Pre-show conversation: "Propelgate" is what you were looking for ;-)

Man... Matthew Perry is just great. Now I want to rewatch Studio 60. On another note... Milo O'Shea (Ashland) looks very similar to my father. Seeing him in the hospital bed always freaks me out a little.

Michelle Taylor

I believe Will is focused on supporting the party rather than specifically the vice president. To my knowledge, an incumbent vice president has never faced a primary challenge.

Michelle Taylor

It is interesting that we are watching this episode on the same day the President has announced his plan for Supreme Court reform. Kevin really struggles with accents. In Robin Hood, he’d switch between a British accent and not having one at all. But he was great in No Way Out—he didn’t need an accent for that.

Weird Magic

Glad (but not surprised) you noticed the editing in the final scene. Also adding the dead silence with no office noise made it very tense/believable. This mid-season cliffhanger tied to the next episode is my personal favorite combo of the entire Series. 'Originally airing on November 12, 2003, 'Separation of Powers' is Episode 7 of Season 5 of The West Wing. It is the 96th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.0, placing it as the #7 ranked episode of this season and #65 out of all the episodes shown so far.' P.S. Matthew Perry was nominated for a Guest Actor Emmy for his work in this episode.

"OUTSTANDING" from Josh gets me every time.

- This is where the season ticks up for me (for a bit, at least). I love that this thing with the Chief Justice is a carry-over from the inauguration episodes last season. And that scene with him and Bartlet is an all-timer. I remember rewatching this a while back, just after 45 took office, and the stuff about the Arab-American who was pulled out of line at an airport BROKE me because there were actual protests at airports at the time due to the travel ban. - I was surprised no one mentioned the timeliness of this episode, given the pressure on Biden to withdraw as the Dem. nominee in the last few months. - We've already seen Stephen Culp as the Speaker in ep 3, when he gives them the list of acceptable VP candidates. I like that actor a lot, too. We've also seen the bald guy who sits next to him back in season three -- he's the one the WH makes a deal with to sustain the veto in "On the Day Before." - Those fades out and in aren't cuts; it's storming outside and the power is blipping in and out. Nice metaphor for Bartlet's powerlessness. - I think they kind of go overboard with the cuts and the music at the very end, but it's a hell of a scene nonetheless. Post-show conversation: Steven Culp (Speaker Haffley) is a good actor in "Thirteen Days" (a real good dramatisation of the Cuban missile crisis) as Robert Kennedy. And yes, Costner's acting wasn't at his best in there, but it's totally worth the watch nonetheless. I really like that we GET to see "how the sausage is made" in The West Wing. And that they really manage to link so many episodes together with arcs that you won't even see coming. Aaron Sorkin may be a master, but John Wells knows how to run a show as well (E.R.) ;-)

trenton gragg

It was a coincidence that this was the episode today and President Biden proposed sending a Supreme Court reforms including term limits today. The political battle between the west wing and Haffley goes back to the season four episode Angel Maintenance. When congressman Landis told Josh “You know, if you keep squeezing out the liberal Republicans and the conservative Democrats…”

I was at the Orlando Airport after a conference when a Palestinian-American colleague of mine was pulled out of line and really manhandled by TSA agents. I stood there and watched just in case he needed a witness. I was shaking I was so angry. He stayed very cool and calm. At the gate, I was in tears apologizing for the treatment he received.

Joy M

A college friend of mine clerked for Chief Justice Roberts. He did not have the same reverence for Roberts that Joe Quincy has for Ashland.

Youtalkingtome

Right? I was thinking about the current court the entire time we watched. The reverence with which not only we held the court, but the court members themselves. Different times.

Youtalkingtome

I never really watched ER, but this was a very well-crafted episode with a tight script. Just masterful.

Youtalkingtome

Good catches! The travel ban stuff (and the awful power Homeland Security was given by The Patriot Act) was important; America was "safety over freedom" for a while after 9/11, and it was not okay, IMO.

Youtalkingtome

Josh is really going through it, but I am glad he gets to have a few moments of levity in this episode. I'm honestly hoping he isn't down on the mat for too long.

Youtalkingtome

I really am amazed at the effortlessness Matthew Perry shows coming into this show in the middle and just destroying every scene he is in. It's unfortunate he didn't get more opportunities to carry a drama series in his life (I haven't seen Studio 60 yet).

Youtalkingtome

Right? Costner was SO good in so many films, and he really should have just steered clear of anything that required an accent. Also, we have seen SO many jokes and parodies, but neither of us have actually watched Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Should we add it to a future poll, or skip it?

Youtalkingtome

You might be right on that (the primary challenge part). I would certainly expect Bob Russell to be the nominee at this point, but a lot can happen in 2 seasons.

Youtalkingtome

Oh man! I have a similar situation with my father; he used to look like Redford did in Jeremiah Johnson / Butch & Sundance, and it hits me with a bit of anxiety when I watch.

Michelle Taylor

I don’t believe anyone should watch this movie. While the film is not entirely unwatchable, there is a particularly troubling scene that follows a hurried wedding ceremony, in which the Sheriff forcibly takes Maid Marian to consummate the marriage. My concern with this scene lies in the filmmakers' choice to treat a serious and sensitive subject as a source of humor. This resulted in the audience laughing during a moment that should have been taken seriously, highlighting a significant issue with how such themes are presented. I wish they would edit out this 10 seconds of the film. It wouldn’t make a good film but a watchable one.

Cosmic Slice

Having Will change over and serve the VP was their way of keeping Josh Malina on the show. They'd finished the "new guy comes into the West Wing" arc and needed something else for him. While a part of me doesn't want the reactions to the show to end - I'm really looking forward to season 7 because it's amazing and incredibly emotional imo. I'm super excited for the next episode too...it's among my favourite eps of the show!!

Jeff

This government shutdown was based on the shutdown of 1995-96 between Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich. While the details of the negotiations are different, some of Bartlett's lines in the next episode are based on Clinton's words (I don't think that's much of a spoiler). We're now heading into about ten episodes of some real up-and-down quality, mostly in story and character inconsistency, so I'll be really curious to see your reactions. I must admit, I'm liking some of the weaker moments now that I'm watching along with you guys, so maybe seeing it all through fresh eyes results in me being less critical. In any case, it's always fun.

Peggy G

OMG, I just came to the board to inquire if you guys have seen Prince of Thieves!!! 100% yes, put it on a future poll. I'm such a sucker for that movie. Michelle, you beat me to it, but THANK YOU, haha, we need to make this watchalong happen.

Peggy G

Awww, c'mon, there are so many quotable lines in it! Maybe it's just a classic amongst my little circle.

Jeremy Vetting

The next episode has one of my favorite sequences in the show.

Cosmic Slice

Oh, a little trivia. In case you didn't know....Milo O'Shea who was in this episode was also the villain in the movie Barbarella. He played Duran Duran which is where the band got their mame

Cristy

What an ending leading us into another great episode next week! This is my favourite episode of the season, not sure whether it's because of Matthew Perry (all three of his eps feature very highly in my faves of all time). I love seeing him and Richard Schiff spar given what phenomenal actors they both are, it's truly great to watch. I also like how the conversation with the Chief Justice so perfectly leads in to Jed's confrontation with the Speaker. Also, say what you will about Angela's character but I like that she sees Donna's potential and includes her which we know Josh wouldn't have.

Youtalkingtome

Glad we could bring a fresh perspective to this! Please point out the Clinton lines in the future episodes!

Arek Schneyer

I enjoy this episode well enough, but I am SO STOKED for next week’s episode!

Cosmic Slice

It has scantily clad Jane Fonda as a space explorer on a mission to rescue a scientist. It's from 1968 and very campy.

Weird Magic

Per IMDB - this was Milo O'Shea's last credited role. He passed away at age 86 in 2013. His first role (uncredited) was in 1940.

Weird Magic

It's a case of putting comedic actor into a non-comedic role and it working out very well....David Schwimmer in Band of Brothers...Robin Williams in everything he did...it doesn't always work well but is such a good payoff when it does.

Spanky71

There goes that pesky butterfly again!

Aude M

I would say it's indeed watchable, very 90's vibe. It's a bit silly maybe. The best actor in this film though is Alan Rickman, remarkable performance as Nottingham.

Michelle Taylor

My concern regarding this film is not its inclusion of a rape scene, but rather the way in which it was written, filmed, and edited. It seems to be crafted not for comedic purposes, but instead to elicit a response that could desensitize viewers to the serious nature of violence against women. If the filmmakers were to edit out the most impactful 10 to 30 seconds of the scene, I would be more inclined to consider watching the film. With countless options available, it raises the question of why one would select a movie that appears to dehumanize women. Remember this movie came out during the me 2 era. Joe and/or Kevin sought my feedback, and I believe that the inclusion of the rape scene significantly detracts from the overall value of the movie. Even a brief depiction of such content can have a profound impact. I firmly believe that Joe, Kevin, and their patrons have the right to view reactions to any movie of their choice. However, I would like to ensure that they are aware of the manipulation occurring in the scenes.

Jeopardy had a question about the “big block of cheese” today.

Roland Cooke

Barbarella is WILD. As a movie buff it absolutely needs to be added to your list!

Roland Cooke

Actually that bit has been cut from every showing I've seen since the theatrical release. The film still works fine without it.
