The significance of the date in the title is the speech that Reagan made at the end. He was speaking to the National Association of Evangelicals and called the Soviet Union "the evil empire" and "the focus of evil in the modern world." To make such statements at the height of the cold war was irresponsible and terrifying. While I'm impressed they're showing characters attending EST seminars, for they were an element of that era, I do feel the need to point out a major inaccuracy. Those seminars weren't open meetings that anyone could just drop in on. A family member of mine once did the introductory two-weekend seminar and it cost $700, the equivalent of $2000 today. Every meeting and seminar was very expensive. EST was a huge money-making scheme, convincing its followers that spending thousands of dollars was the only way to prove they "valued themselves", thus destroying many people economically. I don't think Phillip or Sandra had that kind of cash lying around. On a personal note, I want to share an experience that isn't really relevant but I just find oddly coincidental. When I was sixteen I lived for a year as an exchange student in Helsinki, Finland, which borders what was then the Soviet Union. I got the chance to travel with some other students into Russia for a week. I was in Moscow in February, 1983, one month before this episode takes place, and had a great time being a tourist. The place was beautiful and the people were welcoming and friendly, despite the obvious tensions between our respective governments. When I first watched this a few years ago, I was really hoping that Elizabeth and Paige would travel all the way into Russia so I could say "I was there!! Right before them!!", but alas, fiction and reality did not intersect this time.

I have written down that in episode three, Joe said with 100% certainty Nina was not going to last another episode...(I didn't write them down, but Martha has been mentioned in that vain multiple times as well :)) In this episode Kevin said with 100% certainty there was no way Paige would tell Pastor Tim... You two are two of the smartest people I've ever watched react to shows - if The Americans can continue to subvert expectations (*cough* Chekov's gun *cough*) this is going to be a VERY fun ride the rest of the way for you guys! Originally airing on April 22, 2015, 'March 8th, 1983' is Episode 13 of Season 3 of The Americans. It is the 39th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.8, placing it as the #2 ranked episode of this season and #3 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Listen for it when you edit - very subtle - but the music at the end of both the Paige/Elizabeth/Grandma scene, and the one with Paige/Elizabeth in the bathroom is an arrangement of the theme song done very slowly and on a piano.

As someone who was negative on the Season 2 finale - I believe I need to stand up for the rest of the season. The ONLY thing that was bad IMO was the dying scene tying up all the loose ends in the finale - everything else was not worth skipping. IMDB ratings are not the be-all-end-all but S1 8.2 S2 8.1 S3 8.3 So - it wasn't a dumpster fire of a season

Weird Magic

The show itself was not watched much on Fx but was very critically acclaimed, which is why/how it kept going. However - fans and voters started to take notice this year, with more awards and nominations coming in future seasons. Primetime Emmy's - 9/20/15 - 1 win, 2 noms Guest Actress in Drama - Margo Martindale won for "I Am Abassin Zadran" Others in the category - Khandi Alexander (Scandal), Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards), Allison Janney (Masters of Sex), Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones) and Cicely Tyson (How to Get Away With Murder) Writing for a Drama Series - for "Do Mail Robots Dream of Electric Sheep" (Game of Thrones - Mother's Mercy)

In a shocking development, Joe and Kevin agreed to wait a whole year for Season 4, in empathy with the rest of us.

Season 2 is actually very good, but the ending just derails it for most people (which is harsh, but that's the price you pay. But S3 finale.....brilliantly done.

Weird Magic

This episode was 4/22/15, the next season started 3/16/16 so yeah - it wasn't even just 3 months or 9 months - it was a full 11 months between seasons and Covid wasn't around yet!

Going to bring it up because it wasn't in the discussion afterwards - how does Pastor/Member of the Flock confidentiality come into play? Is Pastor Tim obligated to keep the secret with Paige? Where is the moral line on this and how is it different because Paige told a member of the clergy, not just some other American citizen. Is it different if it happens in confessional instead of just a confidential talk on the phone? Is he obligated to tell people because there could be murder/death etc or is he obligated to keep Paige's wishes of not telling anyone?

Youtalkingtome

That is a really great point we didn't consider. I don't know if there would be any kind of confidentiality protection for a phone call, nor if active espionage would be covered (confessions of intention to commit future crimes are usually not protected by therapists or lawyers, I think).

In one of the official podcast episodes, this is discussed. The creators posed the question to a friendly rabbi and used his thoughts to help shape this story arc

Weird Magic

In the podcast for this episode, they recorded it after they acted in it but before the final edit. Apparently there were multiple versions they were choosing from, as there is also a version where Paige says "they're spies" instead of "they're Russians". So although I would have assumed they were spies in addition to be Russian, Pastor Tim at this time only knows they are Russians based on the edit Joel & Joe went with.

Youtalkingtome

Yes thank you! That's an amazing story. I can only imagine what it was like, especially then. I'm glad you finally cleared up EST as well, because we know very little about it.

Youtalkingtome

Thank you for saying that! Between this show and The Good Place it's proof that we have no idea what is going to happen lol. We try our best with our guesses and it's a real testament to the quality of the shows to subvert our expectations!

Youtalkingtome

By no means is it a dumpster fire, I just don't think it's nowhere near as good as S3. This season was perfection. Never a dull moment, whereas in S2 it did drag a bit for me. I think it turned a lot of folks away because they thought it was going to be something it was not. However I will ride for this show all day long. This season was amazing.

Youtalkingtome

I'm telling everyone I know to watch this show. Not just so they can watch it with us, because I genuinely love talking about it. It really deserves WAY more recognition

Youtalkingtome

I think saying they're Russians adds more of a "fear factor" especially since it's happening as Regan is giving that speech. It adds way more tension and has a bigger impact.
