"Cold open" --> Pun intended I hope This is also the perfect même for "You had 1 job..." I'll continue after finishing the re-watch

About what you asked regarding later seasons - some people will swear that it all goes to garbage after season 4, but I don't agree, and I don't think you will either. For one I don't agree with the cutoff point - I think seasons 5 and 6 are still excellent, and in fact I think the single best episode in the entire show is in season 6 (so you've got that to look forward to !) Seasons 7 and 8 are hard to defend - they just feel extremely rushed, like the creators were tired of working on this and they just wanted to wrap everything up as fast as they reasonably could. Still, in a vacuum they're decent television - but the thing is , you can't watch them in a vacuum ; you're bound to compare them to what came before, and it's not a flattering comparison. Anyway, you'll judge for yourself soon enough !

Without spoiling later seasons the pacing just isn’t what your used to in my opinion

To answer your question about the later seasons, I have to agree with most of what Maxxie wrote. Season 4 is the last one with material from GRRM (George R. R. Martin, the author of the books). Though the showrunners got the rights to produce this show from him after answering some key questions about what they deduced from reading the books, they had to create original plot points starting from season 5-6 (some good, some bad, but still mostly good), and then really got the wheels off the wagon in season 7, and lit a dumpster fire in season 8 (especially episodes 5 & 6) I'm a completist, so I'll watch them, knowing they're flawed. Still doesn't tarnish the quality of the earlier seasons, and you're in the best run of GoT, so keep enjoying it!

I have a very different take on the rest of the seasons. Originally I watched only seasons 1 and 2, then later watched the final two seasons and LOVED them. So I suppose, without having much to compare them to, I could enjoy and appreciate seasons 7 and 8 on their own as good television. I'll be curious to see how my opinion changes now that I'll be watching seasons 3-6 for the first time along with Joe.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the fact that we have one of the rare scene with Lena Heady (Cersei) and Jerome Flynn (Bronn) on screen at the same time. They were once in a relationship that ended badly, and it is rumored that they both had a clause added to their contract to never be together on set. This may have been an exaggeration, but their report on screen is brief or non-existent.

As someone who didn’t read the books, and ultimately wasn’t really mad about anything that happened on/with this show — I would say that it felt the major criticisms of the later series were two-fold. I’m happy to be corrected, but it felt like they were: 1) (I will say that I think this is on George R. R. Martin.) They ran out of source material at that point. Even though GRRM told them how he is planning to end the books, they still had to come up with a lot of stuff on their own, which lead to a bit of a tonal difference in writing. Maybe. Again — I enjoyed the whole show. (His massively drawn-out writing/publishing timeline of these books is something I won’t get into, but I find quite ridiculous.) 2) People saying they rushed the last 2 seasons have it right. There’s myriad reasons that could have been why, but the final seasons get shorter and so do the timelines. So far we’ve seen people take looong journeys to get to places, which feel very far apart. The world feels massive, which is one of the reasons why it’s fun trying to imagine how all of these plots will intersect. So many plots/characters converge later, and so we need to move around a bit quicker.

Sarah P

So glad you’re enjoying the fact that characters you thought were done can re-emerge in ways you didn’t expect. It goes back to the fact that the show has us liking people with different allegiances, and how complex the politics of this world are. It means that you may see alliances and friends — or enemies — between people you never would have initially thought possible.

If you ever get a chance to watch the series "Rome", you'll see many "Game of Thrones" actors, including Ciaran Hinds as Julius Caesar.

In terms of the later seasons I think you're going to really benefit from not having year-long gaps between them.

I don't know if Margaery's expedition to Flea Bottom is based on Princess Diana, but it's hard to oversell just how transformative her actions were, with AIDS victims in particular.

Maxxie

I believe he has confirmed that he did draw inspiration from the Mamluk slave soldiers, as well as from the Ottoman Janissaries.

If you thought season 2 was one of the best seasons of TV, man just wait, this season is so much better. You're getting into peak Game of Thrones now.

I'm curious how scary you find the wights and the White Walkers / Others. The wights being the zombies reanimated from corpses of people, the White Walkers are the ones that seem to be in command of the wights, the ones who it's not clear if they were ever human. In the books "White Walker" is just one folklore name for them but they're usually called "Others", the show changed that to avoid association with the Others from Lost which was ending around the time GoT began. This scene where the remnants of the Night's Watch expedition is fleeing from getting massacred by the Walkers/Others goes full horror in the book. It's at night, they're in the woods, more than half their comrades have died, many of those surviving are horribly injured and close to freezing to death... the line "sobbing, Sam took another step" repeats again and again to incredible effect. I wish the show ever made the Walkers/Others as scary as they are in the books.

We might have liked Tywin for his scenes with Arya in the last season but this is not at all a turn, this is exactly the same character. This side of him has always been present from his first scene.

Youtalkingtome

Right, that's kind of what I've meant. In Season 1, we got a great introduction to who he is from Tyrion. I just really enjoyed his time with Arya.

Youtalkingtome

Is it bad I find them more cool than scary. Like it's effective for sure. Their design is just so awesome

Youtalkingtome

Got it. If I'm recalling correctly Benioff and Weiss had a Star Wars project they were developing as well.

Youtalkingtome

I'm loving it so much. Every single aspect of this show is interesting to me. This might be my favorite show that we are doing, now that Mad Men is over. The Wire and WW are very close though

Matthew Hooper

A lot of people have issues with seasons 7 and 8, and while there is a certain suspension of disbelief you have to deal with when it comes to timelines and pacing, I generally really like 7 and 8, and I think a lot of the choices that were made made sense and were grounded in who the characters are and the events that came before. So it all comes down to personal taste, it'll be different for everyone. Personally I find seasons 5 and 6 a little slow and dull, while others really love them.

Youtalkingtome

Interesting! I've heard those are monumental seasons. Like I said, I'm just gunna enjoy this ride and I will always give my honest opinion!

Roland Cooke

There was one directorial / narrative / marketing decision that was made to close out one of the later seasons, that was just dumb. Designed to boost interest in the next year's season it just resulted in pissing everyone off. A tiny change would have achieved what they wanted, and I'll point it out when we get there.

Michelle Taylor

One reason some individuals may have been dissatisfied with the ending is the extended gap of nearly two years between Season 7 and Season 8. During this period, fans were engaged with various podcasts and discussions.

Youtalkingtome

Expectations were just through the roof. That's unfortunate. I'm really glad I get to see it all in one go.

Building on your 2nd point - the speed of the last two seasons denies us the time/events/experiences/inner monologues/shifting alliances/etc. to see the characters we have watched develop into multifaceted beings that we can both love and hate, admire and despise, understand and condemn make choices that we don't understand because we don't have the context to see why they were made. The storylines are believable and would have been great if time had been taken to explain how the characters got from one decision, change of heart, and alliance to another - at least for me!
