hell are you able to laugh that convincingly for take after take?" She goes into detail about how she does it by somewhat/somehow hyperventilating - she obviously explains it better. Though still love how Joshua Malina (which this was a good episode of his) would introduce Allison onto the podcast: "Between the two of us, we have 1 Oscar and 7 Emmys...."

Youtalkingtome

We laughed so hard at that part. It was staged so well. We saw her reaction coming from a mile away but it was still so perfect.

jimmy2k4o .

Small correction but it always bothered me. Amy said that Josh doesn’t have a reproductive system and he agreed. He does have a reproductive system. well half of one, and women have the other half. If she wanted to demonstrate her experience based opinion, She should have pointed out that men don’t get pregnant. But men do have a reproductive system.

Katie

I always watch this episode, CJ cracking up laughing still gets me even after watching it many times. It's just a fun watch. Plus I love any episode with Abby
