Freddy’s opening shot vs Freddy pissing himself. Amazing what sobriety can do to a man.

Hence my suggestion in the announcement of the Higher Tier that you comment more on cinematography. You will find that Season 7 starts bringing some REAL film-making techniques to the drama...not that the earlier seasons didn't, just that we see a big jump from the closing shot of Season 5 with the "You Only Live Twice" walk-off from Megan on the Butler Shoe ad stage to the closing shot of Season 6 with "Both Sides Now" and the brothel reveal to his kids to where you will see a LOT more of this in this season...where the show transcends TV into art...

-This is, next to Season 3 finale, the best single episode of the show, IMHO. -When this aired, I literally yelled out loud "FREDDY!" He has become a great character, one of the best of the show. -The last two scenes, Peggy sobbing on the floor of her building she bought with Abe but now is alone at, and Don sitting in the freezing NY air in January trying to sober up all with Vanilla Fudge's "Keep Me Hanging On"...Pure art. It stunned me then and it still does today.

Actuarial Lurker

Time jump from Thanksgiving 1968 to January 1969 and Nixon's Inauguration in the background- so just a few months

Actuarial Lurker

Lou is a moron and the firm doesn't seem to care

Actuarial Lurker

A shout out from Matthew Weiner to the Graduate as Don goes through LAX to meet Megan

Actuarial Lurker

And the Sharon Tate memes really went wild with Megan in the Valley....

Actuarial Lurker

Joan finally achieving her potential...yes using her sex appeal for hep from the MBA professor but still hustling. If only Harry had let her help with the scripts as her actual job....

Actuarial Lurker

Don is watching the classic Frank Capra film Lost Horizon

Actuarial Lurker

It IS Neve Campbell and given she starred in Scream it only added to the Sharon Tate rumors

Paul T Hewes

Lou is worse than a moron. He is up to this point, one of the horrible humans on the show. Stupid, vapid, and a dick.

Actuarial Lurker

Peggy owns the whole Brownstone on the Upper West Side so she is a landlord too...the buildings in the West 80s and 90s in Manhattan tended to have been built in the 1880s and are 2-3 apartment walk-ups with the ground floor having access to a tiny 200 sq ft "back yard" and one or two apartments above it. So with Abe gone she is renting one of the units to a Latino family with a young kid

Paul T Hewes

The 7th season premiered in 2014, 4 or 5 years before Tanrantino made "Once Upon a Time", so i associate that song with this show, not with the movie.

Actuarial Lurker

Lou- Don's replacement is the guy who comes over in the airport and says "does anyone need a cough drop" , because they don't have one" (since Pete's father in law just fired Vicks after the brothel confrontation) when Don and Roger fly out to land Chevy in the "for Immediate Release " episode of Season 6 when Ted and Don agree to merge the firms. Remember that Roger gets airline girlfriend to lose "Danzer's luggage". So Lou has come from mega-firm Danzer Fitzgerald where he was a cog to become Creative Director at Sterling Cooper

Actuarial Lurker

And the reveal that what Don has been doing is having Freddy the Freelancer pitching Don's copy all around NYC to different firms- leading Freddie to say how long will I be your Cyrano- just get us both jobs...

and this - is why everybody gets an opinion and they can't/shouldn't be told their wrong :) IMDB ratings have it ranked #75 in the entire series and the 2nd lowest of this season (which does mean there is a lot of good stuff to come!). Personally - I was very bored - there's only so hyped up I can personally get about how a scene is shot.

Weird Magic

"I'm sorry, I have to get back to work" - he said it so often this episode...is he speaking introspectively? Originally airing on April 13, 2014, 'Time Zones' is Episode 1 of Season 7 of Mad Men. It is the 79th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.9, placing it as the #13 ranked episode of this season and #64 out of all the episodes shown so far.

This season is so damn good (the haters are so nit picky). Can’t wait to watch it with you.

Robert Bauman

Don's actions seem to suggest that his job and working in advertising does mean a lot to him, and provide him with some structure. I'm guessing that's the main reason he isn't running to LA (personally I would happily sign up for making lots of money to not work and hang out with Megan in California, but that's just me haha). I think in the past he absolutely would have run away and started over, but he must think he can find his way back in. He does seem pretty focused on being a good ad man again.

Robert Bauman

I can't stand Lou Avery (you'll get more of him unfortunately). You can tell the creative team actually misses Don. There are some aspects of the job he was undeniably good at, despite his unpredictability.

Youtalkingtome

It was perfect film making. How they keep you in the dark until the end. The pacing and plotting are off the charts. This show is amazing

Youtalkingtome

I got the sense that he was missed, in the brief scenes we got in the office. They haven't admitted it yet, but it's weird with almost everyone gone

Interesting, rewatching this I thought this was one of the weaker episodes, a least it's a lot more uneventful compared to S5 and S6's premiere episodes. Does a good job introducing the characters' current status quos and I love what's going on with Don but it's also Joan dealing with clients, Roger dealing with his daughter, Peggy dealing with tenants... It's not bad per se, but something you'd more expect in the middle of the season rather than the big opener

tom

Was she using sex appeal?? My reading of the scene was Joan was so conditioned to expect another man trying to leverage his power over her to get sex that she misinterpreted what he was saying. Her embarrassment after he assures her that's not what he was looking for seems to confirm this. If anything it's one of the first times she's had an experience where she can escape the objectifying confines of her gender for once (besides the professor a little condescendingly assuming she won't be able to understand the difference between commissions and fees)

tom

Him saying that line made me laugh on rewatch. For some reason it reminded me of Patrick Bateman's "I have to return some video tapes"

tom

Both Peggy and Don are at low points at the end there. Pete, on the other hand, perhaps the third of the trio, is flying high. But the other two, trapped and isolated in what should be their homes. At least Don chose his fate as opposed to Peggy who is reminded of her romantic failings whether she's at home or at work. The final shot of Don shivering outside is a memorable one to me. It shows how lost he is and in keeping with that idea of him bringing the pain onto himself; he chose to go out there like he chose to go back to New York. Cold and alone.

The woman on the plane -- who I didn't realize was Neve Campbell on my first watch, despite loving Scream before I watched Mad Men -- is a fascinating character. A short-lived microcosm of Don Draper's "mistresses", even though nothing happens. There's verbal implications of sexual intimacy at the end by the woman's offering, but other than that it's just them talking about their woes and taking a nap together. Surrounded by people, in a confined airplane -- a very unsexy setting. For that reason I find the interaction interesting. And there's no real tension of whether or not Don will cheat on Megan, either -- we had that all throughout S5 and we got our answer already in S6! I think there's an underlying dark fog over her that Don is attracted to. Like Sylvia, and like Rachel. A distant brooding and a hum of discontent. A cynical outlook on people in general. Throw in the dark hair they all have in combination with those characteristics and I once saw it pointed out that it's probably not a coincidence these are the women Don feels most deeply drawn to. They remind him of himself. Makes sense, considering his narcissistic yet insecure tendencies. He's most fascinated by those that are a mirror of him, and he uses sex as a conduit for that, almost to try and understand himself.

tom

On Bob, to clarify: I was presenting the theory but I don't know if I believe it myself. You guys already mentioned the idea a bit last episode, so my goal was more so to point out all the interesting factors at play to consider Bob's character. Ones that both support and contradict the theory. Not just the Pete's mom angle, but his sexuality, trying to decipher his feelings, and how much of what he says is true versus deception / cleverly-laid strategy.

tom

I love how much you guys comment on the costuming of the show, especially the hair. I've been waiting for Season 7 for this very reason, it only gets better!

Weird Magic

If a show has an ending, unless you're Six Feet Under and maybe The Americans...it'll have haters :) To be clear, I'm not one of them....not a lover but not a hater either.

Actuarial Lurker

You will grow to dislike him more over the next few episodes. Let just say he is a coward who pulls multiple d-moves

Actuarial Lurker

Without spoilers- yes there are haters since all I will say is that the show gets nuanced and uses the cinematography more and more to convey meaning and since it is more ambiguous and less spelled out the casual viewers will complain

Actuarial Lurker

The question is to keep making progress like Freddie has done via AA/12-step what does Don still need to do to complete his bottoming out and rebuild his life?

Actuarial Lurker

I agree- and also echo what Kevin and Joe said during the reaction. He lives in the damn penthouse and has an ass-kissing doorman downstairs- he could certainly pay that guy to find a handyman to fix his balcony. Don is so broken he doesn't seem to give a shit that he is freezing in January in NYC 300 feet up. As a NYC guy- January is typically 15-25 degrees at night, windy and snowy....you wouldn't want the balcony letting that into your mid-century modern "pad"

Youtalkingtome

For a second I thought she was going to be the mistress for this season. Great read on his type. You absolutely nailed it.

CB

Six Feet Under did have one of the best series endings I ever saw!

Freddy always had great work-centric dialogue, and on at least two occasions insisted on the importance of a product’s benefits over its features. Just a little low-key recognition that despite the booze he was definitely a pro
