I think the really frustrating about this is they did have a better plan with the wire but the bosses forced the buy-busts which led to what happened. Wallace just breaks my heart, the kid is going through so much. a tough episode for your guys. Orlando has to go down as one of the dumbest characters in television history, that's what greed and envy will do to you

This is obviously the big episode of this season. "Got to, it's America man" is still one of the best lines to end a cold open on ever. I completely forgot about Orlando as a character and how monumentally (but believably) stupid he was these last couple episodes. Forgive me if I recommended this before, but Roy Wood Jr's standup bit about realizing Idris Elba is British is hilarious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDcLlgsKg5U

IIRC Idris Elba first came to the attention of British audiences in the fantastic mini-series Ultraviolet (no connection to the movie franchise, except that it is also about vampires). Absolute crime that there weren't more seasons of that show. There was a failed attempt to make a US version, and I think Idris was supposed to have been a key part of that show. Idris appeared in an episode of Space Precinct...let's just say it didn't go well. 🤣 https://youtu.be/rKRQmvtCHJQ?si=vQysH0p0U6sYemTg But Idris clearly got his revenge (first couple of minutes of this): https://youtu.be/UDcLlgsKg5U?si=rOIB7ns-q7lfs8WX 🤩🤣🤩🤣

This episode was the only time I was really “on set” while they were filming the wire. The convenience store they used for the stakeout is fairly close to me, so I was chatting with Carver and Sydnor between takes and they were talking about having a really dramatic scene the next night. I asked Corey who played Sydnor whether he got stressed if it was a really important scene and he said after his first job being a movie with Sidney Poitier, nothing gets him nervous now. The former police commissioner is the detective that walked up with Bunk in this episode and told McNulty he looked like shit.

I love Carver’s reaction at the end. It’s so over the top in such a specific way. That’s a scared, sad guy who doesn’t know how to be scared and sad because in his world, cops don’t get scared or sad. They just get angry. I also remember not realizing until that moment how attached Carver had become to Kima. And I think the reason I didn’t realize it is because Carver didn’t realize it either. That kind of revelation - subtle but unmistakable, layered, rife with all kinds of character insights while still NOT REALLY even being the point of the scene - that’s an almost miraculous confluence of brilliant acting, writing, and directing. The Wire has a lot of moments like that.

So I want to correct something. Most people not familiar with the maryland area, assume that these a gangs. They are not. Hence to why they have no name. The would more than likely if referred to as anything would be a "crew". They are not a gang because they have no name, no colors, no creed, no initiation, and it's not for life. Any one who wants to earn money could step to the shop leader and ask to be put on. They either will or they won't. Most will give them a shot. As long as they don't steal or snitch or mess the money or product up they are fine. If they want to stop they can just stop. That is how it has always worked in the maryland/dc area. No one is good kill you if you don't want to sell drugs anymore. And if you want to start selling drugs your don't have to get jumped in. People often confused the difference because of much of the nonsense that is shown on tv. Also games fight rival gangs about anything. These 'crews" only fight over things that deal with drugs. Not someone crossed someone name or on a wall etc. Also the BPD is a really poor police department. They probably didn't have GPS trackers then. This is the bosses fault. They forced that buy bust. They told them that it wouldn't work and they didn't need it to make the case. They couldn't keep a visual because they would be too close and would likely get spotted which is why they were 8 blocks away and relied on kima to give them street names and clues to where they were. They didn't count on the street signs being switched. None of them wanted to do that buy/bust. You can see McNuttly looked nervous and disappointed when they were discussing the plan. It wasn't up to them.

This is for sure the bosses fault. The higher ups getting in the way is a troupe in police shows. However, this is just fantastic how they're handling this. Orlando was an utter bafoon

Youtalkingtome

It's so layered. Impossible to binge because it requires you to think and consider everything. So glad this was our follow up to MM because it's similar to it in that way

Youtalkingtome

Thank you for clearing that up. It has become a cliche in movies. This makes it a more interesting dynamic in terms of the show as well.

Orlando was definitely an idiot, but I can't help but feel the state police messed up by putting him out in the public area while they confirmed who Avon was. That little power play of theirs backfired in a major way.
