Wow it has been a while since I have seen a movie that is so jampacked that I could rewatch it multiple times to just pick up more stuff. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this all year my local theater only showed it for a week and then pulled it in favor of showing older movies because it was doing that bad in ticket sales. The book that is the main source for this is called Live from New York. It’s the history of SNL told by the people involved I would say at least 80% of this movie is out of the book though I think this is massively time compressed like you guessed and this stuff happened over the course of weeks not one night. The actor who played Chevy is most known for playing the Riddler on the Gotham TV series the actor also has a reputation of being difficult, so him playing Chevy is kind of ironic. I wish I had known you were doing this I might have added on another slot for the pilot of SNL to complete the story. I am more familiar with Matthew Rhys from Brothers and Sisters a great dramedy series he did. He and Sally Field who played his mom on that show bickering could be hysterical. It’s a shame this movie didn’t do better. The Live from New York book has a built in sequel with the last show with Lorne and the cast in the original 5 year run. Great movie I had been trying to talk myself into spending the $20 and you convinced me. My first SNL experience was the syndicated show they made out of edited sketches that could be safe for daytime standards. Nick at Nite played it in the late 80s and most was over my head but it gave me an appreciation for the original cast years before I actually saw the real show.

After watching this I wish Peacock would show the Aaron Sorkin SNL series. That show had its issues but the pilot to it was great tv. The cold open of that pilot I quote constantly.

Was thinking about Studio 60 alot during this def time for a rewatch :) Sorkin really captured the chaos before the show in nearly identical way they do here.

I need to read that book now, I adored this movie. I agree it is very rewatchable, I actually purchased this on Amazon so I will be watching it again very soon!

several of the actors really KILLED their impersonations. Billy Crystal was so spot on...
