I think it's so important to have episodes like this which show how the work of espionage can be truly cruel and heartless as a means to an end. Philip and Elizabeth are human beings, but their work requires them to be less than human, and this is the work they choose. As a result, our own humanity is challenged as we struggle to empathize or even sympathize with their inner conflicts. On another note, it may be time to change the name of your channel to "Watch This! with Brad Pitt and Justin Long."

Roland Cooke

One of my favorite episodes of the whole show. Devastating.

Roland Cooke

Your memory is mostly correct. It was indeed The Great Escape, the scene where Gordon Jackson's escapee character is about to get on the bus to freedom along with Richard Attenborogh's character. A German officer wishes him good luck - in English - and Jackson's character thanks him....in English.

Roland Cooke

Your outrage at the end is matched only by the look of despair on Philip and Elizabeth's faces in the car. The bigger surprise is that it's Elizabeth initiating the ending of their mission. Your joint response at the end of the episode is a testament to how brilliant this show is. Never a dull moment.

Thank you, I think I was mixing it up with the Family Guy parody....It's been years since I've seen either one!

Your comment about Oleg’s boss calling him by his first and middle name got me thinking about all of the cultures that have patronymic middle names. I’ve been doing a lot of genealogy research and I’m part Dutch. The Dutch also use patronymic middle names. Peter Jansen Wyckoff is the son of Jan Gerretsen Wyckoff who is the son of Gerret Gerretson Wyckoff, etc. In NY when the British took over, some of the Dutch Anglicized Jansen to Johnson. I’ve assumed many of my ancestors were English and then went back another couple of generations and found out that they were really Dutch.

The ominous way Elizabeth says “we are them” in Russian to Natalie. Chills!!

Roland Cooke

@Joy - agreed. The Russians have a long, LONG, history of never forgetting about traitors. In recent years there was the Salisbury Poisonings (made into a great mini-series btw*) where they tried to assassinate Sergei Skripal, who was one of the Operation Ghost Stories** people that went from East to West in the spy swap***. That lead to the biggest-ever expulsion of Russian intelligence officers. * was previously on Netflix, but I don't know if it is available anyomore. (Mayb on PBS because it was a BBC production) **the overall inspiration for The Americans *** I think this attempted assassination was conducted because they considered that Skripal had broken the rules by going back to work helping Western Intelligence after the spy swap. But it could just as easily have been because "we are them"....

Oh man! That's a really cool revelation. I haven't done much of a genealogy of my family, but now I'm curious.

Really love the tension in that scene - the "is she - isn't she" back and forth that not only the audience goes thru but Philip goes through AND Elizabeth (at the end) apparently goes through too. Originally airing on May 16, 2017, 'Dyatkovo' is Episode 11 of Season 5 of The Americans. It is the 63rd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.7, placing it as the #1 ranked episode of this season and #7 out of all the episodes shown so far. 12 episodes remain

This show is different than others, it does not use traditional story telling motifs. From the fake Chekov's gun to the scenes with no dialogue of just people eating supper, to the somewhat constant "I don't know what to believe" that the audience goes through, killing characters in the 4th episode of a season et al. Along those same lines, I'm not sure your supposed to be on the main characters side, which means I'm not sure we are supposed to get the traditional "redemption arc" that almost every show has. And maybe they'll subvert expectations again (as Kevin has said multiple, multiple times in these reactions - "I take back what I said about _____") and we will get the arc. Or maybe something in between. It's the unknown direction that they are going to go that really makes this a fascinating show for me. #cantstandmarvel #samestoryeverymovie

I agree with you. It's not traditional at all. We've talked about how we love 70s movies because or protagonists used to be complicated. This is very much in line with that. I don't know what the end is going to look like for these two. All I know is, it is hard to be on their side.
