Tony refers to Christopher as his "nephew," but he is actually a first cousin once removed of Tony's wife Carmela. Carmela's father Hugh and Chris's grandmother Lena were brother and sister. Christopher's father, Dickie Moltisanti, was a mentor to Tony when he was young. After Dickie was killed, Tony became a father figure to Christopher.

Yes, the credits going from gritty to his fancy ass neighborhood is absolutely intentional and the basic premise for the show. Tony is one generation removed from a "street guy" like his father was and wanting to kind of be that way, but also getting into a higher level of society - which he is constantly struggling with. When he goes to the country club with those jag offs who are only interested in him because of his mob ties is a good example.

Drea de Matteo plays Adriana, and yes she absolutely kills this role….and honestly don’t think she gets enough recognition because of how many great performances/actors are in the show.

Dr. Melfi is scared because of her fragile professionalism with Tony. The scene with Big Pussy and the fed right after it is an analogy to me - he/she’s the one who’s changed, not Tony

The "soldier" rationalization is a big part - I'm doing this for my family, etc.

I absolutely agree on these absolute trash "psychics" who prey on people's grief for money drives me absolutely crazy. Though the way they used it to mess with Paulie was one of my favorite moments of the series and cracks me up every time lol.

Carmela is underestimated by just about everyone except Tony. She’s a VERY bright, emotionally intelligent woman who’s being suffocated by a culture that doesn’t reward those things in women, that actually punishes them. She knows she’s a hypocrite. That’s why she prays for mercy. She really is the heart of the show in some ways.

Jerry Adler who plays “Hesh” is still alive at 95! He also had a nice run playing the solid character “Howard Lyman” on The Good Wife and its spin-off series The Good Fight. Several decades ago while I was working in NYC on a show I went to an off-Broadway play he directed.

You struggle with the juxtaposition because it’s not your juxtaposition. We all have various degrees of justifying our shortcomings and/or sins. I feel since the Godfather one of the most intriguing aspects of an Italian gangster is their despicable actions on the streets, girls on the side, while the fabric of who they are on the home front is built on family and religion. The two don’t align, this makes for many great characters blinded by their own flaws, yet constantly bitching about others. Unfortunately, Carmella has to be a hypocrite for her own sanity. This requires her to constantly reexamine her own needs which seem to dictate her current guilt, this often leads to her making ‘in the moment demands’ of Tony.
