I love the scene we get with Avon in this episode. We've already been introduced to him and know what he's capable of, but watching him interact with his family is actually rather sweet and complicates how I see his character. David Simon, the showrunner and writer, is a journalist at heart and had written a lot (for the Baltimore Sun and then eventually his book) about Baltimore police, particularly the homicide unit. His co-writer Ed Burns worked for Baltimore PD for 20 years. So this is an area they know extremely well and it shows in every scene of every episode. we saw levy briefly at d'angelo's trial. this show is great at showing us the heroes and villains on all sides - although those terms are relative to the extent they even apply. but more on that when you're further into the series.

David Simon has called this show a visual novel. Most of the writers room were novelists not tv writers. He told them to collaborate as if they would writing a book. You guys are doing great keeping up. On a first time watch it takes people usually 4 episodes to get comfortable in the world of the show. The pile of files in Rhonda’s office was realistic. The real life people with her job can have over 100 cases assigned to them at any one time. Most without much evidence and a fairly apathetic jury pool. For a Homicide detective like McNulty there are many years when only 20% of cases are solved and only 5% lead to lengthy prison sentences so it can seem like an exercise in futility especially if you still want to do some good instead of just collect a check.

I just binged The Wire At 20, it's a limited-series official HBO podcast from a couple of years ago that is basically a behind-the-scenes documentary. Spoilerific obviously, but a must-listen for everyone that's watched the whole thing.

Polk and Mahone - the two over-the-hill burnout drunk detectives on The Detail - is a neat nod and wink to the audience. 🤩 Polk and Mahone Pogue Mahone The Pogues > "Pogue Mahone" is a humorous Irish phrase that means "kiss my arse". It can be used to express disbelief or disrespect, or to trick foreigners into using a vulgarity. "Pogue Mahone" is also the name of the seventh and final studio album by the Celtic punk band The Pogues. The band's name comes from the Irish phrase "póg mo thóin", and the album was released in February 1996. <

"They're not exactly The Avengers". I choked on my beer. 🤣

I like that present it plainly. Here are your characters. Here's the situation. How do you feel about this? It's amazing

K. Cops able to coerce a false confession is a not "good." And lying to get it is pure evil.

Cops are also not paid poorly. And, in general, we've given up on the idea that it has to be dangerous. They are allowed to shoot first and make up the story later.

That's awesome. I've been a fan of this series, and the Pogues forever (watched the show live) and I've never heard that. I even have two bottles of Pogues whiskey! Thanks for that tidbit.
