Some wonky time stuff in this episode. Zoey was kidnapped in May, the same day as her graduation. She was gone for a couple of days and it's been 72 hours since her return. And suddenly it's July 4th. :P But I do think they're trying to catch up the in-universe calendar with the real world one. I'm not a huge fan of this first chunk of season five -- last episode was a bottom ten for my own personal rankings, this one is in the bottom twenty. But I do enjoy seeing these episodes through a new lens with you guys.

"This guy sucks" - respectfully disagree - as they eventually showed, neither Party wants to "anoint" the presumptive next candidate for President. Republicans don't want someone strong because he/she will be harder to beat. Democrats don't want someone strong because (if it isn't them personally) they also want someone to beat. I'm not sure if that's what happened when Ford was appointed in 1973, but would be surprised if he wasn't also considered "middle" like Bingo Bob. Surprised you didn't recognize Senator Royce - he was in a recent episode of Mad Men as Jim Hobart. For the record, the Judge wasn't Hank from the Office, Hank was the Judge from the West Wing :) Originally airing on October 8, 2003, 'Jefferson Lives' is Episode 3 of Season 5 of The West Wing. It is the 92nd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.5, placing it as the #19 ranked episode of this season and #90 out of all the episodes shown so far. P.S. The next episode is not rated super high but is one of my personal favorites.

Did not even catch that continuity issue. I think once we have S5 finished we'll be able to look back on it and really determine where it stands with the rest of the show. Either way. I've enjoyed it so far

I’ve always had an issue with the time line. She’s still icing her injuries and badly bruised 6 weeks later? Jewish boys have their bris at 8 days old. After the President is back he waits another 6 weeks to nominate at VP? At the end of the last episode Leo told him that they had some candidates to present to him, yet they are making it seem like this is just a few days after Zoey’s return.

I so wish William Devane had become VP, but also can’t hate Gary Cole.

What good timing for this Fourth of July episode!

It's a hard thing to see even looking for it, but Joshua Malina said on the podcast he did this huge "wow" thing when the fireworks were going on because he thought they weren't actually filming and he's still embarrassed by it lol.

William Devane has played a president at least 5 times that I'm aware of, it's kinda funny he *does* seem presidential and he's borderline typecast as. I agree on the don't try to be Sorkin point - TNG season 1 was a pale imitation of ToS, and it didn't get good until it stopped doing that. With West Wing there's definitively a transition but there has to be and this government ages like governments do - things change and not everything stays the same, but I agree, that's a good thing.

I’m feeling a lot of relief about the season/Sorkin transition. Even the camerawork still feels like it’s doing great, creative work. The only real shifts I’ve seen are that the plot isn’t as tight. By this I mean, Aaron Sorkin writes scenes that interlock and move so quickly that you can bang out 3-4 separate plots in one episode, every episode. This show feels like it can comfortably carry 2, maybe 3 plot lines running simultaneously. That’s a really great standard of TV. Aaron Sorkin would NEVER, in a million years, have let Josh and Amy take the time to have that intimate scene between them in the office. (“Bet you can’t stay quiet for a minute . . .”) I like that we’re going to get to have scenes and energies from characters now that are EQUALLY valid for their characters but framed differently because of a different writer.

The actor H. Richard Greene portraying Senator Royce also portrayed Jim Hobart on Mad Men.

I had no idea he's played the President that many times. I need to check those projects out. Like I said, huge fan of Rolling Thunder

You know, I didn't really pick up on it then. You're totally right. That moment was completely non Sorkin. He's very motor mouth and to have that moment of silence feels refreshing. That is not a criticism of Sorkin whatsoever, I like that it is drawing a line between show runners.

William Devane also played the president in Stargate SG1 When earth was under attack by anubis .. One of my favourite scenes

Cosmic Slice

William Devane was President James Heller in 24 and also President in Stargate SG1 and in Stargate Continuum. He was also fantastic in Revenge (another show to put on your radar if you haven't seen it...fantastic show). The casting on West Wing is always on point because I *loved* what Gary Cole brings to his role.

Remember that butterfly I mentioned a couple of episodes ago? Its wings are still flapping . Say hello to Speaker of the House Hafley and Vice President Bob Russel.

Where is Dr Stanley Keyworth when you need him? Bingo Bob has arrived, I agree I like Gary Cole as an actor too. This show and their amazing guest cast. Amy and Josh have such great chemistry, it's indisputable. Thanks guys, another great reaction.

jimmy2k4o .

Gary Cole is also a main star int hte other popular american political show "veep" he plays a chief strategist to the president who has a droid like personality. here a great a random spoiler free clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfMT6-ptP-g

Joe Pail

I like that "King Ralph" was mentioned. John Goodman may be the only actor to play an English king and an American president.

Daniel Lydford

The other change between season 4 & season 5 is the reduction in some of the supporting actors in the show due to budget reasons. It's one of things that makes the early part of season 5 feel a little empty is that we don't know the people in the periphery of the scenes.
