I am so, so, so, SO happy you guys did not watch the director's cut - it becomes an inferior movie - the theatrical cut is damn near perfect. ❤️

Chris H.

When Tom Hanks was bringing this to production, the challenge went out as a sort of open call to songwriters/composers/musicians that they needed a song that sounded like it could be a mid-1960s hit pop single with just the right amount of garage-y rough edges. The late, great Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne, Ivy) won and got the song into the movie. And it works the magic trick of being a song you have to hear a gajillion times in the movie but (hopefully) not get sick of. One band that The Oneders are VERY loosely based on, is a real band from New Jersey called The Knickerbockers. Their big one-hit wonder single was "Lies", which for a few exciting months teenybopper magazines and radio djs wondered aloud if it was actually The Fab Four themselves recording under a new name. (It wasn't, and when photos revealed them as a bunch of mid-30s, portly dudes in a lounge band that kinda ended the "It might be the Beatles!11!" nonsense.)

I might have to delete this comment if y'all do IMDB at the end of the watchalong, but Ethan Embry is probably best remembered for Can't Hardly Wait. If you fellas haven't seen Can't Hardly Wait, please add it to the to-watch list. ❤️

I'm not. I synched up to watch and then suddenly they were completely out of synch. That's when I saw that my video was 40 minutes longer than theirs.

I am curious about the Directors Cut. I don't know if it's available to stream or if it's a blu ray situation. How is it different from the theatrical?

Youtalkingtome

I knew it sounded like Fountains of Wayne! He's worked on so much stuff, I'm glad my hunch was right. RIP to Schlesinger. We loved his work on Crazy Ex Girlfriend as well.

Charlize's part was cut down considerably & with good reason. She's a phenomenal actress now... but then? 😬 They also cut a scene that implied Mr. White was 🏳️‍🌈 & a couple of pre-meteoric-rise gigs.

Tom Everett Scott almost didn't get cast in this because everyone thought he looked *too much* like Tom Hanks. I really love the music and yeah, I think it's all original songs (Tom Hanks actually wrote the "Mr. Downtown" song and the Chantrellines' song "Hold My Hand, Hold My Heart").

The song "That Thing You Do" was a big hit on the radio and was nominated for an Academy Award for best song. Tom Hanks used the success of the movie to launch an actual Playtone Records label, which has been used to release music from other films and tv shows, including "The Sopranos." When I first saw this in the nineties, I didn't realize how many cameos Tom Hanks sneaked into his movie, including his son Colin in a nonspeaking role. Peter Scolari was a very busy actor, with regular guest spots in films and on tv shows, including a season 3 episode of "The West Wing". Sadly, he passed away in 2021 at age 66 after battling leukemia for two years. I don't recall if you've both seen "Band of Brothers", produced by Hanks and Stephen Spielberg. If not, that would be a great one for your channel.

I have to say, I've really come to appreciate both of you even more after hearing you mention The Monkees. Their music has always held a special place in my heart. It's interesting to think that Tom Scott Everett almost missed out on his first movie role because he resembled Tom Hanks. Thankfully, Rita, Tom's wife, saw something special in him and thought he was quite charming. Life works in mysterious ways!

I love that you picked up on Fountains of Wayne / Adam Schlesinger so quickly. Impressive. He wrote a lot of great songs. Unfortunately we lost Adam to Covid in 2020.

I saw Peter Scolari onstage in New York on a number of occasions; he was always great (and we even had a nice backstage conversation once). It's true that his screen career didn't take off the way Tom Hanks's did, but if you look up his extensive filmography it's clear that he still did very well.

Johnathon Schaech has actually had a very solid film career, about comparable with Tom Everett Scott's. Admittedly not in terribly high-profile stuff, but he still works constantly.

This movie was the first time I became aware of the name Adam Schlesinger. I was stunned by how accurately he nailed the sound of a lively, catchy song of the mid-1960s that's destined to catch on big for a few months and then fade away. (It would be just as harmful to make it TOO good, as not good enough.) He was the master of musical pastiche, as we also now know from CXG -- 157 winners over 4 years. The four actors went into training to look convincingly like they were playing their instruments (only Zahn and Emery had some prior experience). Of course, the actual sounds, both instrumental and vocal, were pre-recorded by pros.

Joy M

Schaech was married to Christina Applegate at one time.

I’m so glad y’all like this. I was afraid you’d find it corny.

Thank you for this! I haven't watched this movie in fifteen years at least and I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting it. And it reminds me that I have the soundtrack somewhere on cd, PLUS a few years ago I saw a dvd of the director's cut on Amazon and bought it, but never watched it. Hey, did you catch that the Ethan Embry's character didn't really get a name? They always just refer to him as "the bass player" and in the little bio at the end of the movie he's called T.B. Player.

Of all the films/series that have a band/singer being discovered scene, it’s THAT THING YOU DO! that nails it!

Youtalkingtome

I had no idea he could write music! That's really cool. You can tell this movie was a real labor of love. They should really do a DNA test. Hanks is for sure the father lmao.

Youtalkingtome

I haven't! It would be a good one to do. That's why I've seen Playtone. I was wondering why it was so familiar

Youtalkingtome

I knew it had to be him. The sound was so specific. I don't know if it's because we watched CXG or because I love Fountains of Wayne. I'm glad we could watch another project he was apart of.

Youtalkingtome

They really did. This is such a great movie and it makes me want another Hanks directed film....on the other hand Larry Crowne exists....

Paul T Hewes

there are also extended scenes of the Bass Player and the singer from the Chantrellines together while they are on the fair tour. This includes a scene where Guy walks into the bassists hotel room to find the singer in the the bassists bed.

Paul T Hewes

"Uncle Bob" is Chris Issak of "Wicked Game" fame... -Anita of the Rick and Anita movie is the same actress as Betty Spaghetti in "A League of Their Own"

Paul T Hewes

"Larry Crowne" is a sweet movie. its not complicated or deep, but its like a soft serve cone that can be satisfying on the right day...

Yep, this movie was written and directed by Tom Hanks, in his debut. The score was written by Hanks, Adam Schlesinger, and Howard Shore. The guy who played the bass player's replacement 'Wolfman' is actually the bass player from the band, Air Supply! Collin Hanks had a non-speaking part in this movie. He was the usher who brought Liv Tyler to her seat at the Hollywood Television Showcase! Chris Ellis who played the band's first manager, was also in Armageddon (1998) with Liv Tyler right after this movie! There's a director's cut to this movie which is fantastic! You guys definitely need to see it! The title song made it to #21 on Billboard Top 100! When Tom Hanks got his Kennedy Center Honors in 2014, the song, 'That Thing You Do' was performed by Pentatonix!

I love the director's cut of this movie! You should definitely check it out! There are even a few music videos that were made for the songs in the movie, but the only place I've seen them is after the end credits on the VHS tape I had of this movie in 1996! None of the DVD or Blu-ray releases have them.
