Love this movie, and there's some great RL twitter follow characters in it ;)

This is the scariest horror movie i have ever seen.

Since you mentioned it, I'm currently reading The Martian(almost finished) and imho I think I enjoyed the movie even more than the book, which is super rare for me. I'm a huge fan of A Song of Ice and Fire books and Game of Thrones is not even half as interesting as the books are. I find that to be my usual reaction to book adaptations but there's always exceptions. And while I agree about most of Stephen Kings movie catalog, Shawshank Redemption is on the Mt. Rushmore of movies for me. Also have always loved Stand by Me and The Green Mile for that matter although I've never read any of them yet.

In the movie the main name that's changed from the book is that Steve Eisen is Mark Baum in the film. And the tragedy in Eisen's real life was so horrific that I think Adam McKay changed it -- because the suicide of a brother was actually more believable and less unimaginably terrible than what actually happened (the loss of Esien's infant newborn baby when a careless nanny fell asleep on top of the child in bed.)

Great movie. I still prefer “Too Big to Fail” over this for a movie version of this crisis, but the filmmaking was fantastic. Christian Bale got nominated for an acting Oscar. I remember the day the market crashed because I was stuck going to dinner with this smarmy investment banker and all he did was sit staring at his BlackBerry and crying.

Agreed. Excellent choice, Danielle! Thank you for picking this one!!

Love this movie! Went to see it in theaters several times. Also I liked other nominees that year like Spotlight, Martian and Brooklyn, I think this one should have won. I guess Spotlight has the same level tragedy story, script and cast were very strong. In my opinion the Big Short was way more creative with their decisions and storytelling and their task to make people understand and care was infitely more difficult. But I get it, Spotlight's subject matter was horrifyingly closer to our human understanding and feelings (mostly shock and horror) and its story was very important to tell. Also, just like Big Short, it's probable that same mistakes will be repeated again

A similar film is Margin Call (2011) , a drama inside a Wall Street firm in the middle of the 2008 crises.

the line that really made the movie for me was when Bradd Pitt's character explained to them what their bet meant, and then angrily told them to "Just dont fucking dance" before he stormed away. Pitt and Bale were so good in their roles.

RE: movie adaptations of books I read The Martian when it first came out. I watched the movie adaptation on the day it premiered too. Absolutely loved both! I think the movie is actually a really interesting case study of how you need to adapt a story to a different medium to still make it work. The bones of the story are the same, but a lot of the details are changed to fit the visual storytelling. Great cast, great directing, absolutely phenomenal soundtrack.

RE: housing market collapse I was 18 when all this went down. It personally didn't really affect me all that much, other than the general economic recession. I just started university in The Netherlands, which is very cheap, so thankfully my living expenses were very low. But my parents lost over half their pension funds... And that was in The Netherlands, with pension funds focussing exclusively on "low risk" assets. Thankfully they still had 10 to 15 years to work on building it back up, and they ended up fine now.

I recommend that movie as well...I work in the financial services industry and insurers saw this stuff coming in 2003-2004 at industry conferences and most life insurers dumped their mortgages by 2007 except for AIG...it was mainly due to deregulation when Glass-Steagall was gotten rid of pushed by Newt Gingrich and the GOP House and willingly agreed to by Bill Clinton, basic ally allowing the Wall Street firms to take sides on these assets rather than just act as middle men for a fee....and many bet the wrong way...Matgin Call has Zachary Qunito, Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Jeremy Irons and Stanley Tucci in it so has some star power as well....

Ah thanks so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the performances. I was impressed at how well Adam McKay made such a dry subject interesting and informative. (Sorry I'm late. I'm playing catch up after a couple of busy weeks).

Michael Bennett

The fact that only one person went to jail over all of this, and it was just some guy who did some "routine" asset hiding is unconscionable. Without getting too political, perhaps if there had been some accountability, 2016 and 2024 would have gone differently. This movie's pacing is excellent, and it manages to keep you involved while cutting between 3 different storylines. I really liked the way that they explained conflicts of interest, especially with Mark Baum's team. Yes, I want Jared Vennett to be right, but let's find out if he is. Yes, it's in my interest for S&P to rate these bonds lower, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong. It's important to understand this because hazardous incentives at every level were the root cause of the entire crisis. I think my favorite line of the movie is the cut to "Yeah, there's a bubble" right after the stripper says she has 5 houses and a condo.

I loved that line too. I was surprised at how watchable this movie is considering the subject matter. Just a very entertaining movie while being absolutely terrifying.
