Disaster Relief

Comments

Will did not have the "Jed Bartlet experience/epiphany" that Josh, Sam, Toby, C.J. and Leo had. So Will doesn't know any better. His last candidate literally died, but - as Will put it - the issues he fought for did not.

The King Terry O'Quinn appears!!! Love him so much! Surprised you didn't recognize Secretary Hutchison as he was in last week's episode of Arrested Development as "one-armed man". Originally airing on November 5, 2003, 'Disaster Relief' is Episode 6 of Season 5 of The West Wing. It is the 95th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.6, placing it as the #13 ranked episode of this season and #89 out of all the episodes shown so far. P.S. Speaking of T.O.Q - the 20th anniversary of the LOST pilot coming up on 9/22 - what do I need to do to get you guys to start watching it on that date?

Kevin, are you sure you're not watching ahead? One particular comment made me wonder, although I won't say which comment in order to remain spoiler-free. (Please know my intention is to ask this in a droll tone)

This episode is definitely more of a return to form. I love how instrumental Donna is in keeping Josh off the ropes (bless her "What a Shame" folder). And I love that CJ gets in Bartlet's face a bit to try to snap him out of whatever defeatist funk he's been in since the kidnapping. I also like that we're spending so much more time outside the White House. We'd never have seen something like that disaster site in the earlier seasons. Not a criticism of those seasons, but it's nice to feel like this is a bigger world than just that one building.

Nope, and I've avoided most spoilers, save for a few comments on YouTube (they are unfortunately unavoidable there). I can't think of anything specific from this episode that was spoiled, but most of the spoilers I read are from WAAAY before they actually happen in the show and I generally put them out of my mind ahead.

Youtalkingtome

I mean, that makes sense. He is still a bit of an outsider. It is just a shocking quick change for such a new character.

I'll tell you in about 4 or 5 months (if I remember to) which comment was a bit prophetic on your part, then. 😁

Honestly, I spitball and am pretty sure I am wrong about 99% of the time in the event I get 1% and get to feel smarter than I am. :)

Jeff

I love your discussion about all the possibilities of where the show could be heading. I'll never spoil anything, but I will say this show is high-quality and satisfying straight through to the final moment. And next week is one of my favorites of this season.

Precision artillery is all the rage these days....

MrRuss50

I also enjoy those future possibility discussions. Fun to see how close/ far away you guys are on some of them. Cant wait for season 6and 7 :)

Youtalkingtome

It's a lot of fun to try and predict where this is heading. With this being a fresh start for the WW I am completely engaged. It's almost like we started a new show

I'm talking about Ukraine of course, funny how military imperative come back around so fast! 🙂

As a first timer too, I enjoyed this episode a bit less than the previous ones this season. The wit and banter were still there for me in the interactions between Leo and CJ, and Josh and Donna. However, I do wonder whether the writers are missing it a bit with both Josh and the President individually. For example, some of Josh’s lines are a lot less witty and are more generic. (The “You want a piece of me?” line made me cringe.)

Youtalkingtome

For sure. They seem to be taking some big swings at this point with some of the characters, and I'm still kind of wondering where they are going with them.

Josh is so lucky to have Donna (and Ryan) they were so supportive. The next two episodes are my favourites of the season so can't wait!

Youtalkingtome

I love that he has them. He's got so much support and he's not alone in this. Knowing Josh I can only imagine the pressure and stress he feels.

I don't think its highlighted enough in these episodes, but I'm glad you mentioned the first lady's absence. The rift between them and her being gone is a bigger part of this rough patch in my mind than the show spends time on in these episodes. I do think this run of episodes you see the rough edges as the new show runners find their feet and get a sense for the characters. Leo especially just feels out of character for me in these.
