The Lorelais' First Day At Chilton

The writing on this show is very good

Tyler Mckenzie

fun fact: the actress who played Paris auditioned for Rory, didn't get it, so Amy wrote this role for her.

You've seen Liza Weil (Paris) in a few shows. In an early West Wing episode, she was the staffer that leaked Leo's drug rehab. In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel... she was the female member of Shy Baldwin's band.

The Inedible Mattman!

YES!! I love this show! It's like #3 on my favorite tv shows of all time. I'm so glad you guys are watching this. The writing, the acting, the relatability of the stories ... it's so wonderful. And, you'll find yourself falling in love with all the townsfolk of Stars Hollow. I won't say anything else about that (no spoilers) but this show oozes charm. :) Keep up the fantastic reactions!

Mithroch

Yeah... I know. When I watched Maisel... it kept bugging that she seemed familiar... but I wouldn't have ever thought Paris Geller until I looked her up.

-Location: Stars Hollow, CT -Actual location: Warner Bros lot in CA. -Trivia: In Jared Padalecki’s later show Supernatural they made a joke about this, with his character taking the studio tour and being uncomfortable at the Stars Hollow set.

Anna

Yes! Been looking forward to this!

Jackson the produce guy was Alex Borstein’s husband at the time and was cast when she was in the role of Sookie to give her someone else to play off of for side plots. They got divorced during season 1 of Maisel. This was Chad Michael Murray’s introduction to the WB Network. They tried him in various pilots till they found a good show for him.

Lady Stoneheart (Uncat)

I just got here, literally because I saw yall were doing this. Is episode 1 around?

Roland Cooke

It's available on a scroll down (a week ago obviously), but for some reason S1E1 isn't linked in the respective Collection yet.

Super-strong pilot, wouldn't have touched it until I learned it was from the Sherman-Palladino collective: Maisel was SUCH a consistently brilliant show. I guess I thought Gilmore Girls was like Golden Girls or something! 🤣 + I particularly liked the "pull a Menendez" line in the pilot. Having the cojones to drop in a joke that dark bodes well for future episodes. 😁 > "Pull a Menendez" is a phrase that refers to the real-life murders of Lyle and Erik Menendez, who shot and killed their parents with shotguns. The phrase was used in the TV show Gilmore Girls when Lorelai tells her daughter Rory, "On the way home, you can pull a Menendez". The Menendez brothers were convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to murder, and sentenced to life in prison without parole. They claimed that they shot their parents in self-defense after an argument, believing their parents were about to kill them to keep a family secret from coming out. <

I first encountered Alexis Bledel and her deeply hypnotic eyes in Sin City, small role but she was brilliant in it.

I’d like to say something, as someone whose difficult relationship/previous *teenage*estrangement from her mother was a major factor in my relationship with this show: (I have no idea of anyone else’s experience, so I’ll speak generally) The writing of their relationship speaks SO realistically to me. The fact that in EVERY interaction you feel the weight, even when they’re both trying to maintain a civil tone. The fact that we’ve seen them interact several times at this point, and the dynamic has been ABSOLUTELY THE SAME, UNMOVING THING each time, really speaks of a deeply hurt and personal relationship between people for whom (at least for Emily, the grandmother, because of how she is, her grandiosity, etc.) is impossible to talk about openly, emotionally, or even attempt to clear the air. I really admire the way this show, and Lauren Graham (Lorelai) in particular, are excellent at delving into the depths of these relationships. That really is the power of Gilmore Girls. Really stoked to rewatch this with you guys, with myself being in a very different mental/life space and maybe even enjoying the rest of the show more now that I can pay it better attention! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts as first time guys! 💜 Anywho. Isn’t Rory fun?

Lady Stoneheart (Uncat)

Yes, I've done several rewatches, and as I've gone on my own healing journey, it's been painful to finally fully realize the reason why me and my sister both resonated with this show so much. I'm in awe every time of how well they nailed it.

So much I want to say but don't want to spoil anything. I'll forever think of Emily Gilmore as Baby's mum from Dirty Dancing lol. Can't wait for more episodes.

Thank you for sharing that! While it is a comedy (and a quite funny one at that), the thing I am really enjoying the most about the show is the difficult juggling of the relationships among the 3 generations of the Gilmore Girls (and Emily is such a big part of it). I want to see if she has her own arc of acceptance and taking responsibility for her own mistakes as a parent (Rose Weissman never did), or if her domineering personality is something Lorelei and Rory have to learn to accept and navigate. The writing is spectacular so far.

I remember those guys. I think I saw a trailer for a made-for-TV movie about them recently. But yes, the joke is masterful. I am enjoying the same whip-smart dialogue we saw in Maisel.

When my mom would come to visit I’d send her on studio tours. On a Warner Bros. VIP tour she got to see the gazebo and little downtown Stars Hallow, CT , which was setting up for the next day’s filming. She still talks about it to this day, that and being told by Eddie’s (dog on Frasier) handler told absolutely no photos while he tends to business (Eddie had a special patch of grass with his name on it like a parking space on the Paramount lot).

FYI… Joel and Kevin you might recognize Alexis Bledel (Rory) from Mad Men when she had a multi-episode guest starring role playing Beth Dawes who has an affair with Pete (Vincent Kartheiser). They actually married in real life and had a son. Unfortunately, Alexis and Vincent divorced in 2022.

One of the things that is subtle but consistent is that Chilton and the grandparents' house are styled with extremely cool colors, blacks and whites and dark woods. While Stars Hollow is always warm and colorful and inviting.

Peter

As far as the clothes go, Lorelei's natural reaction to anything from her parents is to say "no" because it never comes without strings, or at the very least a lot of passive aggression. Lorelei will always expect the worst of her parents in any situation.

Peter

It is wild that Paris didn't bring in the broken pieces to show that it got trashed just seconds before.

They are holding a cat while you are holding a cat.

Sorry if someone already said this since I’m new but - Kelly Bishop also has a long Broadway career behind her and was the original Sheila in A Chorus Line, and a lot of Sheila’s story is her real story. Coincidentally, Edward Herrmann was also a Broadway actor and they both won Tony Awards in the same year in 1976.
