Saw a few episodes of this when it first came out and have always meant to come back to it. This is hopefully what will help me to do it. I've done 3 eps of Fallout and have not liked it much, not much of a gamer either. Space camp in 6th grade sounds like it would be really cool. The Right Stuff is an alltime fave of mine and I proably watched the movie Space Camp(1986) a dozen times when I was a little kid in late 80s. HBO and tom hanks did a scripted mini series encompassing virtually the entire space race titled From the Earth to the Moon in late 90s which, like The RIght Stuff, I consider a must watch for any fellow space nerds. earth to the moon is phenomenal really. Great actors and excellent quality . Next to Band of Brothers as maybe the best mini series ever made imo. Peak HBO era.

Always wanted to watch this show but never have. Looking forward to following along.

I like Fallout but probably because I love the games so much, especially Fallout: New Vegas. Haven’t seen From the Earth to the Moon. Sounds like something I’d enjoy.

It's an excellent show, good choice.

They just announced some kind of a spin-off / prequel / parallel-quel(?!) show that appears to be from the Russian POV. It's an intriguing idea, and they have a (ahem) stellar grounding already.

FAM is a fun show that makes you think about what could have happened. The major point of divergence from the real timeline was in 1966 when Sergei Korolev (Soviet head of the rocket program) survived a surgery instead of dying. While some things may be similar, or there are sometimes events that would be considered our X event, the FAM timeline branched off and is it's own version. You saw some of it in this episode, but they are a bit fluid with the flow of time. Space is big, and progress is too slow for it to be running real time for the entire season.

Kevin's insomnia is likely the reason he didn't spot the huge reveal that was the episode title. 🤣

What I found very strange and interesting about watching this show initially is that some of the real people being depicted in fictional situations are still alive, so they can watch this and see themselves doing things they never did. When you see an alternate history thing about the Civil War or Ancient Rome or something, those people are long gone.

Hadn’t heard of this before either (despite loving sci-fi) so it took a few episodes for me to jump in with you — but after this I’m so happy and excited to do so! As a fellow “sleep disaster”, I love and understand your urge to do this at [redacted] o’clock! Good luck with that! Watching TWW with you has shown me that your knowledge of US history is several magnitudes higher than mine, which makes me extra glad to have your thoughts on this! I wouldn’t have noticed the Kennedy thing.

“What becomes of the broken hearted” they all sing after getting to bar. It’s a perfect metaphor for the show. The show explores what becomes of the broken hearted.

I say “it’s a show that makes you nostalgic for the past, frustrated by the present and optimistic about the future” Man in the high castle shows a world worse than our and FAM shows a better one.

Loved how you noticed the Ted Kennedy thing……. It makes logical sense and it’s mind boggling that a fluke can save Mary Jo kapechne’s life and Ted Kennedy’s career. But if Kennedy wasn’t disgraced then he wouldn’t stay in the senate and do the great work he did for children’s health care.

Fun fact: the 1202 alarm that goes off during the simulation really went off during Neil descent to the moon. Great Easter egg

He did say “failure is not an option” In the Apollo 13 movie Because gene krantz autobiography is called “failure is not an option” First time I watched it I said it in unison with him because I could tell he was building up to it. It was a great moment even if the actor for gene looks quite young. He also played the flight director Chris craft (gene’s predecessor) in the tv show “mercury”

I love how Neil repeats Ed’s words on the moon “we had a rough start but decided to pick ourselves up and get back to work” It’s the “one small step for a man” of this show. It’s the theme and the attitude. Then “what becomes of the broken hearted” plays again for the astronauts. The start of the episode asked the question asked “what becomes of the broken hearted” and end of the episode ends it.

The lady that died in Ted Kennedy’s car was not a “professional” she was a political operative that worked high up in Bobby Kennedy’s 68 campaign. Her name was Mary Jo kapecne, she was Catholic and made her career fighting for liberal causes. I don’t mean to sound rude but I think how you described her is a bit misleading and disrespectful. In many ways she was denied justice, Kennedy left her in a flooded car and didn’t report it for over 10 hours. The person who discovered the car and examined Ms kapecne said she asphyxiated in the air bubble in the car, meaning if Ted reported it right away she would have lived. The Kennedy’s managed to convince the parents of Mary Jo to avoid an autopsy, fearing it would reveal that she was alive for hours in the car before the air ran out. Anybody else would be charged with manslaughter but not Kennedy. He did great work in the senate but to me that doesn’t excuse the negligent homicide. A innocent man going to jail is a horrible injustice but a guilty man not is just some trivia about him that people vaguely remember. They say the Kennedy dynasty died that day. She was a respectable dignified lady. People hypothesize that they were having an affair as if that matters. You should watch “chappaquidick” with Jason Clarke Great movie there’s a bit were Ted disappoints his cousin by refusing to resign and says “Peter betrayed Jesus, Moses had a temper, I’ve got chappaquidick” and his cousin replies “Moses did have a temper but he never left a girl at the bottom of the Red Sea” The movie cleverly shows different versions of what Ted did after the accident because he kept changing his story. They bring in McNamara, Sorensen and all the Kennedy people to do damage control. When Ted proposes an idea McNamara sighs and said “Ted you make me long for the days of the Cuban missile crisis”. Because Ted is a f*ck up and an idiot…..according to the film.

True! I was kind of thinking about Gene Kranz specifically, and something that happens to him a little later in the season.
