You probably found this from looking it up after you watched it but yes, that AA meeting was mostly real if I remember correctly they asked AA members that would be willing to go on camera to stage it, but make it as realistic as possible. The musician who played Waylon is a recovering addict and had a long struggle when his son fell into the same habits.

Delaney Williams, who plays the comic relief in the homicide office, is a fun comedic actor. He still lives around the Baltimore area. The person he is portraying is a real person who was one of the original cops David Simon, shadowed for his first book and the basis for a main character on homicide. David felt so bad for how he made Jay look that he gave Jay a job on the wire.

couple musician/actors that you pointed out in this episode. Steve Earle as Waylan with the great speach at the NA meeting. And Fredro Starr as Bird plays a convincing ultra violent gangster. I'm sure not in your guys' wheelhouse but his rap group Onyx was very big in mid 90s. You've proably even at least heard the hook on one of their biggest hits "Slam".

I love Earle as Walon. I think he is even better as Harley in Treme.

One of my favorite things ever is when there's a character who starts out an absolute piece of s*** but they manage to turn me around with character growth. Prez is one of the best examples of this. And not only does he turn out to actually be useful, I love how you can see how enthusiastic he is now, like he never knew the job could be so satisfying. That's awesome. This guy is a scene stealer. Love that Simon stayed so close with the cops that he based these characters on.

Love how well they set up uvf shgher pnerre bs pubvpr. Thl jnf znqr sbe grnpuvat zngu! Also wondering when it will no longer be too soon to say things like "V ybir Cerm fb zhpu" or "Ur'f zl snibevgr punenpgre". Not quite yet I think? Not that I'd necessarily say such things but I'm pretty sure some would and I'm just amused at how awkward some things are to talk about in spoiler-free ways on this show :)

FYI there will be a future season where the institution in focus is the Baltimore public school system, following up on your discussion on Wallace and the kids in the low-rises. It's very well-done and something to look forward to

In the summer of 2002, 4 or 5 friends had started watching the show together on Sunday nights. Any time Sgt Jay Landsman appeared in a scene all of us had to pick up food we had served and take a bite after we saw the scene in this episode where he gives Santangelo the gypsy's card. All of us loao.
