F word scene is one of my all time favorite scenes in television.

Roland Cooke

You're correct, the desk scene is an allegory for the whole bureaucracy. 🤩

If Herc grew up on the streets, it was definitely the streets of the Bronx. :)

Roland Cooke

The "fuck" scene is my favorite 'table-read' scene of all time. The Americans "hole" scene is up there too. The inspiration for the scene comes from a throwaway remark from Ed Burns that eventually their squad could communicate entirely via cursewords. 🤣

Burrell is the Deputy of Operations so he is the top person in charge of day to day operations without the salary or prestige of being the commissioner. They purposely didn’t make him the commissioner so his character could still have ambition for promotion. To show how thin the line is. The drive between the soccer game surrounded by million dollar homes and where Bubbles lives is 10 minutes. Maryland has everything from beaches to mountains, extremely rural to extremely urban all within a few hours drive. The book “The Whites” is written by Richard Price he joins the writing staff in a future season. I’ve been on the boat. The boat is not fun except for a couple hours on a warm but not hot day. It’s only slightly more exciting than pawn shop detail.

The gaps between seasons are all HBO. This was definitely not a top show to the network. David Simon made it clear from the beginning that his outline for the show covered 5 seasons and HBO didn’t want the bad press of cancelling it since critics liked it, but it’s low ratings and lack of award nominations made it low priority so they only aired seasons when there were gaps to fill, The budget was tiny compared to other shows. Most of the reverence this show has now are from people finding it after the fact.

in addition to csi: f*ck me, i love this episode for the desk scene (a perfect fucking metaphor), bodie's daring escape, the no heart anthony bit showing us once again that mcnutty (!) is good police (despite being kind of a mess in so many ways), briefly seeing the softer side of herc, learning that lester freamon is ALSO good police, and lester connecting the dots for the audience that mcnutty's probably going to end up riding the boat. actually, there's not much i DON'T love about this episode - apart from maybe the light it casts on d'angelo with his story about dierdre's shooting (even though i accept it's good storytelling about complex human characters) and watching omar let the woman with the baby cop a fix on the house. (but complex human characters, right? and complex situations - it's possible letting her get her fix for free avoided a situation that would have been even worse for her and/or the baby as she got more desperate.)

Yeah a lot of the smaller parts are played by actors from Baltimore, but few of the main characters actually have Baltimore accents. Though realistically I imagine a lot of people there now (or even in 2002) don't have that strong an accent, much like most people in NYC or Boston nowadays don't speak with much of a New York or Boston accent.

Since I first saw this episode years ago, I still find myself saying "Fuckity-fuck-fuck-fuck" whenever the situation calls for it. While this was a ground-breaking show, its two predecessors were "Hill Street Blues" and "NYPD Blues" in the 80s and 90s. Both were created by Stephen Bochco and were the first to show the chaos and frustration of daily police work by utilizing multiple storylines and handheld cameras. Bochco's work greatly influenced David Simon, who created "Homicide: Life on the Streets" and "The Wire", and David Chase, who created "The Sopranos."

Meant to mention this on the last episode but Kima taking part in the beatdown is really indicative of how the system corrupts even someone competent with a good moral compass like her. That's what is really meant by ACAB ("All cops are bastards"), even those who come in with the best of intentions are pressured into going along. I think that applies to Daniels as well, he's obviously highly competent but willing to be a team player. I live in NYC so this police incompetence feels pretty raw right now after that police subway shooting. Rant over, I love Lester Freamon so much.

I can really relate to McNulty's hatred of boat diesel fumes after the one time my friends and I did a boat fireworks viewing for July 4 in NYC, you get hundreds of boats crowded together on the East River to see the fireworks and the fumes are overwhelming. Won't do that again.

Very interesting lineage. Isn't it so cool to see how tv has evolved? The fact that we are working backwards and finally checking this out is awesome.

There's no easy solution on this show. No easy answers. Every single character on this show is complex. It's an insane high wire act they are pulling off.

Youtalkingtome

I love Richard Price! I had no idea he joins the writing staff. I have Lush Life in my Amazon checkout right now! The Color of Money is a personal favorite of mine.

Rozenn Keribin

I wanted to say this on a previous episode but forgot but it's just as well it's no longer a spoiler now - watching "The Detail" introduce all the, well, detail characters is pretty fun. And the scene where Daniels complains to a colleague about the useless guys he was given is funny. "But I already gave you someone from pawnshop? You know, THE BEST DETECTIVE ON THE FORCE WHAT ARE YOU WHINING TO ME FOR"

Youtalkingtome

Kevin Here: That's right! I read The Whites, (really liked it), thought the book said it was by the creator of The Wire, so I assumed they meant David Simon. It has been QUITE a while.

Daniel Lydford

It was pretty common for HBO series to have large gaps between seasons, and not have a consistent debut. They aired the shows when the seasons were ready to go.

Daniel Lydford

The guy who hits the cop, and gets beat up by the cops is Bodie.

Carla Davis

It's hard to believe it had low ratings because me and everyone I knew everywhere watched the wire. Sundays at 10pm we were all glued to the TV and then Monday morning we couldn't wait to talk about it in school or at work.
