Might be my favorite episode of the show. Not the best episode, but my favorite. I was like 20 years old when it first aired, and it BLEW my fucking MIND. The swerve with what happens to Richie completely rewired my understanding of what you can do in storytelling.

The first appearance of Jackie Junior. The series is still in the pre-9/11 era. Season four is the first post-9/11 season.

That was absolutely my feeling as well. When people talk about screenwriting that defies plot expectations completely, this is the kind of writing they are talking about. Absolutely masterful.

I thought it was too early; when Sal mentioned the vans a the World Trade Center, I was thinking it was the attack that was several years before 9/11 when bombs were detonated in the basement.

I won't comment on your psychopathy questions as in some ways that could be considered spoilers.

Also regarding things like the rapper and Hesh, David Chase has stated he likes leaving things unresolved sometimes, because of hats how life is periodically. Not everything ties up in neat bows.

This episode gets completely overshadowed by the next one, which is a shame because this episode is incredible.

We were all shocked by the twist, believe me! What a great sequence, from the sudden demise of a truly memorable character (props to David Proval), through to that fantastic final scene for Carmela & Tony. Perfect song choice too.

His mother was absolutely laughing at him falling. There was an episode earlier int he season where Dr. Melfi asked Tony to recall a time when his mom/they were happy. He told her about a time when his dad (I believe) fell down the stairs and they were all laughing, especially his mother. That was the only time he could recall her being happy....

This is probably my favorite episode of the season and one of my favorite episodes of the series. I couldn't wait to see your reaction when Janet took Richie out, and you did not disappoint! In one fell swoop Janet solved two problems for Tony; how to get rid of Richie, and how to deal with Janice in the aftermath. With both of them gone that should remove lot of Tony's "agita."

I loved this episode. It was solid all the way through (but of course gets overshadowed by its ending, the same way the episode where Christopher was shot does.

I was thinking about that story he told Dr. Melfi. Livia is still the same monster who embraces her victimhood.

But she gave her life to her children on a silver platter! 🙄

I’m certain I had already seen this season, but it’s been so long ago that I was just as surprised as you were by the end of Richie. I have a hard time seeing Tony as a sociopath, but that’s probably because he’s surrounded by many people whose sociopathy seems so much worse than his. Like Christopher, Livia and Richie, the latter two of whom gave some “helpful” demonstrations of their depravity in this very episode.
