Never actually finished this episode in all my many watches of this show but here today to try to change that :)

MrRuss50

Funny you mention Carlin. I just saw went and saw Saturday Night in theater last night and you'd both really enjoy it. Not a big part but Matthew Rhys is Carlin.

Tezz Parker

i've watched west wing series at least 7 time. I've watched the first five minutes of this episode and thats it. I guess I'll see what I missed...lol

Roland Cooke

Wilson Cruz (Jack Sosa, the young press aide) would go on to be main cast on Star Trek Discovery (Dr Culbur)

Cosmic Slice

I love it when I can nod along to some of your comments after the episode...but I can't wait to see your reactions when we get closer to the end of this season. Even when I know what's coming I just never get tired of this show. I really hope you guys do Studio 60 and The Newsroom after this because I can never get enough Sorkin. (I still have hopes of Mary Tyler Moore at some point so you can see how it inspired Mrs. Maisel. Streaming on Apple tv and Hulu I think.)

Peggy G

I still see him as Ricky from My So-Called Life 🤷‍♀️🫶

I saw this episode in the original run but never watched it again on repeated viewings of the series. It was such a "one-off" that I wasn't interested. So I'm surprised by how much I liked it this time. It's not great, but interesting, and Allison Janney is always fascinating. Now you head into four great episodes to finish the season, continuing into the excellent beginning of Season 6, and then to what I feel is the start of a rejuvenated, fascinating series.

Weird Magic

Kevin's right - fillers are fine if they can find a way to advance the plot even a little, or if they are extremely entertaining on their own. This didn't advance the plot at all, and it was (as much as I love them) a documentary, which has a very narrow audience that will find it entertaining. And the Supremes was soooooo good it was hard to follow it up with a filler. At least, that's my assumption as to why this is ranked as the worst episode of The West Wing. Originally airing on March 31, 2004, 'Access' is Episode 18 of Season 5 of The West Wing. It is the 107th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.1, placing it as the #22 ranked episode of this season and #107 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I refused to even watch this episode again m, I hated it so much the first time. I re-watch the series once a year and this is the episode I skip. I watched Joe and Kevin do the intro and analysis at the end and that’s it. It’s a lackluster episode at best and such a let down after Glenn Close.

Youtalkingtome

I get where you are coming from. Ultimately we really liked it! However, I can see how this slows down the pace a bit

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, totally get it. Fun to watch but I don't know how many times I would revisit this. Maybe if I was in the mood for a one off episode. I did find this very interesting nonetheless

Roland Cooke

I'm really surprised to read all the negative comments. It's a filler episode, sure, but hardly the first time the show has had one of those, and it's a different style, but again, hardly the first time the show has done that. Any episode would have struggled to follow The Supremes, I thought this was a fine choice, but apparently many folks think otherwise.

D Gyre

I'm pretty shocked too! I always thought this was one of their better hits, and gives them a more unique concept and feel from the Sorkin years.

Cosmic Slice

It's never a wonder that most of the filler episodes are more CJ-centric. Janney is just such a strong actress. And while it doesn't advance the plot, it's a breather before the buildup to what's coming...and an interesting perspective to the chaos of the West Wing

Alex Lee

I'm so glad you enjoyed this episode. I understand that a lot of people very vocally don't like it. But if there's any character that could make an episode like this work it's CJ, and if there's a member of the cast that could handle being the sole focus of an entire episode, it's Allison Janney!

Yannick Denis-Trudel

Wow... I knew this episode had a controversial stigma attached to it, but this is quite staggering. Happily, you've given it a fair shot, and like you, I appreciate the effort the production did: New cast members, showing off their talent; Regular cast members in a different light, but still great; New sets shown (the cubicules for media outlets, and the red carpeted corridor in the Media area are 2 that comes to mind); The "behind-the-scenes" feel of it all (with the press office staff meeting in C.J.'s office, for example); Camera graininess leveled as a TV documentary (not as a TV show); Use of archive footage and real life interviews with ex-WH and media employees, to give it a sense of realism; and Allison Janney's work, such a wonderful actress. Overall, I did get more out of this watch than any other time I tackled it before, and I've re-watched the whole 7 seasons on a quasi-yearly basis since I've gotten the Complete series Folder-DVD set, at least 15-17 years ago. It's a joy to re-watch beloved series, and new movies I haven't seen before, with you every week!

Magic...You have been the guiding light. Giving us the facts about the episode with very little opinion. You've basically been our Wiki. And we love you for it. This episode threw so many people off...it even threw you off. You didn't even do your fact review properly. And that is absolutely saying something. This was the weirdest comment you could have made, in line with the weirdest episode The West Wing has ever done. This should have been the Halloween episode with how insane everyone behaves from it.

Weird Magic

:) So I checked what I posted here vs what IMDB says - which fact wasn't correct? I thought maybe it was not the worst episode anymore (I threw all these into a spreadsheet a couple years ago and formatted it to be able to post the same no matter the show) so maybe the numbers changed...but I checked the other episode that got a 7.1 before is now a 7.2 so it is definitely the worst rated show overall. What am I missing? :)

Weird Magic

I went back thru and updated all the IMDB scores for all 7 seasons again - more tweaks than I thought..,after 20 years I didn't think the needle was moving anymore - people must still watch this show or something :)

Weird Magic

I didn't like it first time, but have every other time I watched it (including this one). Great spotlight for Allison Janney so that can't be bad

Youtalkingtome

I like that they tried something different! This is the fun part though, it's great discourse and mileage will vary for some people. What we are left with is a very interesting piece of television.

Youtalkingtome

First of all thank you so much for your kind words! This episode does feel like it would be an extra on a DVD. I don't mean that as a slight. I just really appreciate the different approach.

Balazs Foldes

I'm not sure, but I think this episode feels a little more irritating than other filler episodes... is because it's a good genre parody of such docus. Repeating sound bytes, making fantastic claims (something along 'events that will determine the fate of the Bartler presidency', or something like that), and building a huge flashy story out of little real content. Stretching out a 15-minute story into a 40-minute documentary. If anything, this should be a poke at how journalism works. But I agree, there were a few curious bits and takes, I especially like how each actor takes the challenge of trying to look like somebody who has difficulty being comfortable in front of cameras.

Devon Cooper

I just had a quick question for ya both… I know you talked about a couple months ago, but what did you decide about The Crown. It is probably too 5 series of mine and is done so well. I know you guys like this and also like Maisel, so I am sure you would really like it. I so hope you do. Let me know!

Devon Cooper

Wonderful news! It is so good and of course dramatized, but very accurate in my opinion from studying the British monarchy for a long time. So looking forward to it! Also excited to see you might be reacting to the newsroom!! Yay!!

Riesling

I really like the scene where Agent Castor comes to CJ to apologize in the name of the FBI and the president and asks here to leave the door open. It´s just a small moment that shows, all of these man in power noticed they made a mistake and they are not to proud to say so in front of cameras.

kosmickrab

I really wish they would have shot this episode but held it for after the series ended. There's a personal reason why I feel that way, which I can't mention because it will spoil future events, but it would have been really nice to view it as a sort of "lost episode," and have a new perspective seeing these characters then from where they end up. I've considered saving the episode for the end when I've rewatched the series, but I always forget about it until it plays.
