Didnt hear anything about All the Presidents Men in your Redford discussion. Really hope you both have seen that one. For as big a star as he is he sure has a lot of underrated gems imo. Spy Gate and Sneakers for sure but also ones like The Castle with James Gandolfini or one from his Director catalog The Quiz Show is so good.

I found the 'wrong' version on one of those Free-With-Adverts channels. It was actually "The Natural - The Best There Ever Was", and it's a 30th anniversary deep dive into the movie featuring interviews with Redford, Levinson, etc. I have no idea if it's any good, because I stopped watching to go find the movie itself. 🙂

So glad you both enjoyed this, and were able to appreciate Barry Levinson's work. This was only his second film as a director, his first being the classic "Diner" (which you need to watch if you haven't already). He also directed the beautiful "Avalon" as well as "Bugsy" with Warren Beatty. I've seen this so many times, and it gets better each time. I love everything you said about the pacing and direction of these older films as compared to today. And I also love hearing Joe say the phrase "kids these days". You're such a curmudgeon.

"I should have been a farmer" - love that line so much and I have no reason why - must be the delivery from Wilford Brimley. As for memorabilia - which I could add a pic to this post because I LITERALLY wore my Roy Hobbs replica jersey to watch this - lightning bolt on the sleeve and everything Per usual, you both picked up on the symbolism and callbacks throughout the movie, this isn't a criticism of missing one but more of a "I was surprised it didn't hit you over the head" with it. The relief pitcher was a big, blonde, left-handed farm boy from Nebraska with the best fastball in the majors...they basically made Roy Hobbs face the 16-year younger version of himself in the last at bat. With him now knowing his son is in the stands, and the bat he created from the tree his father died under just broke, he figuratively had to face EVERYTHING he's done or had done to him in his life in that at bat. When the lights went out at the end with the ball flying thru the air, I realized I had LITERALLY been holding my breath since the swing. There are only two movies - of any genre - that make me feel like this one does. The other is Hoosiers. And there's only one TV show that does it to me, which is Lost. Sincerely - thanks for watching this!

OK - spoiler alert even though I'm not going to mention the actor or the show combination...but one of the list above is going to be in one of the shows you are watching relatively soon. Do either of you have a guess to match the show and the actor? Who do you want and in which show? Hints: It's not Wilford Brimley as Vice President Johnson, nor is Joe Don Baker going to be a Russian Cosmonaut, nor Kim Basinger as a she-devil in the Good Place. No Robert Duval is not a long lost uncle on Derry Girls and Glenn Close does not steal Don Draper away from Megan on Mad Men. But everything else is up for grabs! :)

Wow, both of you coming out hot - Spy Games is an absolute MUST watch....and I too think The Sting is overrated.

“You’re a very impudent man, Mr. Hobbs.” Has always stuck with me, Prosky just delivered it so amazingly.

Also, had to look up the Close scene when she stands up and they actually did it with natural light and that’s even more impressive: Glenn Close's initial appearance at the ballpark was carefully planned to give her the appearance of a guardian angel. They waited until a clear day, when the setting sun would be just at the right spot in the background to shine through her translucent hat, making it appear as a halo around her head.

Barry Levinson also did one of my favorite underrated/unknown film ever, Avalon. It’s a period piece about an immigrant family in about 1948 and their attempts to assimilate and succeed. I think you guys would absolutely love it and can’t recommend it enough.

Chris

Quiz Show, directed by Redford, is a great movie.

If you want another classic baseball story with this feel, try *61 directed by Billy Crystal on HBO. If you get your hands on the dvd, the making of *61 is also great to watch after you’ve seen the film. It’s about Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris going for Babe Ruth’s homerun record in 1961.

This is a movie I haven’t gotten around to watching till now. It’s been on my list forever since I’ve worked on a few Barry Levinson films and I’ll chime in a vote also for Diner and Avalon. I also haven’t seen enough Redford movies outside of Butch and Presidents Men. I can recommend Three Days of the Condor which is a classic thriller.

Youtalkingtome

Absolutely and that is a great catch! I didn't even put that together. He was facing down himself. God this movie was good

Youtalkingtome

I'm glad I'm not alone in that! Maybe I'll do a solo watch of The Sting! I love George Roy Hill and Butch and Sundance is a perfect movie.

Jonathan

Unfortunately when I worked on Avalon I was pretty young so a lot of it went over my head. He was friendly but extremely organized because doing a film with everything on location is a logistical circus as I found out on films I did as I got a little older. Unfortunately my stuff got cut but it still was a fun time and it’s crazy looking back on how famous people I met were or became.

Out of Africa is a great Robert Redford Meryl Streep film, made in the 80s, set in the same time frame as The Natural on Netflix but going away soon.

Cosmic Slice

No one is better than projecting what is happening in a film without saying a word than Redford. Don't know if you've seen Jeremiah Johnson or not but worth a watch (though I don't know how reacting to such a quiet movie would work out). So nice to revisit The Natural though just to see Richard Farnsworth who has a place in the heart of Canadians for his portrayal of Matthew in Anne of Green Gables. The stories about the filming of that final scene though were amazing. From the crew raining down sparkler-like embers onto Redford from them having to raffle off things to the crowd to keep them in their seats as they had to film it in both normal speed and in slow motion...it took at least a couple of days just for that.

It was such an incredible moment. I agree with your take on Redford. I think Steve McQueen is right up there with him. Gosling was on track to have a similar career in the 2010's, obviously he's more of a motor mouth now. Redford was spectacular in this though
