The Day After

All of the end of the series talk makes me want to go watch it right now! Anybody else notice the aerobics class after the squash match? 20 women in 80's leotards and a Zack Galifianakis look a like in the middle :) :) :) Also a reminder with all the "S" in this one, Elizabeth is (I believe) around 5 months preggers while shooting. Originally airing on May 11, 2016, 'The Day After' is Episode 9 of Season 4 of The Americans. It is the 48th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.9, placing it as the #13 ranked episode of this season and #36 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I was a senior in high school when "The Day After" was shown, and it was HUGE. Everybody watched it. The next day in school all the teachers took time in class for discussion. The movie didn't affect me much personally because I was already a big science-fiction reader, so doomsday stories were a staple of my psyche. (George R. Stewart's "Earth Abides" is one of the classics, though it's a pandemic story rather than a nuclear holocaust.) However, many of my classmates were truly shaken by "The Day After", and I believe it did raise some consciousness during those Reagan-fraught times.

That's great! I agree, it was a movie that made a huge difference in how Americans thought about the Reagan-era arms race.

The Day After was broadcast in the UK a month after it was shown in the USA. I don't remember the movie having as big a cultural impact, but probably had a decent amount. Either way any fear-memory I had got overwritten by the British TV drama movie Threads that was shown the following year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threads_(1984_film) That one really shook me up as a teenager, really powerful stuff. This was also around the time of WarGames, the graphic novel When The Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs (same guy that did The Snowman), and the Greenham Common protests against nuclear weapons at US bases on British soil. The 1980s were a special time!

The song "Major Tom" that features near the end of the episode is also the main theme of the excellent Deutschland 83, another Cold War spy thriller mini-series. (I have the two sequel series, Deutschland 86 and Deutschland 89, on my to-watch list). + Major Tom also came back into the public....er....ear recently, because it was adopted by the German fans hosting this year's Euros. https://youtu.be/0GKMHmQVyf0?si=7IrGUb8l3u9KCphZ

FX stuck with The Americans despite low ratings throughout its run. I think the network learned lots of lessons, not least commitment to authenticity, including use of native language. Shogun just deservedly earned 25 Emmy nominations for them. (The Bear also earned a truckload of noms).

I still need to check The Day After out. I will look into this as well. Seems really interesting. 80s period Cold War issues always fascinate me.

Of course the humorous thing is that ironically Suzy Jane Hunt who plays the heavily-pregnant Alice was _not_ pregnant. The show gives a nod and a wink to the audience in a later episode.
