ICONIC this a hall of fame favorite. SO funny. The dialogue and physical comedy is on another level and it still holds up remarkably well. I hope you guys loved this, can't wait to watch after work today

- The entire house is a set except the ballroom. - Tim Curry said this was his favorite movie he did. - Carrie Fisher was supposed to play Miss Scarlet but she had to go to rehab. - When the movie was shown in the theaters they only showed one ending. - The VHS had all three endings. When the DVD was released it allowed you choose one randomly selected ending.

Nobody knows who Lesley Ann Warren is anymore :( She was a big crush of mine back in the day!

Youtalkingtome

I have never watched it, but The Cowboys was one of my father's favorite movies. We are definitely adding that to the poll. Thanks!

Michelle Taylor

My favorite movie from the list is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; however, I recognize the significance of connecting with your father through a film he cherished. Therefore, if the cowboy film is included, I will cast my vote for that option.

When it was in theaters, you only saw one ending and different theaters had different endings. At some point during the run, you could see in the newspaper on the movie listings page which theaters had which ending. Home video releases have always had all the endings (though I didn't realize there was a DVD release where you could choose -- my DVD doesn't have that). Jon Peters is the guy Bradley Cooper plays in LICORICE PIZZA. Lesley Anne Warren (Miss Scarlet) was a pretty big deal when this movie came out. She'd done a lot of Broadway and was Oscar-nominated for VICTOR/VICTORIA (1982). She was probably best known at the time for playing Cinderella in the TV version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella." And weirdly, after this, she starred as Scarlett O'Hara in the SCARLETT miniseries (based on the unofficial sequel to GONE WITH THE WIND, which is referenced in this movie). It is WILD to me that this movie and BACK TO THE FUTURE came out the same year. Christopher Lloyd looks so different!

Loved it, such a great movie still to this day. Mrs White is definitely my favourite. Her "flames on the side of my face" monologue was completely improvised and they kept it in the movie. Apparently, both Madonna and Demi Moore were in the running to play Yvette. There was also one more ending which didn't make the cut with Wadsworth killing everyone. Tim Curry said it was his favourite lol.

i've loved this movie since i was a kid. i kept picking it when we rented videos and my mom would ask if i was sure i didn't want to pick something new that time. i didn't. i have a tattoo of mrs. white talking about the flames . . . flames, on the side of her face, on my leg. once in the gym locker room a woman changing a couple lockers down saw it and screamed. then- her: OHMYGOD - IS THAT MADELINE KAHN? me: yes. yes, it is. her: OH MY GOD - that's amazing - I LOVE HER SO MUCH! me: uh, yeah - me too. hence the . . . (gesturing down) ---- it probably was a lot of fun for the cast, apart from all the cardio. and lesley ann warren's dress was so tight i think she had to be sewn into it. and she couldn't comfortably sit in it during breaks, but also couldn't take it off because she was sewn in - so there was a special board on set, angled against a wall, for her to lean on. ---- the singing telegram was jane wiedlin from jane's addiction. mr. boddy was lee ving, from the punk band fear. ---- psych had a great clue tribute episode, including some original cast members (but not tim curry, who'd been in an earlier episode as an analog to simon cowell). and throughout the series, shawn would say "nnnyeo" (no) like wadsworth. (he also made frequent references to judd nelson's hair flipping and nostril flaring in the breakfast club.) i love psych - if y'all haven't watched it, i'd highly recommend. ---- my grandparents had the clue vcr mystery game. different cast, different story, nowhere near as good or clever as the movie - but when i visited i liked to watch the story parts and fast forward through the actual game play. ---- finally, i have to disagree with kevin - i absolutely love rocky horror and i think it's great, for what it is, although i acknowledge it's weird. tim curry is fantastic in it - and it has actual susan sarandon.

oh, and if you want more eileen brennan, you could try private benjamin or murder by death (among several others, but those are two i've seen and enjoyed)..

This movie extremely famous bombed in its theatrical release. It's popularity is due to it airing incessantly on television for decades.

Peter

People have done stage productions of Clue. Including me, in highschool

Peter

I love the splitting up to search the house scene because everyone is with the one person they didn't want to be with. It is such good writing.

Youtalkingtome

Definitely a cult movie. I don't understand why people wouldn't have gone and seen it. Something like this would do very well today I think.

Youtalkingtome

I didn't even realize they came out in the same year! Christopher Lloyd is one heck of an actor. I have a distant memory of my grandpa checking the newspaper to see movie times. Things are so different now :/

Peter

I love how Mrs. Peacock's hair fascinator starts off weird and then gets more and more unhinged and floppy as the movie goes on.

Peter

Ha! I love when the cat makes a guest appearance.

This film is very much like Arrested Development and rewards repeat viewings. The only improv was Mrs. White's "flames on the side of my face" line. Because everything was so tightly constructed and layered. For example at the very start of the movie, during dinner, Col. Mustard says he prefers Kipling to Tennyson, quoting "the female of the species is more deadly than the male" and as he is saying that it cuts directly to Mrs. White. That is a joke that won't be funny for another fifteen minutes into the movie. The script is just a master class in both joke writing and basic scripting.

I watched this so many times on VHS when I was a kid. I still get confused about who was where when. When I was in middle school I had a notebook where I made dividers that each displayed a different quote from the movie. The ones I remember in my notebook were: - flames on the side of my face - I had to stop her screaming - but it is dark upstairs and I am frightened of the dark, will anyone go with me? - the monkeys brains quote - I am your singing telegram - communism was just a red herring Good times. Thanks for doing this one. I had fun watching along with you.

Weird Magic

Goldie Hawn was in the movie Private Benjamin (1980), Eileen Brennan got a nomination for Supporting Actress Oscar in the movie. Eventually it became a TV show and she did 37 episodes over 3 Seasons (1981-83) in the same role, winning a Golden Globe and Emmy.

"Clue" has the distinction of being a kids' classic. Kids love this film because it is about very adult topics (blackmail, murder, sex, ect.) but handles them in a way that is kid friendly, and won't make their parents freak out if they are caught watching it. This is probably the first movie I ever saw that talked a out homosexuality or sex work. And my conservative Christian parents always treated it as just a fun family film that we all watched together many, many times. I am pretty sure I even once asked them what exactly Miss Scarlet was doing that was so bad.

Cosmic Slice

So, I saw this in the theatre when it was released and we got the Mrs. Scarlett ending here. And yes, all three of these endings were in theatre. I think it was mainly the big cities if I recall correctly that got the 3rd ending. There were so many reasons behind this, one of which was to really get people talking about the movie because no one knew what the "real" ending was. Another was that you had to rent it when it came out on VHS in order to see all three endings. But for all of that, it was not a hit when it was released (though we as teens really enjoyed it a lot!)

Roland Cooke

So I was as disappointed as you guys that it wasn't on Peacock as indicated on a Google search. I decided to do the financially-sound thing and opened a Pluto account... not ideal with the adverts but I've had practice with The Americans (etc) but unfortunately Pluto doesn't allow rewind / FF which makes it impossible to synch properly. So now I'm going to see where best I can BUY the film rather than rent it, it's that good, but hopefully a version with plenty of extras (including the alternate endings)

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, that really sucks. We appreciate our subscribers, and we hate when they have to rent or purchase something to watch with us.

Roland Cooke

I'm actually looking forward to purchasing this, if I can find a decent option in the USA. Jonathan Lynn has given various interviews over the years, hoping that one or more of then would be included.

The 3rd ending is the best, if they would have given all the characters an ending I would have loved that too

There is absolutely a rule in comedy (especially stand up) that a show should be 1:30 or 1:45, because even if everybody is funny, people get tired of laughing. This is why I do not have any interest in going to see somebody like Dave Chappelle and others (excluding his questionable positions on LGBTQ+ things).....but I don't find the idea of "Wow, he did three hours!!!" interesting at all. Even if it was a brilliant three hours (which of course it isn't), it's absolutely a narcissistic idea that they can keep people listening as long as they want because they are "SO AND SO!!!"

Youtalkingtome

I love stand up. However, 3 hours is a crazy long set. Before Chapelle got into his rant era, he told great stories as well. It is true that you can get tired of laughing but if a performer can keep you engaged for a whole set, it's outstanding.
