I can’t wait for the next two episodes.

Jeff

I do love these last two seasons of the show, but in my opinion, season 6 doesn't truly begin until episode 4. You'll see why. I'm really looking forward to the next 43 weeks of your reactions; it gives me something to enjoy about 2025. Do you plan on taking any weeks off for the holidays, or will you keep the same schedule "ad aeturnum"?

Yannick Denis-Trudel

I sooo agree with you... Production value is through the roof in this season opener, extras and guest cast are non-stop. I think you can trust the showrunner (John Wells) not to drop a dirty sock on the shower rod (i.e. Closing the summit, good or bad, without showing us the "how the sausage is made"). But the whirlwind is just at picking up... strap in your seatbelts, the rollercoaster is just starting the climb, boys and girls! Enjoy the ride!

The summit at NSF Thurmont is inspired by the actual Camp David accords between Egypt and Israel, which was a HUGE deal at the time. (Remember that at the time most of the Arab world didn't even acknowledge Israel as a legitimate political entity). The peace talks with the PLO's Yasser Arafat failed, my guess is that the terms that the Israelis offered were similar to the ones mentioned in this episode. The failure of those (separate) talks lead one American diplomat to comment "the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity".

Heres a little easter egg for you. One of the helicopters for this episode got mismarked by the design team. On the tail was printed Untied States of America. I wanted to share a pic but not sure we can in this forum. You can find it here https://thewestwingweekly.com/013 scroll toward the bottom.

Same schedule but if recording falls on holidays we will record on a different day to be able to meet the deadline

I’m so excited for this because this is the season I’ve almost never rewatched - I just wasn’t as excited about it at the time as the first seasons, and now I mostly watch like the Christmas episodes at Christmas - so I don’t remember anything about this season at all. I’m sure I’ll remember it when I see it, but I’m excited for the ride!

There were the 1978 Camp David talks between Egypt and Israel (which deliberately excluded the Palestinians) and then the (initially secret) peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis called the Oslo Accords in 1995. There's a whole timeline of the peace efforts, I don't know if and when things will ever get back on track. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli%E2%80%93Palestinian_peace_process The Camp David talks resulted in the assassination of President Anwar Sadat by some of his own bodyguards, and the Oslo Accords resulted in the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin by an ultranationalist Israeli, lest we forget there are crazies on both sides.

The Camp David scenes were filmed in the Catoctin Mountains near the real Camp David. I think they used a camp or park or something.

Oh, based on the comments both of you had during this episode...hold on to your hats! I'm not sure either of you are ready for the stuff that is waiting in the wings. I know what's coming and even I'm not prepared for some of what's in store. Especially as we approach S7. There's some stuff that's amazing, great castings and moments that make me tear up just thinking about them.

In my rewatches I usually skip this episode and the next for reasons I can explain after the next episode. BUT, I’ve decided to go ahead and watch them this time. I had forgotten just how great the production value on this one is. Such a dramatic season opener. I’m geared up and ready for next week.

There's a ton of great stuff ahead, but the show always loses me a bit here. You've talked about how, even with it being incredibly idealistic about politics, the show has often been good at showing the limits of Bartlet's power, how some problems are just too big for the president and his staff to tackle alone. But the 'wins' start to add up, and they start getting bigger and bigger. After the "fixing Social Security" episodes and now we have Barlet attempting to solve the Israel-Palestinian conflict... like they are wanting to take big swings and show how amazing Bartlet is, as if we needed more evidence. Bartlet is just becoming presidential superman, and it just stretches it too far for me to really settle in and enjoy what is a wonderful episode. I can't push past it.

I'm so freaking excited, as you know we really enjoyed S5 so seeing everyone's excitement really has me pumped!

Youtalkingtome

I understand. I think we need a "President Superman" and some of that ideology, albeit unrealistic, really registers with me for some reason.

Weird Magic

Lets just go here - it's the West Wing - kind of tired of comparing the seasons yada yada. It's bleeping good, better than 99% of what was there in 2004 and about 90% of what is out here now. Originally airing on October 20, 2004, 'N.S.F. Thurmont' is Episode 1 of Season 6 of The West Wing. It is the 112th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.0, placing it as the #10 ranked episode of this season and #67 out of all the episodes shown so far.

On an unrelated note...did you know that season 5 episode 15 seems to be MIA? I can't seem to find it on Patreon...

Your last couple of thoughts were really interesting to me. I've always consdiered it kind of conspiracy theory, but these days, with so many wins for populism in many countries, I'm feeling it's becoming more and more real: I think we are not far from the point where actually solving issues is bad politics. Politicians can be much more interested in keeping issues afloat, and to keep fighting them, then to close them.

Been waiting to sign up again - was planning to the moment you reached S6, and will be here until the end now :) I think it may seem a little 'overhopeful' of a storyline - especially given current circumstances - but very soon Bartlet's role is going to be overshadowed by the election (I don't think it's a spoiler to say there's an election storyline coming!) It always felt like this was the show giving him a moment to be the historic, incredible president the viewers know him to be, doing something no other president could or would do. A last hurrah before there is a permanent reminder that his presidency is on limited time. I'm not saying he has nothing to do in the last few seasons, of course, but it's his last opportunity to 'let Bartlet be Bartlet' before talk of who succeeds him truly kicks in, and before talk of what he does always comes down to the election and the 'next guy'.

We've been making predictions throughout season 5. We can't wait to see how this plays out. Welcome back!
