What do you do with all the money? Well... for one you have a front like a strip club that deals in a lot of cash payments. If you like the characters in this... definitely check out one of David Simon's other shows... Treme. It's about post-Katrina New Orleans and has a few of the cast from The Wire... Clarke Peters (Lester Freeman) and Wendel Pierce (Bunk) as well as some known names like John Goodman and Steve Zahn.

One of my favorite things in a television show or some other kind of long-running series is when there's a character I could not hate more that gets me to completely turn around on them. Prez is a great example of this, and I'm so excited when he shows his worth -- even making a presentation of it, not just saying "I figured it out" but giving Kima and McNulty an example and explaining why it works so well.

The timing of this episode was a funny coincidence. Yesterday work had me make an extremely rare trip into the area of the wire where I was at the area Avon was talking of expanding to and at that corner where Wallace saw Brandon. I like that this show shows all types of cops. People join the police department for multiple reasons. You can see people like Lester, Jimmy, Kima who probably did it to do some good. Herc and Carver probably joined because it is one of the few places where someone with their backgrounds and education can get power and respect. Then you also have the people who join the police because it is a job that if you keep your head down and stay out of trouble you can make a good living. Prez never struck me as someone who wanted to be a cop. I have a feeling the relationship with Valchek’s daughter came first and he set up Prez with a good job that he was not suited for and scared to do. That’s not based on any future information just my own view of the character. My sister worked for BPD for a time, her reason was as a postal worker she got stuck working in bad neighborhoods and said if she had to walk those streets anyway she’d rather have a uniform and a gun.

I've been keeping my mouth shut every time you guys go off on how useless and terrible Prez is :) Andre Royo (Bubbles) is such an incredible actor. Bunk and Lester's actors are main characters in the show David Simon did after this, Treme, about New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina. It's less plot-focused than The Wire, more of a character study. Also stars John Goodman, I highly recommend it.

Oh cool! Without providing spoilers, I would love to know your sister's view on how well the show handled not just the job, but the city as well.

This is a good depiction of Baltimore crime in the late 80s and early 90s which is the time David Simon and Ed Burns had experience with. Some things are better now 25 years after the show many are much worse. I’d love to see a reboot of this show today because there are so many new stories they could tell.

All of the higher up’s are the worst. The police, the streets, they all are corrupted and treat the lower classes in their places like nothing. Avon at least was at a soup kitchen first time we saw him. Which is more than we ever see police higher ups helping the community, besides the goat who I can’t name yet.

Youtalkingtome

You do have a point. At least he's giving back in some way. He's also destroying so many lives and basically keeping those soup kitchens full. Love how they show that all this rolls down hill....or trickles as they said.

One of my favorite episodes… Prez’s Redemption + Omar’s Meet & Greet.

Here in Australia, gambling winnings are tax free, so criminals use poker machine to launder their money. They put the money in and pull it back out immediately with a written record of them getting it legally.

The guy who plays Johnny Weeks was in Harmony Korine's first movie

Since we have so many mentions of the excellent underrated series Treme here I wanted to also mention the mini series that Burns and Simon made in 2008 in between The Wire and Treme called Generation Kill. Excellent adaption from a book by a Rolling Stone author named Evan Wright and his experiences embedded with an elite Marine platoon in Iraq in 2002 . Think you guys would really enjoy it.

Every few years David Simon talks about doing more seasons. He says he’d like to do one on illegal immigration or Baltimore’s healthcare crisis. But he had such a shitty time with HBO in the first run, never knowing if the show was coming back, he’d be reluctant to make any commitments.

Generation Kill is great, but if I remember correctly they haven't seen the Band of Brothers/Pacific/Masters of the Air series, where Generation Kill perfectly fits after.

It’s is great that the two of you are watching The Wire, The West Wing and The Sopranos, because I think these three series perfectly represent early to mid 2000’s American politics and post 9/11 America. In some scenes you can definitely hear Dominic West and Idris Elba’s English accents slip into the dialogue.

I already mentioned how I loved the line in "The Detail" where someone says "I gave you a guy from pawnshop" with both unaware of the significance of that line, but one thing that struck me earlier is in the very scene introducing all those people... YOU BARELY SEE LESTER AT ALL. Like there are establishing shots of all those people coming into the office and installing their stuff and there is the BRIEFEST flash of a face where the connoisseur goes "LESTER FREAMON" but on first watch you probably don't even see him. He's invisible until he's not.

Youtalkingtome

You can hear them slightly, especially with West. I'm so into the performance I barely notice it. I do love how these 3 shows tie into one another.
