NGL I actually watched this last week when you accidentally posted it, and I had comments but I've forgotten them - so I'm gonna watch it again. Because you can't watch West Wing too many times..

Peggy G

One episode closer to S5E17! 😈 The move Ryan made in this episode took some gumption. I don't think I'd ever be bold enough to even attempt a scheme like that.

Surya Gundavarapu

I saw that and I thought they accidentally mislabelled something and dint actually watch the next episode. LoL

Joy M

It is totally something I could see Josh doing in his younger days.

Yesterday was the official 25th anniversary of the West Wing debut! And man...we are about to hit some really good episodes. The latter part of this season really ramps up as we head for season 6!!

Yesterday was the 25th Anniversary of the airing of the pilot of The West Wing! Some of the cast went to the White House and FLOTUS gave remarks about the impact the show has had on public service. I would post the YouTube link, but one of the actors hasn’t been introduced yet in the series, so I wouldn’t want to be a spoiler.

Warning: Soapbox moment. The real issue with Hoynes is that he revealed top secret information to his mistress to impress her. It’s not about the affair. It’s about him violating his oath of office. As a federal employee myself, I am held to ethical, security, and financial standards. It boils my blood to see elected officials not abiding my the same rules I have to live by. These rule exist for many reasons: to keep troops safe, to avoid making decisions based on one’s own financial gains and losses, to protect knowledge about contracts so taxpayers get the most for their money, etc.

Ok last comment from me today, promise. The character of Greg Brock, the NYT reporter, is one of my favorite minor characters on this show. The actor, Sam Robards, is the son of actors Jason Robards and Lauren Bacall.

Leo often is the centre of a lot of tragic episodes. 100%. I mean in a lot of ways he's a pretty tragic character. I imagine for John Spencer it was great to really dig into some of that material, but he definitely goes some dark places. I actually really like season 5, more than it gets credit for at least, there's a lot of setup going on and I think that's where some maybe slightly miss the point. I suspect that a lot of people don't like the CJ revelation, but it's kinda plausible and also it's a useful story point, you can totally understand why they did it.

Fun fact: all the schools Charlie names are real schools in DC. At the time, DC public schools were ranked worst in the nation despite spending more per student than any other district. They’ve been getting better for the past 15 years or so, well after this episode aired. My (public) high school was just a few blocks from Gonzaga. Super preppy rich kids, but had a reputation of basic bro energy rather than real dicks. If they came to your party, they brought the good weed, etc.

Laura Room

I love how much you're both into the future of the show. I think you'll like where it goes.

Jeff

I love Allison Janney in this episode so much; when you rewatch it, you can see from the beginning how her past decision is weighing on her. And I also love Ryan's "I can make it look like I'm crying." Jesse Bradford was so good in this. I love, love, LOVE your conversation about where the show may be headed. It's so fun to hear your guesses, and I'm so excited to watch your reactions to the remaining seasons. I really think you're going to enjoy them and truly appreciate the continued quality of the show.

Heather

I really admire Allison Janney’s ability to go from badass to vulnerable in a single episode. She’s such a good actress!

Cristy

Ryan and Donna both deserve pay rises is all I’m saying. I love a CJ centric episode, Allison Janey is a phenomenal actor. I like the actor who plays the VP so I don’t mind seeing him again even if he's the absolute worst. Can't wait for episode 17!

The Hoynes affair is such a huge thing to drop in with no apparent buildup. But there are at least a couple of moments that are completely recontextualized by that revelation. In particular, in 1.08 (“Enemies”), there’s a scene with CJ and Hoynes where he says “whatever regard you may hold for me personally” which sounds SO DIFFERENT after this episode. I’m certain Sorkin never imagined this kind of development when he wrote that. But I feel like there HAD to be some kind of subtext to that line, even if it was never explored.

Youtalkingtome

They really do pay raises! You love Hoynes as VP or Bob? They are both phenomenal actors so no wrong answers here!

Youtalkingtome

I'm glad that they are improving. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a small town, we felt a real sense of care from students and teachers. It hurt my heart to learn that was not the case in a large majority of our country. Education is our future and we shouldn't squander that.

Cristy

Haha, I actually enjoy watching both VPs for different reasons, it helps that their actors are so talented.

Youtalkingtome

Dang it, I'm really glad I missed that then. Really cool that the people in office revere this show. Gives me a glimmer of hope!

Youtalkingtome

I've landed on, I like that they made the choice with CJ. She's not perfect and no one should be. John Spencer does not get enough praise for this show. It's one of the best performances I've ever seen.

Balazs Foldes

Oh, you guys are already thinking about the election process? If you are thinking about timing, I think you should also consider... the midterms?

D Gyre

It's a well executed episode and has some great moments, but I just don't really like the plot point for both Hoynes and CJ, and it does feel a little like retconning to create new drama/tension. But it is also very true that we are all human and make mistakes, and this fits with that.

D Gyre

It can fit, and its not a bad plot line, but I do feel similarly that it just comes in out of nowhere and feels like an idea to give the show new issues.

Youtalkingtome

Great point. God I can't wait for the next episode. Season 5 has honestly been very addicting. It's always addicting, but I find myself more and more anxious for the next episode.

Youtalkingtome

It was a little jarring for me at first but ultimately I think it was a very bold choice and I'm glad they did it!

Kelsey Krehbiel

Honestly, the non academic education was so invaluable that the pros still far exceeded the cons. And DC is a great place to grow up

Balazs Foldes

Yeah, I've heard it before from fans, that they don't think this retconned one-night-stand between CJ and Hoynes is just out of character. I don't get it. I also has feelings of unease about it, maybe just because of the disappointment in Hoynes, but I don't think it would be unimaginable for it to have happened.

Weird Magic

Was trying to figure out why it felt like I watched this before, because I watched this last week :) Originally airing on February 25, 2004, 'Full Disclosure' is Episode 15 of Season 5 of The West Wing. It is the 104th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.7, placing it as the #12 ranked episode of this season and #89 out of all the episodes shown so far.
