Hey guys it's finally here, my solo series. It's taken a long time for me to get the hang of the software and I'm still working out some kinks. 1. The audio is only coming out of the left side of the headphones. That issue will be fixed going forward. 2. The mic is way too close to me. Forgive my heavy breathing. Asthma on top of allergies bad combo. Now that this first episode is out of the way. I know what to do going forward!

Oooh, you’re in for quite a journey! I’m looking forward to watching it with you. Sadly it’ll have to wait until tomorrow as I’m working night shifts and I need to get some sleep. Should be fun (and possibly a bit traumatic)! Enjoy!

Jonathan

Yes will be fun. This is another show like Arrested Development where there are very few throwaway lines. You got introduced to 42 regular or recurring characters this episode and they aren’t done yet.

Cole

I highly recommend stopping the show sometime after season 4 and before season 8. The early seasons of game of thrones are spectacular and amazing tv but the later seasons are awful, especially the finale season ruins almost every character and every moment the show build up too.

Maxxie

I have to disagree with that. The final season may be mediocre, but if you've watched up to that point, I think you owe it to yourself to finish the show, if not for some long awaited resolution, at least to make up your own opinion of it. No sense pretending it doesn't exist - and it's not like we're ever gonna get a different ending in book form...

Cole

That’s true and honestly I wouldn’t recommend game of thrones just because of the finale seasons, but the early season are so good I wanna but then Ik they’ll just get disappointed after.

Tezz Parker

All I can say is, be patient…😂😂😂

Maxxie

@the chosen one, sadly there's no way for me to dispute your excessive hatred without going into spoilers ; but if you take a moment to look up some of the discussion about it online, you'll find that opinions on this (including "informed" opinions) are a lot more divided and nuanced than you make them out to be - which is all the more reason for any reactor to judge by themselves.

MrRuss50

I'm excited for this. Until seeing this I'd never been into Fantasy either but this show flipped a switch in me. After seeing Season 1 I ran out and bought all the books George RR Martin had written. Then I moved onto Wheel of Time books. Then pretty much everything Brandon Sanderson has written. Now Im a full grown fantasy nerd somehow. Totaly thought that was Matt Damon or his brother first time I saw this too. Opening credits map changes from episode to episode to preview where that episodes locations will be. I think they used Leonardo Da Vinci drawings as inspiration for the artwork. Sad that you know of Neds demise but dont worry plenty of other action and intrigue awaits you.

Cole

There isn’t any nuance to it. They built up characters and gave them a lot of development only to throw it away at the end. There isn’t any way to look at the final season and see it for anything other than rushed. Like specific things that made a character who they are, or huge moment the shows been building up to objectively ruined. There’s no way of looking at these with a different lense(trust me I’ve tried) from the creators intentionally misleading the audience because they think “subverting expectations” is what made the first season so great to them actually just forgetting stuff relating to the plot( you know what I’m referring to) it was just lacklustre and a disaster and I have yet to find someone that doesn’t share the same hatred and disappointment I have for the end.

Maxxie

If you haven't found anyone who disagrees with you, you might be in an echo chamber. And that's fine if that's what you like, but if you want to hear a different tune, have a look at these- mind you, they're just the first results Google got me, I don't actually agree with them or think they're particularly insightful. (For Joe, don't open these obviously as they full of spoilers !) https://medium.com/@d3ballads/game-of-thrones-season-8-post-mortem-a22436f1c928 https://screenrant.com/game-of-thrones-series-finale-ending-5-years-better/ According to Metacritic, season 8 is "mixed or average" for users and "generally favorable" for critics - so as you can see, the fanbase is far from being as unanimous as you make it out to be.

Cole

None of these touch on the reasons the finale seasons are so hated, and they make no sense. They called the finale battle “awesome” which I’m not going to spoil anything but it literally is the opposite of awesome. There are battles in game of thrones that are awesome but that one that you can’t even see is not one of them. If people want to ignore the obvious horrible writing and disregard of plot build up and enjoy the final seasons as like a marvel movie or something that’s fine, but they are objectively not good. From the writing to pacing to even acting from certain characters is just not what high quality tv should be, and this is very clear because the early seasons are exactly what high quality tv are. I have no doubt people enjoyed the ending. I have a lot of doubt that people who were truly invested and cared about the show and the characters could enjoy the ending.

Actuarial Lurker

The show should be called Game of Incels....the first few seasons are halfway interesting but littered with gratuitous semi-porn and then the plot falls apart after Season 4- my wife and I cringed and stopped watching it since it was that badly written....

Maxxie

No, I didn't enjoy it, and I don't think it's any good, either - that we can agree on. But it sounds like it was so offensively bad to you that it ruined your enjoyment of the entire show, whereas that wasn't my experience. That's why I would still like to see Joe's reaction to it.

Yannick Denis-Trudel

Congrats on starting your own solo series... and you picked a hefty, but worthy one! As for all series, you'll get many opinions (It's amazing, it's not worth starting, etc...) but you went for this series, and I applaud you for it. I'm in with you for the long haul, no worries, you're not alone in your endeavour! "Winter is coming"

Yannick Denis-Trudel

And to help our following, the PIP (picture in picture, not full screen like you always do on the other watches) is kinda important so we can be in sync with you ;-)

Imagine Nat

Thank you for all your effort to figure out the logistics behind the scenes! And for being transparent about those struggles.

Mithroch

Joe, you Steeler lovin' son of a bitch. I was going to cancel my Max sub after you guys finished The West Wing. Now I have to keep it for your run of Game of Thrones. I'm sure GRRM took some influence from Dune. I have often said it has that feel... and I even saw Stephen Colbert make that comparison (I think he was interviewing GRRM).

Roland Cooke

Yeah, I disagree with that as well. The final season is fine. Sure the finale was polarizing, but in the cold light of day the episode is perfectly serviceable television. The show had just built up this huge momentum of fan energy (both good and bad) by that point, and had left the books behind (unwritten!) so was always going to be polarizing. In addition, Joe won't have to deal with the fan-rabia that built up during some of the season hiatuses, one in particular. I actually think this is an EXCELLENT time to watch the whole show, unburdened by the fandom of the past. Spoilers abound everywhere, so play it careful over the next 12 - 18 months

Jeff

This conversation is interesting to me because I watched only the first two seasons and then lost interest. But then I returned and watched the final season and loved it, including the finale. So it's possible I was able to enjoy the ending because I hadn't become so invested in the characters during the middle seasons. I just saw it all as really effective storytelling with amazing directing and acting. So I'll be interested to follow along with Joe and see how he reacts, separate from all the social media commentary and influences.

Weird Magic

Seven outstanding seasons and a flop with the final 6 episodes having a lot of issues (both storyline and presentation). I personally find it harder to do Schitt's Creek which to me was awful the first two + seasons and then great afterwards, than it would be to do GOT for 7 "top tier of any tv show" seasons and put up with the ending.

Jeff

George R.R. Martin may have "borrowed" from "Dune", but he primarily based "A Song of Fire and Ice" loosely on English history, specifically the Wars of the Roses from 1455-1487. These were civil wars which were fought over control of the English throne, and were fought between the House of Lancaster (Lannister) and the House of York (Stark). If you remove the more fantastical elements from "Game of Thrones", the series conveys that time period and those struggles quite accurately. Much of what the actual royal families did was quite violent, disgusting, immoral, and reprehensible by today's standards. And thus, we are so entertained.

Cole

After season 4 the quality drops dramatically. You have 4 good seasons, 2 mediocre seasons, 1 bad season, and 1 of the worst seasons.

Cole

Idk if you watched the finale seasons, or finale couple seasons, but there is so many things they could’ve done to make fans happy. They ruined character and plot development the show was built on. It’s not that people had unrealistic expectations. People had expectations of course because of how good the first seasons were and they got slapped in the face by D&D who were done with the show after season 3. I don’t know why people defend it when the actors say it is horrible, and the writers clearly are trying to rush and not take time to do.

Cole

Watching the final season of a show without seeing the rest is crazy.

Cole

I watched the show a year ago and didn’t even hear of the ending being bad. So I also didn’t have “Fan-rabia,” that apparently built up during the season breaks.

D Gyre

Oh here we goooooooooo!!!!! Don't take some of these comments too seriously, make up your own mind about it, and it may be a long haul but I do think its worth it to see the whole thing. That said, my opinion does come as someone who loved the books before the show even existed, so I have that background to help.

D Gyre

Very nature of what a person finds "enjoyable" in watching TV is subjective, not objective. You can perhaps talk about standard conventions for technical aspects of the show, but even when those things are 'objectively bad' in shows/movies plenty of people still enjoy them. There's things a lot of people don't like about later seasons, but they are still more entertaining than a majority of shows out there and there's still some GREAT episodes in those seasons. The season finale of season six is one of the most loved episodes in the entire show by a wide audience. He needs to watch it all and decide for himself.

Jesus

This is a quality program for most of it. The middle ages were full or deceit, cultism, tyranny, r*pe and violence against women. People that complain about the gratuitous use of violence and sexuality in the show should read some history. Thats my biggest thing starting off: don’t criticize a show about a cruel time period for depicting cruelty - criticize it for the show runners rushing the end to go sign a Star Wars deal.

Jesus

Shall we be comment section nemeses here as we are so frequently allies in the Mad Men comments? Truly a Game of Thrones worthy turn. 🎻🪈🎻

Actuarial Lurker

I agree Lost was interesting until it got weird and then stupid and the smarmy and GoT felt the same way....the sheer misogyny is a true turnoff

Actuarial Lurker

Although why immerse your self in filth?...My wife and I loved I, Claudius but the series Rome was brutal....after a few episodes of that series I said to my wife- so that is what the world was like without Christ....she nodded and smiled and didn't watch another episode.

Actuarial Lurker

I am a big fan of alternative history- love that Kevin is watching "For All Mankind" which I hadn't even heard of....I wish they turned the works of Harry Turtledove into movies....one series has Lizard aliens invade Earth DURING WWII- causing the Earth to unite and fight off the alien attack, Another series "Guns of the South" has apartheid South African White mercenaries use a time machine to travel to the past and try to help General Lee win the US Civil War....Turtledove's encyclopedic knowledge of military weapons and history (he has a PhD in History) make these series remarkable to read

Jesus

Diluting the art of the subject dilutes the subject. Thats why the TNT cut-for-basic-cable version of Die Hard 2 is so terrible.

Youtalkingtome

I love this discourse. We've never had a show on this channel THIS divisive. Like I said I'm gunna do it and give my honest opinion. The divide makes me wanna watch it and weigh in

Youtalkingtome

LMAO. Like I said, I never saw this so maybe there are things that I'm not gunna love. Either way it's all subjective

Youtalkingtome

I agree. It's amazing that they ended the show quickly because of Star Wars. I'm gunna be non biased and I'm sure there is going to be some material that will be uncomfortable. If it's gratuitous or unnecessary I will call it out

Cole

I wasn’t expecting you to not watch it. Just giving the info I wish someone gave me before I watched.

Christopher Hawkins

"Holy cow, I just saw a man push a ten year old out a window. I hope the dog's OK."

Roland Cooke

This show is a non-starter without Peter Dinklage. His performance across X seasons is genre-defining. In a similar vein this show doesn't get close to being possible without a bunch of progenitor shows, most notably Rome, which while a brilliant co-production between three studios, was ruinously expensive. That experience educated HBO about how to control costs.

Roland Cooke

The titles are obviously famous for their inventiveness, but their success in detailing the geopolitics of Westeros in ninety seconds needs to be applauded.

Roland Cooke

The fact that Joe was both surprised and squicked by the double-punch of the final scene bodes well for his future enjoyment (and ours), despite obviously having had more than zero prior exposure.

Kristi Govertsen

Two GOT watch tips: one, do watch the opening credits closely. They change slightly based on the locations that will be in that particular episode. When you go to new areas of this world, new areas show up in the credits. It is helpful in geographically orienting the different plot lines. Two, don’t eat while watching (this was a tip I wish I had been given before starting the series🤢). The storytelling is great, and even though I had read the books, I was not prepared for the gratuitously violent and brutal visuals of the show. There’s at least one moment (usually more) in almost every episode that will be a shock to the nervous system.

Balazs Foldes

Oh, yay, Joe vs Thrones! Gonna be epic. :)

Sarah P

There’s a way in which your experience of this show is a peak for it. I’m happy that you get to do this! You’re aware of a couple of universal issues, and you’ve seen a little bit in general so you’re aware of the general style.

nj

so glad you weren't - my misophonia couldn't take it.

nj

i'm with you on this (that people who complain about the gratuitous sex and violence should crack a history book), up to a certain point. and when that point comes, i'll be glad to discuss/debate it further and probably agree to disagree. but for now, my pearls remain unclutched.

Weird Magic

OK first of all I need to defend Lost here. If you didn't like it, that's one thing but the ending did make sense to millions of people. Unfortunately it received the immediate narrative of going off the rails. But if you got the ending - it is sooooooo perfect, IMO. Almost every reactor that has watched it straight thru, has gotten it and loved it, and I've watched close to 50 of them. The issue (again, this is my opinion) is that it was so serialized, if you left at any point during the 6 seasons it was a really hard ending to understand/ingest. Personally, immediately after the finale I didn't get it either - but then talking to my fellow Losties and filing in the cracks....it makes perfect sense and was beautiful. But I fully acquiesce that not everyone will put the effort in on a TV show to get to that point, it is just unfortunate the misinformation that continues in the public sphere yet :(

Weird Magic

@the chosen one - your original statement was "I highly recommend stopping the show sometime after season 4 and before season 8. The early seasons of game of thrones are spectacular and amazing tv but the later seasons are awful," Just to clarify -this is the chosen one's opinion and does not reflect anywhere near the majority of people that watched the show. I will also cite IMDB as a conglomerate of unbiased users/viewers sharing their combined opinions on how the seasons were: AVG S1 - 9.0 S2 - 8.8 S3 - 8.9 S4 - 9.2 S5 - 8.7 S6 - 9.0 S7 - 9.0 S8 - 6.4 So no Joe - please do not stop somewhere between Seasons 4 and 8. You'd be missing out on elite TV in Seasons 5, 6 and 7!
