margo m

what a pleasant surprise!!! been intending to start a rewatch as it slowly turns into fall (paired with a when harry met sally rewatch when the temperature finally drops)—this’ll be fun!!

Peggy G

My dog's name is Rory 😃

Peggy G

You asked what network this originally aired on - this show was Hay day CW

Chris H.

Well holy crap. Was I probably going to re-up my subscription? Sure. Am I definitely re-upping for Gilmore Girls? Damn straight! The later seasons of the show are very, very good. They're fantastic. But the arc of the first three seasons is maybe the most perfect television arc I can ever think of.

Taylor

Oh GREAT call on doing this one. I haven’t done a rewatch since A Year in the Life came out. Perfect time for my next one.

James B.

Hell yeah. I avoided it for years, because I thought it sounded cheesy. But then I saw the first scene. I was instantly on board. It's just a solid, well-written comedy.

CW was the goat, i'd be over the moon if they ever do one tree hill someday. perhaps after gilmore girls? 👀

I’ve been getting all of these, “it’s officially fall, time to watch Gilmore Girls again” memes on social media, so your timing couldn’t be better. I think this pilot parallels nicely with the West Wing (which aired in the same era). You have the walk through the town, meeting the characters like you have the walk through of the White House on WW. Alex Borstein (Drella the harpist/Susie Myerson of Maisel fame) was originally cast to play the chef on Gilmore Girls but she couldn’t get out of a contract and Melissa McCarthy was cast instead. This was McCarthy’s breakout role. Borstein will occasionally show up in a cameo role throughout Gilmore Girls. Her now ex-husband plays another character that you will meet soon. Sherman-Palladino had another show, Bunheads, that ran on ABC Family for one season about teenage girls at a ballet school, there was a lot of GG cast crossover. GG was on the CW and then WB. Lots of people discovered it on Netflix over Covid. Jimmy Fallon was obsessed with it for a while and would talk about it as if it was airing live on tv. GG and WW on the same day is making my Monday better, thanks guys!

You’ve seen Alexis Bledel (Rory) in MAD MEN. Her arc revolved around Pete. Lauren Graham’s (Lorelai) other big series was PARENTHOOD.

Peggy G

I personally want them to go wayyy back and check out My So-Called Life 🙂

Peter

Lauren Graham is in everything. She was all over the place as a guest star throughout the '90s. Now she is the actress from "Gilmore Girls" but she has probably been in 10 shows you have seen.

Peter

This was a WB show which then, I believe was grandfathered onto the CW. It is possibly the most quintessential WB show.

Peter

Melissa McCarthy character, Sookie St. James, was originally going to be played by Alex Borstein. But she was unavailable for a full series commitment. So Melissa McCarthy was hired as her replacement. It was her big break. And the harp playing character was created for Borstein as a recurring character.

Peter

This show will last seven seasons and one revival season, and they will never have a normal mother/daughter relationship.

nj

yay! this'll be fun. lauren graham has been in a bunch of stuff over the years, but apart from gilmore girls i think she's best known for parenthood and studio 60. (love the qt cup! i'm going back to visit family in iowa this weekend and looking forward to seeing all the old familiar places. 🙂)

Peter

Jared Padalacki, who plays Rory's love interest went on to play one of the leads on Supernatural. Then the lead on the reboot of Walker: Texas Ranger. The CW was not going to let him go.

HereBeMeghan

THRILLED at this new show choice! Autumn is the perfect time of year to start watching this show, too.

Cristy

Beyond thrilled by this choice, guys! So excited to watch with you.

Heather

Good choice! The Pilot does a pretty good job of capturing the tone of the series (that’s not always the case with every show), so if you liked it, you’ll probably like the series.

Heather

For what it’s worth, the grandparents sort of evolve over the course of the show. They become much more complex by the end.

Heather

Heh…he played Dean on Gilmore Girls and Not Dean on Supernatural.

Eric Guerrero

The West Wing, The Wire, and now Gilmore Girls. You guys are on fire. Throw in Battlestar Galactica and you would be watching all my favorite shows at one time.

dys

This was one of those shows that was always on in the background when I was in high school because other people in my family loved it, I was never as invested so I haven't watched it from beginning to end but have probably seen at least bits of half the episodes.

dys

Here's hoping Battlestar Galactica might be the replacement when Kevin's done with For All Mankind. That or The Expanse.

Jeff

The director of this pilot episode was Lesli Linka Glatter, who went on to direct many episodes of The West Wing, E.R., House M.D., Mad Men, and The Newsroom, just to name a few. I'm so glad you enjoyed this! As Joe said, it's like a warm bath. And I can see from all the comments that it's going to be a popular show for your channel.

Jonathan

This started in 2000. It is one of my comfort shows. This was on the WB so it never got the recognition it could have elsewhere. Like Maisel it is written and directed mostly by Amy and her husband Dan. It’s always been tied to West Wing because when this came out I had little interest because it seemed very female centric. One night I was dragged to a family obligation dinner party and accidentally taped the Christmas episode of this instead of Noel from season 2 of West Wing. I related to the family dynamic so kept watching and got hooked. Alex Borstein was doing Mad TV at this time and they would not allow her to rearrange the schedule to do both so she makes appearances as time allows. The first cut of the pilot with her playing Melissa McCarthys character is floating around the video sites.

Jonathan

Another channel I support has done this show and it was a major hit for them. They haven’t had the ridiculous copyright issues other CW stuff has had.

NOam Gold-Utting

So excited to see you guys doing GG. You definitely seem to have a knack for picking the best written shows out there.

ScarlettMi

Gilmore Girls was on The WB. The WB and UPN eventually became "The CW", but they all had different vibes. The WB lasted from 1995-2006 and was focused on a similar demographic to The CW during its heyday. I'd say that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was it's most iconic flagship series, but it also had Dawson's Creek, Felicity, Everwood, Smallville, etc.

Youtalkingtome

We did CXG a while back and they didn't give us any hiccups. I really hope this doesn't get blocked, it was such a great pilot.

Jonathan

Everwood was probably the best of the shows after Gilmore. Another show that probably would have flourished on a bigger network. One of those shows that either started or boosted the career of everyone involved.

Cristy

That Lost Boys comment sent me haha. That's how I know him too but nobody knows it. Such a great reaction can't wait for more, guys.

Aude M

Ah...So many things to tell about this show and the actors who inhabited in ! But, one step at a time ;)... It's a very "2000's" show. It's fun and dramatic at the same time. It's also considered as big comfort show because the vibes are...well, comforting (for the most part). Stars Hollow is a very peculiar town, as you'll see, with special people. As for Alexis Bledel, she was also on The Handmaid's Tale and won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in 2017.

Aude M

Also "People are particulary stupid today, I can't talk to any more of them" from Michel (the grumpy concierge) is such a MOOD.

Chris H.

BTW, I heard about Gilmore Girls during its initial run, I think as the first season was coming to a close. And I heard about it on an email list I was subscribed to with folks I knew and had worked with in another life from the music industry. And the hook for this particular email chain was that Gilmore Girls was the hippest, smartest, most-aware *music* show to air on TV. Maybe it doesn't seem subversive now, but opening your show with The La's original version of "There She Goes" was brilliant. Having the estimable Sam Phillips do the score for the show was genius. Using Grant Lee Phillips as a recurring character was top notch. And sly references like "The Chilton School" were just out there, waiting. Oh -- and be ready to decipher ALL the references dropped in Gilmore Girls dialog. It'll send you down many a rabbit hole of cultural signposts!

Danielle

I am so seated for this journey! Can’t wait to watch tomorrow

Jeff

Edward Herrmann, who plays Lorelai's father, starred in many films and tv series for over forty years. Joe, I know you're a fan of Warren Beatty's "Reds", so you might remember him as Max Eastman, John Reed's friend and editor of "The Masses."

Youtalkingtome

That's so fun. I love the cover, and I don't usually like covers. Big reference guy over here, so can't wait to get into that

Tyler Mckenzie

Lauren Graham was in Bad Santa. I loved her in that movie

Danielle

Just finishing watching your reaction. It is definitely a comfort show and it can feel very 2000s in some places but the writing is top notch and it's one of my absolute favorites. The grandparents kind of suck in the pilot but give them some time. The character growth of pretty much all the cast over the course of the series is so much fun to watch. Excited to be on this journey! Lauren Graham was in another phenomenal long running show called Parenthood and also Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. Kelly Bishop, who plays her mother, was the mom in Dirty Dancing.

Jeff

It's one of my favorite movies of all time. Warren Beatty is a brilliant director. Also, many of the Russia scenes were filmed in Helsinki, Finland, where I lived for a year as a teenager, so there's a lot of nostalgia attached. Another of my favorite films is Beatty's "Heaven Can Wait", which he made mostly to raise money to make "Reds."

that girl

I wonder if the reference to Rory's father's hot new internet start-up was written before or after the dotcom crash.

David En-Griffiths

Dunno if anybody involved has ever commented in interviews but it must have been written right on the edge. The peak of the dotcom boom was March 2000 and things were looking volatile by that point already. The crash is in full swing by January 2001. The show is released in October 2000. What a time to be trying to write jokes about ecommerce!

Kayla

I’m curious to know what channel you’re talking about because I’m constantly looking for new GG reactors
