Oh man, kinda forgot about this movie but I remember liking it much more than I expected to.

Pretty timely too, since Europa Clipper just launched.

The main reason NASA would never attempt a mission like this (other than the cost) is Europa is impossible for humans to survive on in any spacesuit or even ship we could conceive. Jupiter has an insanely powerful magnetic field that captures massive amounts of charged particles, resulting in radiation so intense you'd probably need several feet of lead shielding to survive. Even the robotic Europa Clipper mission heading there now won't land or even orbit Europa directly for that reason; it couldn't survive the radiation that close to Jupiter for extended periods, so instead it'll use elliptical orbits around Jupiter that have it make brief flybys of Europa to capture data, then spend most of each orbit at a much greater distance transmitting that data back to Earth. That said I'm totally fine with the movie paying lip-service to but ultimately glossing over the radiation danger, you wouldn't have a movie otherwise. The hydrazine Sharlto Copley's character got covered in is used as fuel for reaction control thrusters in a lot of spacecraft, and yes it is extremely toxic and reactive. I really like that the aliens don't seem to be malicious monsters, they just seem to be animals reacting to a novel phenomenon. I kinda think it's fair that they're not averting dumb horror movie character tropes because this isn't a horror movie.

For sure. This is a science fiction movie that leans more into the science aspects of it more than anything too theatrical. For its budget, it was fantastic. It leaned really well into "a Hollywood jump scare is coming" but never really leaned into that laziness.

Yup, I don't think it has quite the filmmaking or acting talent behind it that Moon does (apt comparison by the way, guys) but as the guy who leaves you the nerdy "well akshually" comments on the For All Mankind reactions, this pretty much passes my smell test for realism. Good movie, making excellent use of a small budget.

Glad you guys liked it! I really like a well-done, low-budget film like this. Not the best sci-fi out there, just a really solid film. Thanks for doing the "you pick them, we watch them" thing. That was fun!

dys

Also yes, that was Clay Davis. Shiiiiit.

Thank for electing it! For me personally, this is the absolute, best kind of sci-fi: it took the science aspect of it seriously. It was captivating and delightful.
